Abstract

This study describes the objectives of (1) physiological needs, (2) security needs, (3) love and belonging needs, (4) esteem needs, and (5) self-actualization needs of the main characters in the novels Adikku Pahlawanku by Fayanna Ailisha Daviany and Doa Untuk Mama by Najla Nurdiany Putri. The phenomena found in this study indicate that the two main characters, namely Tari and Aisyah, experience a layered process of fulfilling needs, starting from fulfilling basic needs such as food and health to higher psychological needs such as emotional support, appreciation, and self-development. In addition, this study found psychological tension in the form of economic anxiety, physical anxiety, and emotional conflict that affect the process of fulfilling the needs of the main characters, but in the end these needs can be fulfilled through the support of family and social environment. Data collection through the process of reduction, grouping, and interpretation of relevant quotes from both novels based on the categories of physiological needs, security, love and belonging, appreciation, and self-actualization in accordance with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory. The research findings show that both novels display the dynamics of human needs as a whole. Tari and Aisyah are depicted as child characters capable of building emotional resilience through warm family relationships. This research’s contribution lies in explaining how children’s literature, particularly the novel KKPK, can serve as a medium for understanding the psychological development of child characters and its relevance to the formation of readers’ characters. Furthermore, this research enriches the study of literary psychology by demonstrating that Maslow’s theory can be effectively applied to children’s literary texts as objects of scientific study.

Abstract

Connotative meaning is a branch of linguistics, specifically semantics, that is, the additional meaning attached to a word, group of words, or sentence beyond its original meaning. Connotative meaning is usually influenced by feelings, emotions, or culture. When someone uses a word with a connotative meaning, it means they want to convey something deeper, such as a positive or negative feeling, or a sarcasm. This research focuses on the analysis of semantic studies, namely the connotative meaning in the lyrics of the song Roman Picisan by Dewa 19. The lyrics of this song express feelings of longing and hope to be with a loved one, as well as depicting the struggle and honesty in undergoing the love relationship. The method used is qualitative analysis with data analysis techniques using the referential matching method proposed by Mahsun. Data collection was carried out through observation with listening, note-taking, and documentation techniques by writing down every word and sentence in the song lyrics. The analysis was carried out by identifying words or sentences that contain connotative meaning, then analyzing the data results according to the method used. Connotative meaning in this study is understood as an emotional, associative, and symbolic meaning that goes beyond lexical meaning, reflecting subjective experiences, social values, and cultural nuances inherent in linguistic expressions. The results show that the lyrics in the song contain many connotative meanings that not only function as artistic expressions, but also as a reflection of cultural dynamics and complex collective identities. These findings provide an important contribution in understanding the relationship between lyric literature and cultural contexts in Indonesian popular music.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the symbolic meaning of ulos in the formation of Batak cultural identity through the perspective of the weaving tradition. Using a qualitative approach with text analysis, this study examines weavers' narratives, cultural documents, and representations of ulos motifs and structures as cultural texts containing a network of meanings. The analysis is conducted by interpreting the weavers' creative narratives and linking them to the social, aesthetic, and spiritual functions of ulos. The research findings indicate that ulos has layered meanings that reflect ancestral values, kinship relations, and customary legitimacy. It is produced through a creative process rich in personal experience and collective memory. The weaving tradition serves as an important space for the inheritance of cultural values, as weavers act as cultural agents, maintaining the continuity of ulos symbolism amidst social change. The study also found that the meaning of ulos is not only evident in its use in traditional ceremonies but is shaped throughout the process of motif creation through the weavers' reflection of cultural values. This demonstrates that Batak identity is dynamic and continuously negotiated through practices of cultural representation. The limitations of this study lie in the limited scope of informants and the lack of exploration of the meaning of ulos across all Batak sub-ethnicities. Further research is recommended to broaden the perspectives of users and examine the influence of globalization on motif transformation. This study provides theoretical and practical contributions to the preservation of Batak cultural heritage through a deeper understanding of the symbolism of ulos as a living cultural text.

Abstract

Developing the Batak weaving tradition as part of the creative economy is a strategic effort to strengthen cultural values while improving the welfare of local communities. This study aims to analyze the preservation, innovation, and utilization of local wisdom in the Batak weaving production process so that it can be developed as a competitive creative economy product. The research method used a qualitative approach using observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies of ulos artisans in several regions in North Sumatra who still preserve Batak weaving. The results show that the weaving tradition not only functions as a socio-ritual identity and symbol but also has high economic potential when packaged innovatively. Motif development, product diversification, and the use of natural dyes are key strategies to meet the needs of the modern market without abandoning traditional values. Furthermore, the role of indigenous communities and women weaver groups is crucial in maintaining the continuity of local knowledge. The main challenges faced are limited regeneration of young weavers, a lack of support for production technology, and limited market access. This study confirms that the integration of local wisdom, design innovation, and digital marketing strategies can strengthen the position of Batak weaving as a competitive creative economy product. Thus, developing the weaving tradition is not only a means of cultural preservation but also a path to sustainable economic empowerment for the Batak people.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of the main character’s self-actualization journey in the film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Kumenangis based on Abraham Maslow’s humanistic psychology theory. The research problem is focused on how the main character’s self-actualization journey in achieving self-actualization based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, as well as the psychological impacts caused by fulfilling these needs. The method used is qualitative with a literary psychology approach. The data source is the entire film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Kumenangis with research data in the form of dialogue, plot, setting, intonation, visuals of the main character, expressions, body movements, audio/music. The data collection techniques used are documentation and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique used is the Miles & Huberman model. The results of this study indicate that there are 12 processes of fulfilling the main character’s needs to achieve self-actualization, which are influenced by various factors, such as internal factors, external factors, or both combined. The psychological impacts also vary, some are negative and positive. Negative impacts include anxiety, confusion, psychological exhaustion, emotional loneliness, low self-esteem, and despair. Positive impacts include health and calm, feeling safe, feeling loved, feeling accepted in the social environment, self-confidence, daring to refuse, self-acceptance, appreciation, independence, and forgiveness. In conclusion, the process of self-actualization of the main character is not easy and is full of challenges. Failure to fulfill the needs often occurs at the second level, namely the need for safety and security, due to the influence of external factors, in the form of the father’s dominance. This results in negative impacts that often arise at this stage. Then, positive impacts appear more in the fifth stage, when the main character has achieved self-actualization.
