Abstract

The sustained existence and growth of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia highlight their resilience and relevance, attributed to their unwavering mission, vision, and effective learning methodologies. Despite being considered traditional, methods like bandongan and sorogan have proven successful in producing capable students, reflecting their effectiveness. Previous studies have explored these methods but lack a focused evaluation of the factors influencing their implementation and outcomes. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the supporting and inhibiting factors that shape the learning process using these methods at Darul Huda Jugang Melis Islamic Boarding School, Trenggalek. This qualitative field study employs a descriptive approach, involving ustadz, caregivers, and students as subjects. Data collection methods include observations, interviews, and documentation, followed by thematic analysis. The findings reveal three supporting factors: positive perceptions of the methods, well-qualified teachers, and adequate facilities. Conversely, three inhibiting factors include the absence of age limits among students, inadequate preparation of learners, and insufficient support from guardians. This research underscores the importance of balancing traditional methods with contextual challenges to optimize learning outcomes. It contributes to the discourse on traditional educational practices, offering insights for improving the application of bandongan and sorogan methods in modern contexts.

Abstract

Sustainable education has become increasingly crucial in addressing global challenges, particularly those related to environmental degradation. Despite its prominence in academic discourse, its application within Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) remains underexplored, creating a gap that necessitates thorough examination. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of sustainable education within Islamic boarding schools, focusing on supporting and inhibiting factors. Using a qualitative approach, this research employs the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model to analyze data collected from interviews, observations, and document reviews. Findings reveal that sustainable education in the context of an Islamic boarding school manifests in three dimensions: intracurricular activities integrating environmental themes into religious education, extracurricular activities such as a Smart Cooking Class, and co-curricular initiatives like the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5). However, challenges persist, including uneven teacher competencies in embedding sustainability values and a narrow focus on specific activities and subjects. The study highlights the need for a broader integration of sustainability principles across disciplines and educational contexts. This research contributes to the field by providing a nuanced understanding of sustainable education implementation in Islamic boarding schools and offers recommendations for enhancing its scope and effectiveness in similar educational settings.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation and impact of the Peaceful School Program managed by the Wahid Foundation in several Senior High Schools (SMA) in Indonesia. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive case study approach, with a focus on an in-depth understanding of how this program is implemented in specific schools and how it impacts students, teachers and the school environment as a whole. The results of this research reveal how the Peaceful Schools Program has created a more inclusive educational environment and encouraged a better understanding of the values of tolerance, peace and inclusion among students. Yenny Wahid as Director of the Wahid Foundation, the Peaceful Schools Program is an initiative that was born in response to the results of a survey on socio-religious tolerance trends conducted by the Wahid Foundation in 2016. In 2018, the Wahid Foundation reported that the Peaceful Schools program had been implemented in several high schools/vocational schools in provinces such as DKI Jakarta, West Java, East Java and Central Java. In Central Java Province, there are already 5 schools implementing the Peace School program, namely SMAN 7 Semarang, SMAN 10 Semarang, SMAN 11 Semarang, SMAN 13 Semarang, and SMAN 1 Cepiring Kendal. To date, the Peace School has been implemented in 79 Senior High and Vocational Schools (SMA/SMK) in the region. Good cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, through AIPJ2, has contributed to the success of the Peaceful Schools initiative in promoting tolerance and peace in the educational context in Indonesia.

Abstract

Implementing the Tahsin Binnadhor method in Qur'anic learning has become a critical issue amidst the need to improve the quality of Qur'anic recitation according to tajwid and tartil principles, particularly in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Previous studies have discussed various approaches to Qur'anic learning but have yet to explore the application of the Tahsin Binnadhor method at Pesantren Hubbul Qur'an Yassalam, especially in systematically and comprehensively building reading competencies. This study aims to examine the application of the Tahsin Binnadhor method in improving Qur'anic reading skills at Pesantren Hubbul Qur'an Yassalam, Jombang, East Java. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis related to the Qur'anic learning process at the pesantren. The data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical techniques to identify patterns and the effectiveness of the applied method. The findings reveal that the Tahsin Binnadhor method significantly enhances the accuracy of students' recitation in line with tajwid rules and facilitates a more structured learning process. Additionally, integrating this method with traditional pesantren approaches creates a compelling and adaptive learning environment that meets students' needs. In conclusion, implementing the Tahsin Binnadhor method significantly contributes to Qur'anic learning in pesantren, making it a relevant model for similar contexts. This study recommends further development of the process to strengthen its implementation across various pesantren.

