Journal of Community Service and Society Empowerment (JCSSE) accepts articles on community service results in the fields of development, empowerment, community strengthening, and the results of activities or practical implementations of community service, empowerment, or strengthening that are problem-solving, comprehensive, meaningful, and sustainable, with clear goals. Various community services and empowerment activities must have novelty (have innovation and creativity) so that they do not just replicate the same activities in different places, have measurable results and impacts on society, and support the achievement of the goals set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a global action plan agreed upon by world leaders to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the environment. The SDGs contain 17 Goals and 169 Targets, so each article must be linked to these goals and targets (as stated in the contribution statement). Therefore, JCSSE accepts articles from Indonesian authors and other countries that have not been offered for publication elsewhere.

Abstract

Obesity during productive age significantly increases the risk of various metabolic complications, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Body composition assessment, particularly through Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), plays a crucial role in early detection and provides accurate measurement of fat and muscle distribution. BIA enables the identification of body fat percentage and muscle mass, which are key indicators in evaluating health risks and planning appropriate lifestyle interventions. This community health activity employed the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, focusing on health education and body composition screening using BIA for early obesity detection. A total of 40 participants of productive age groups were involved in this initiative. The average body fat percentage was 26.88%, and the average muscle mass was 25.44%, reflecting a notable risk of obesity in this population.  Health education combined with BIA-based screening has proven effective in raising awareness and promoting early identification of obesity-related risks. Through BIA, participants gained a better understanding of their body composition, which motivated positive lifestyle changes. Regular monitoring of body composition is recommended to help reduce obesity prevalence among productive age groups and to enhance community health and quality of life.

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a degenerative condition characterized by decreased muscle mass and strength, significantly affecting quality of life and functional ability, especially in the adult and elderly population. This community service activity was conducted at SMP Kalam Kudus, West Jakarta, involving 87 productive age participants. Screening was conducted using handgrip strength measurement, a non-invasive, practical, and effective method for early detection of sarcopenia risk. The results showed that 8.05% of participants had low handgrip strength, indicating an early risk of sarcopenia. Education on the importance of maintaining muscle strength through physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle was provided to participants. Handgrip strength screening has been shown to be an effective early detection tool and can be used as an indicator of chronic disease risk, including stroke. This activity contributes to increasing public awareness of the importance of muscle health and prevention of related complications. Routine implementation of screening and education is expected to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of disability in the adult population.

Abstract

Hydrated skin is an important indicator of overall skin health, as water content in the stratum corneum plays a vital role in maintaining the skin barrier function. Insufficient hydration can lead to dry skin, increase the risk of infections, and reduce quality of life. This activity aimed to assess skin water and oil levels among the elderly residents at Hana Nursing Home to prevent dry skin conditions. The PDCA (Plan–Do–Check–Act) approach was applied, which included planning the screening activities, measuring skin water and oil levels, evaluating the results, and providing skin care education for participants with abnormal findings. A total of 36 elderly individuals participated in this activity at Hana Nursing Home, South Tangerang. The results showed that 20 participants (55.56%) had low oil levels, while 24 participants (66.67%) had low water levels. These findings underscore the importance of maintaining skin hydration through adequate fluid intake, regular use of moisturizers, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Early detection of skin hydration status, combined with targeted education, is effective in preventing dry skin and improving quality of life in the elderly population.

Abstract

Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are key indicators in evaluating metabolic risk. A high distribution of abdominal fat is closely associated with insulin resistance and various metabolic disorders. Mealtime-based interventions, such as time-restricted eating (TRE), are considered promising preventive strategies. This community education and anthropometric assessment were conducted at St. Francis of Assisi Church, South Jakarta, using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) framework. Parameters evaluated included BMI and WHR, accompanied by visual educational materials on daily mealtime structuring. Among the 65 adult participants, the average BMI was 25.74 kg/m² and the average WHR was 0.9. A total of 56.92% were categorized as obese, and 83.08% exhibited a high WHR. These findings reflect a predominance of central adiposity, which is strongly associated with elevated metabolic risk. The high proportion of individuals with overweight and central fat accumulation highlights the urgency of preventive and promotive efforts. Educational interventions, particularly through poster-based delivery of information on time-restricted eating, present a feasible approach to raising public awareness on the importance of structured mealtimes as a preventive measure against metabolic disorders.

Abstract

This community service program is motivated by the necessity to enhance the productivity and efficiency of catfish farming in the Pringsewu Regency of Lampung, particularly in the face of challenges posed by water quality variability and climate change. Conventional fish farming systems frequently encounter obstacles such as temperature instability, pH fluctuations, and elevated ammonia levels, which can lead to stress and disease in fish. Consequently, this program aims to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) as an innovative solution for real-time monitoring of pond water quality. The methods employed include technical assistance and training for the community partner, the Bintang Rosela Jaya group, through the installation of an IoT system that monitors temperature, pH, ammonia, and total dissolved solid (TDS) parameters. Program evaluation is conducted using pre-tests and post-tests to assess the improvement in participants' knowledge and skills. Evaluation results indicate a significant increase in the average scores of participants' understanding from 60 (pre-test) to 73 (post-test). Furthermore, the application of IoT technology has proven to enhance farming efficiency by reducing disease risks and facilitating water quality management. In conclusion, this program has successfully bolstered the capacity of partners in the adoption of innovative technologies in aquaculture, thereby supporting the sustainability of catfish farming operations and enhancing competitiveness in the national fisheries market.
