Abstract

This study aims to analyze how xenoglossophilia manifests in podcast content, and its impact on the communication patterns of Generation Z. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study uses discourse analysis to examine popular podcasts that frequently incorporate foreign languages and are widely consumed by Generation Z. The survey results conclude that Generation Z's foreign language use is primarily driven by social trends and influences, with social media and films as the primary sources. Foreign languages are most frequently used in everyday conversation and social media, while usage in formal contexts remains low, suggesting that this practice is more of a lifestyle than a communicative need. Analysis of The Indah G Show podcast reinforces these findings through quotes highlighting the superiority of English over Indonesian in terms of efficiency and vocabulary. This phenomenon reflects a shift in the linguistic attitudes of the younger generation and poses challenges in maintaining the sustainability and prestige of the Indonesian language in the era of globalization. This study recommends the development of a digital media-based learning model for the use of foreign languages to preserve and strengthen national language identity.

Abstract

A This study aims to develop learning media based on the Padlet website to improve storytelling skills among elementary school students through the integration of East Javanese local wisdom. The developed media includes eight main menus, namely the main page, identity profile, learning outcomes, student attendance, material, student worksheet, evaluation, and bibliography, which provide an interactive and engaging learning experience. The research employed the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) and involved 80 third-grade students as participants. Data were obtained from media and material expert validation questionnaires, as well as student response questionnaires after the implementation stage. The validation results showed that the developed media achieved a validity score of 90% from material experts and 87% from media experts, indicating that the product met the feasibility standards. Moreover, the student response test revealed a very positive perception, particularly in terms of attractiveness, interactivity, and usefulness for learning storytelling skills. These findings demonstrate that the Padlet-based learning media incorporating East Javanese local wisdom is effective, practical, and of high quality in supporting the development of students’ storytelling skills. The significance of this study lies in offering a digital learning innovation that strengthens cultural values while enhancing literacy competence in elementary education.

Abstract

C hildren's literature has great potential in supporting children's mental health. However, in Indonesia, the issue of children's mental health is still often considered taboo. This article aims to re-read Clara Ng's collection of stories, Bagai Bumi Berhenti Berputar (As If the Earth Stopped Spinning), as a form of advocacy for children experiencing mental health issues through a therapeutic approach to literature. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with empathetic narrative reading techniques on five children's stories, namely Pohon Harapan, Seribu Sahabat Selamanya, Kerlip Bintang di Langit, Jangan Lupa Aku Mencintaimu, and Yang Paling Istimewa. The analysis was conducted in three stages: (1) identifying the emotional conflicts and inner dynamics of the child characters, (2) interpreting the symbolism and coping mechanisms that appear in the narrative, and (3) examining the forms of emotional advocacy built through the relationships between characters and the storytelling structure. The results of the study show that these stories: (a) validate children's emotions honestly without denial, (b) provide an emotional safe space through symbols, dialogue, and imagination that enable reflection and recovery, and (c) strengthen children's agency in dealing with traumatic experiences by attaching meaning to emotional experiences. In conclusion, this collection of stories not only represents children's psychological dynamics but also functions as a medium of literary advocacy that supports emotional recovery and encourages the surrounding environment to be more sensitive to children's mental health issues.

Abstract

Travel writing serves as a crucial medium through which narrators document and interpret their encounters with foreign cultures. This study examines Hanum Salsabiela’s Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika (BTLA) to explore how the narrator reports on the United States, expresses her self-identity during her journey in the United States, and represents the people of the United States through the lens of postcolonial travel writing. This research is significant because the narrator not only depicts the United States as a geographical and cultural space but also highlights the presence of Islam within it. As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is not surprising that many Indonesian travel writers are drawn to Islamic regions such as the Middle East. However, in recent years, some have begun to explore Western countries, which differ significantly in culture and religion. The data collection methods used in this research are textual observation and note-taking. In addition, the data analysis employs discourse analysis grounded in the postcolonial travel writing paradigms of Carl Thompson. In conclusion, the study indicates that the United States is portrayed as a metropolitan country, yet it continues to face overlapping social issues, including homelessness, Islamophobia, and discrimination. BTLA functions as self-reflective travel writing, using the United States as a space for the narrator to explore and reflect on her identity as a Muslim. Furthermore, in representing the Other, the narrator still exhibits traces of a neo-colonial attitude, even though she strives to present a cosmopolitan perspective.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of Legal English into Indonesian law schools, emphasizing the persistent gap between national language policy and pedagogical implementation. Although Indonesian regulations, such as Law No. 24 of 2009 and Law and Human Rights Ministerial Regulation No. 13 of 2018, recognize the use of English in legal communication, its curricular application remains fragmented and discretionary. Adopting an interdisciplinary mixed approach that combines doctrinal legal analysis, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) literature review, and questionnaire-based inquiry involving law students and lecturers, this study examines how policy mandates are interpreted in classroom practice. Findings reveal a clear policy–practice misalignment: Legal English is often treated as an elective subject, lecturers lack institutional support and ESP training, and students report limited opportunities for structured instruction despite acknowledging its importance for professional competence. The paper uniquely bridges regulatory and pedagogical perspectives by demonstrating how doctrinal frameworks can inform curriculum reform through Content-Based Instruction (CBI), Task-Based Learning (TBL), and mediation-oriented pedagogy. By aligning regulatory obligations with evidence-based ESP principles, the study proposes practical strategies for curriculum design, faculty development, and institutional policy to strengthen Legal English as a core component of legal education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model for teaching Indonesian language based on critical and collaborative thinking in the Law Study Program. This research is classified as R&D development research. The development research model used is the R2D2 development model, which has three important stages, namely: (1) define focus, (2) design and development, and (3) disseminate. The subjects of this study were students who were taking Indonesian language courses in the Law Study Program, Faculty of Law, Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta and Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative data analysis. The results of this study are as follows: (1) there is a need to develop a learning model that attracts students' interest in Indonesian language courses in the Law Study Program; (2) the model development has succeeded in developing a critical and collaborative thinking-based learning model for Indonesian language courses in the Law Study Program; (3) The pretest analysis results obtained a p-value of 0.855, which is known to be p-value > 0.05, so Ho is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that the level of student thinking after treatment between the control and experimental groups was significantly different.