Abstract

As one of the branches of spirituality in Islam, Sufism emphasizes simplicity, wisdom, and harmony with nature. The Eco-Sufism movement is an approach that integrates Sufi spiritual values with environmental awareness. This study examines the significance of Sufism in environmental sustainability through a case study at the Kanzun Najah Islamic Boarding School, Batu Malang City. This Islamic boarding school has adopted Eco-Sufism-based practices, such as organic farming, utilization of renewable energy, and conservation of natural resources, all inspired by Sufism teachings. Through a qualitative approach, this study analyzes how Sufi teachings on the relationship between humans and nature are translated into concrete actions to support environmental sustainability. The results show that applying Sufi values in environmental management positively impacts the socio-ecological welfare of the Islamic boarding school community while inspiring similar movements in other areas. This study also proposes that Eco-Sufism can comprehensively solve global environmental challenges by strengthening the spiritual connection between humans and nature.

Abstract

This article discusses the impact of new media on the dissemination of religious ideology, particularly in Indonesia, where the process of spreading Islam has traditionally been carried out through face-to-face meetings between students and teachers. With the rise of the internet, however, the transfer of religious knowledge has shifted to digital spaces such as websites, social media, and other online platforms. This has led to a proliferation of religious content and a blurring of the religious expert authorities, some of which may hold extremist and intolerant views. The objective of the study is to examine the major role of the pesantren educational tradition as the basis for strengthening religious moderation in the post-truth era. In the post-truth era, there are shifting models of Islamic da’wah which was originally at the practical level to the media level, as well as the rise of neko77 phenomenon where the objective facts do not influence public opinion. The researcher used a qualitative approach to identify the role and implications of the sanad tradition on the high index of potential for radicalism by internet users. Qualitative work steps such as observation, documentation, and literature study techniques were used by the author in this research. The researchers identified that Islamic boarding schools in their history are closely related to the scientific sanad tradition which can be a counter to extremist religious content in social media. The scientific sanad tradition in Islamic boarding schools has argumentatively not easily believed in religious doctrines without going through direct contact with spiritual teachers. The principle of continuous scientific sanad tradition between teachers and students, as well as direct scientific transformation, is important amid the acceptance of religious narratives circulating on social media regardless of their source and legitimacy.

Abstract

The Eco-Pesantren program comes as a strategy to create a clean, healthy, and environmentally friendly pesantren ecosystem. This study aims to analyze innovations in the implementation of the Eco-Pesantren program and its contribution to the formation of environmentally friendly santri characters at Pesantren Darunnajah Bogor. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach through a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies. The main informants include pesantren managers, educators, and students who are actively involved in environmental conservation activities. The data analysis technique refers to the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and verification and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the Eco-Pesantren program effectively fosters the character of students who care about the environment through various activities such as waste management, recycling practices, organic farming, ecoliteracy training, and pesantren garden management. The values of Islamic teachings, especially the concept of khalifah fil ardh (caretaker of the earth), strengthen the internalization of ecological awareness among santri. The positive impact of this program is reflected not only in the daily behavior of santri, but also in their increased contribution to the surrounding social environment.

Abstract

Da'wah is the process of conveying Islamic teachings to the public through various methods adapted to the times. One contemporary medium used in da'wah is religious music. Music functions not only as entertainment but also as a means to deliver moral and Islamic messages. In Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), religious music has become an innovative form of da'wah that effectively attracts public attention, especially among the younger generation. This study aims to explore the role of religious music as a da'wah medium from the perspective of Hadith, using a case study of Alma Voice, a religious music group from Al-Mawaddah Islamic Boarding School for Girls in Ponorogo. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, combining literature review of Hadiths related to music and art with field observations of da'wah practices carried out by Alma Voice. The findings show that Alma Voice uses music to spread Islamic values through lyrics that promote love for the Prophet Muhammad, encourage piety, and strengthen Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah). From the Hadith perspective, music is permissible as a means of da'wah as long as it does not contain elements contrary to Islamic law. This study concludes that religious music can be an effective communication tool for da'wah within the pesantren context when aligned with Qur'anic and Hadith-based values.

Abstract

Many Islamic educational institutions have attempted to integrate pesantren-based learning with general education, including SMA Tahfidz Al-Amien at Pondok Pesantren Al-Amien Prenduan, which has adopted an integrated curriculum model since its inception. This study aims to explore the implementation of curriculum integration involving the pesantren curriculum, the tahfidz curriculum, and the national curriculum, as well as to identify the implications of this integration for students and the school system. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis, and were verified using triangulation techniques to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that the curriculum integration is implemented both within the formal learning process (KBM) and through extracurricular activities. Students learn general and religious subjects in class, while also engaging in Qur’anic memorization and boarding school activities outside KBM. Evaluation is conducted each semester through structured exams (MID1, MID2, MID3), including both written assessments and memorization tests (Hifdzul Qur’an). The integration of these three curricula has significant implications: it produces graduates who are spiritually grounded IMTAQ, academically competent, and equipped with scientific and technological literacy. This model offers a balanced educational framework that prepares students for both higher education and broader societal roles.
