Abstract

This study aims to uncover changes in the social function of the Bolon House, the factors causing the changes, and their impact on the meaning and cultural values of the Toba Batak people. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with document-based analysis (documentary research). This approach was chosen because the study focuses on literature reviews and secondary data relevant to the changes in the function of the Bolon House, without conducting direct observations in the field. Data sources in this study consist of primary and secondary data, namely books, scientific articles, undergraduate theses, dissertations, and academic journals on Toba Batak architecture, as well as cultural tourism, as well as documentary data, namely digital archives, reports from local governments/tourism offices, and policy documents related to cultural preservation and tourism development. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction stages, sorting information from literature and documents relevant to the topic of changes in the function of the Bolon House. Categorization groups the data into themes: the traditional social function of the Bolon House, factors of change, implications for tourism, and cultural preservation. Although the change in function has the potential to reduce its sacred and social value, the existence of the Bolon House in the tourism sector also opens up opportunities for preservation, promotion of cultural identity, and empowerment of the local economy. Thus, this transformation needs to be managed wisely so that the Bolon House continues to function as a traditional architectural heritage that has sustainable social, cultural, and economic significance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of internalization of ethical values in Toba Batak traditional ceremonies through an anthropolinguistic approach. Traditional ceremonies are symbolic spaces where language, ritual actions, and kinship relations interact and represent cultural values. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques involving analysis of ritual texts used in various ceremonies, such as mangulosi, mangarapot, and mangulosi boru. The results show that ethical values such as somba marhula-hula, manat mardongan tubu, and elek marboru are internalized through traditional speech, kinship arrangements, and material symbols used in ceremonial processions. The anthropolinguistic analysis indicates that ritual language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a mechanism for reinforcing social norms passed down through generations. Furthermore, the internalization of ethical values in the younger generation occurs through the repetition of traditional language formulas, the strengthening of the role of Dalihan Na Tolu in the social structure, and direct participation in family ritual processions. This research confirms that Toba Batak traditional ceremonies serve a crucial role as a medium for the reproduction of moral and ethical values, as well as an instrument for preserving cultural identity amidst the tide of modernization. These findings contribute to the development of anthropolinguistic studies and a deeper understanding of the relationship between language, culture, and ethics in Toba Batak society.

Abstract

The architecture of Toba Batak traditional houses is a cultural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago, rich in symbolism and cosmological values. This study aims to examine the representation of cosmological values in the structure, spatial layout, and ornamentation of Toba Batak traditional houses, and to understand how these values function in the socio-cultural life of the community. Using a descriptive qualitative method with an anthropolinguistic approach and symbolic analysis, data were collected through literature review. The results show that Toba Batak traditional house architecture functions not only as a residence but also as a manifestation of the cosmos, composed of three main layers: the upper world (banua ginjang), the middle world (banua tonga), and the lower world (banua toru). This spatial division is represented through the stilt structure of the house, the orientation of the building facing north or the rising sun, and the use of gorga ornaments, which symbolize life, strength, and protection. Furthermore, the house’s raised-from-the-ground construction system reflects the concept of separating sacred and profane space, while the curved roof symbolizes the human connection with ancestors and divine powers. This research confirms that Toba Batak architecture is a medium for transmitting cosmological values that continue to live on in the community’s cultural practices. These findings are expected to contribute to the preservation of traditional architecture and the development of vernacular architectural studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the lyrics of the song “Roman Picisan” by Dewa-19 through a semantic study focusing on the analysis of meaning in aesthetic and emotional contexts. This song was chosen because it is rich in poetic diction, metaphors, and imagery that depict the dynamics of love more deeply than its literal meaning. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with documentation techniques to collect data in the form of words, phrases, and clauses containing both denotative and connotative elements. The data were then analyzed by interpreting the basic meaning and additional meanings that emerge through the use of figurative language. The results show that connotative meanings dominate over denotative ones in the lyrics of “Roman Picisan.” The seemingly simple lyrics actually convey powerful emotional messages, such as depictions of sudden love, suppressed love, emotional closeness, and heartache, depicted through the metaphors of “arrow,” “fragrance,” and “slicing promises.” The use of imagery such as “night of a thousand stars” also reinforces the romantic atmosphere, influencing listeners’ perceptions. These findings confirm that song lyrics, as a form of musical literature, possess complex layers of meaning and can be scientifically analyzed to understand how language functions as a means of aesthetic expression. This research contributes to semantic learning by presenting concrete examples of the application of meaning theory to creative texts. Furthermore, the interpretation of connotative meaning demonstrates its dynamic nature and the ability to change according to each listener’s emotional experience.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical and grammatical meanings contained in the lyrics of the song "Terbuang dalam Waktu" by Barasuara based on semantic analysis. The song lyrics were chosen as the object of research because they contain rich linguistic creativity, both basic meanings and meanings formed through grammatical processes. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data in the form of words, phrases, and clauses in the song lyrics collected through reading and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the song lyrics contain various forms of lexical meanings that refer to the basic meanings of words as listed in dictionaries, such as exclamation, voice, pain, pain, hope, and wound. In addition, grammatical meanings emerged from affixation, reduplication, and phrase formation processes, such as in the words "mengenang," "menepis," "perubahan," "bersahut," "bergulat," and "terbuang." The research conclusion shows that the combination of lexical and grammatical meanings in the lyrics of "Terbuang dalam Waktu" produces a rich, expressive, and emotional meaning. The lyrics not only convey a literal message through the basic meaning of the words but also convey the dynamics of change and inner nuances through their grammatical structure. This research confirms that the analysis of meaning in song lyrics has important academic value and can be used as a reference in semantic studies and Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