Abstract

This study explores the conceptualization of linguistic context as cybertextual, a multimodal and digitally mediated construct within the framework of post-functional linguistics. It argues that digital communication extends linguistic boundaries, integrating visual, gestural, aural, spatial, and textual modes in meaning-making. Anchored in mindful deep learning, mindfulness is viewed not only as cognitive awareness but as a pedagogical stance that nurtures attentiveness, emotional regulation, and reflective engagement with multimodal semiotic resources. The study aims to (1) classify diverse forms of cybertextual context and (2) interpret their functional identities through mindful learning. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, it analyzes authentic data from Instagram to examine meaning construction through semiotic layering. Employing extralinguistic equivalence analysis, the research identifies five interrelated modalities—visual, gestural, aural, spatial, and linguistic—each contributing distinctively to interactional meaning. The integration of mindful deep learning within this model reveals how learners can cultivate semiotic sensitivity, interpretive accuracy, and empathetic communication in digital environments. The study advances post-functional linguistic theory and provides pedagogical insights for fostering critical and ethical language awareness in multimodal, digitally enriched learning settings.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and map the subdialects of Cirebon-Indramayu Javanese based on word/phrase forms and their meanings, and to analyze their dialectal relationships. This study is a sociolinguistic study, using a direct method (field survey), which involves collecting data by directly visiting respondents. Based on the research findings, there are 57 dialectal vocabulary items from Cirebon-Indramayu Javanese originating from four sub-districts in Cirebon Regency and six sub-districts in Indramayu Regency: Gegesik, Susukan, Kapetakan, and Tukdana (Cirebon Regency), and Kedokanbunder, Kertasemaya, Krangkeng, Sakagumiwang, Sindang, and Balongan (Indramayu Regency). Based on the results of the vocabulary and meaning study of the 57 vocabularies, 4 subdialects of Cirebon Javanese and 6 subdialects of Indramayu Javanese were identified and mapped, namely the Cirebon dialect: (1) Gegesik subdialect; (2) Susukan subdialect; (3) Kapetakan subdialect; and (4) Tukdana subdialect. The subdialects for Indramayu Javanese are: (1) Kedokanbunder subdialect; (2) Kertasemaya subdialect; (3) Kerangkeng subdialect; (4) Sakagumiwang subdialect; (5) Sindang subdialect; and (6) Balongan subdialect. The Javanese subdialects in several areas in Cirebon and Indramayu are proven to have quite significant differences and contain elements of absorption from Javanese and Sundanese dialects.

Abstract

This research aims to (1) Describe the implementation of digital media with culturally responsive perceptions to improve the reading skills of fourth-grade elementary school students and (2) describe the supporting and inhibiting factors in the application of digital media with culturally responsive perceptions in reading instruction in fourth-grade elementary school. This research uses a classroom action research design conducted in two cycles. The subjects of the study are 15 fourth-grade elementary school students. The research procedures include planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data collection techniques are observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. Data is analyzed descriptively quantitatively and qualitatively based on the improvement of scores and student engagement.  The research results show that the application of digital media based on Culturally Responsive Teaching improves students' reading skills from the pre-cycle to cycle I and cycle II. The improvement is evident in students' literal, interpretive, and evaluative understanding aspects. Media that connects the reading content with the students' culture has been shown to enhance interest and active participation in the learning process. The conclusion of this study states that the Culturally Responsive Teaching-based learning approach supported by digital media can create a more meaningful, contextual, and inclusive learning experience. This research contributes to the development of pedagogical practices in elementary schools by integrating digital technology and culturally responsive learning approaches. These results can serve as a reference for teachers, media developers, and education policy makers in designing literacy strategies that are relevant to the social and cultural contexts of students.