This research is motivated by a phenomenon observed on Instagram, particularly on the pageant lovers community account @dpidamu. The shift from standard Indonesian to slang forms of language has led to various issues, such as obscured meanings, violations of linguistic rules, and the potential for misunderstandings in everyday communication. This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of slang language from a semantic perspective and to examine language habits within a community as an impact of social media use, particularly Instagram. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The primary focus is to observe and analyze the linguistic forms that appear in everyday communication activities on the Instagram account @dpidamu. The findings reveal ten slang expressions categorized into six groups: interjection forms, meaning extension, affective and relational forms, meaning reduction, and meaning association. The use of slang on the @dpidamu Instagram account indicates that slang is not merely a deviation from standard rules but also a manifestation of linguistic creativity and the social identity of young generations in online interactions. From a semantic perspective, this phenomenon demonstrates that meaning change cannot be separated from the social, cultural, and psychological contexts of its speakers. The use of slang serves as a medium for expressing emotions, building group solidarity, and symbolizing lifestyle in the digital world.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of hate speech in the comments column of the Instagram account @dpr_ri on the post of the apology and condolences statement of the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, and explain its legal implications based on Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions (UU ITE). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, and a pragmatic and forensic linguistic approach. The data collection technique uses digital documentation techniques. The data analysis technique uses content analysis techniques combined with pragmatic analysis to reveal the function of expressive speech acts and relate them to the articles of the ITE Law. The results of the study indicate that the hate speech found includes four categories, namely provocation, incitement, insults, and unpleasant actions. Linguistically, the speech contains expressive speech acts with connotations of hatred, while legally it has the potential to violate Article 27 Paragraph (3) concerning insults or defamation and Article 28 Paragraph (2) concerning the spread of hatred based on SARA. The social implications include the erosion of public communication ethics, the emergence of a culture of aggressive speech, and the risk of criminalization due to low digital legal literacy. These findings confirm that pragmatic analysis and forensic linguistics can be used as instruments for early identification of hate speech on social media, while simultaneously strengthening legal awareness and language ethics in Indonesia's digital space.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the inconsistency of the tahfidz supervising teacher in using the teaching method or method, namely still using the deposit system. In this system, students often continue to the next verse even though they have not completely memorized the previous verse. This causes some students to experience difficulties when depositing memorization, such as stumbling in reading, skipping some verses, and not being correct in using tajwid or makharijul huruf. The purpose of this study is to determine: (1) the application of the One Day One Verse (ODOA) method in increasing motivation to memorize the Qur'an, (2) increasing motivation of students in memorizing surahs (3) supporting and inhibiting factors in the application of the One Day One Verse method. This type of research is field research with a qualitative approach. The research subjects include tahfidz supervising teachers, management teachers, students, and parents of students. The data collection techniques used consist of observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis is carried out through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the research and discussion, it was found that the ODOA method was applied to students who had already memorized the Quran fluently. Once they had memorized the Quran fluently, the supervising teacher targeted one new verse by dictating each verse fragment to be memorized. Furthermore, the supervising teacher used keywords in each verse and provided tajweed rhythms to help the students memorize the verses and improve their tajweed accuracy.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the rhetorical structure of the Mayor of Kediri’s speeches based on Monroe’s Motivated Sequence and to identify strategies for character portrayal through the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos in Aristotelian rhetoric. The study was conducted in the Kediri City Government environment with a data collection period from July to October 2025. The research population included the Mayor of Kediri’s speeches from 2023 to 2025, while the sample was purposively selected from five official speeches that met the criteria of complete rhetorical structure and contained the context of public policy and ceremonial events. The research instruments included documentation sheets for selecting and reviewing the speeches, as well as semi-structured interview guidelines used to obtain contextual data from Prokompim staff. The data were analyzed using textual analysis methods through two stages, namely rhetorical structure analysis based on the five stages of Motivated Sequence (attention, need, satisfaction, visualization, action) and character imaging analysis based on Aristotelian rhetoric. The results of the study show that all speech manuscripts consistently apply Monroe’s rhetorical pattern, particularly through the use of an interesting opening, presentation of public issues, policy solutions, visualization of the city’s future, and calls to action. In addition, all speeches present aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos in a balanced manner in building the image of the Mayor as a religious, credible, communicative leader.
