Abstract

This research examines the expression of space in the stilt houses of the Bugis community in Baranti District, focusing on the interior elements of the living room. The living room in the Bugis stilt house not only functions as a functional space but also serves as a medium to express the social status and cultural identity of the homeowners. This study uses a semiotic approach with Peirce's trichotomy theory to analyze the signs on the interior elements of the living room that reflect the social, cultural, and status symbols of the homeowners. The signs found are divided into two main categories, namely collective signs that reflect shared social values (such as religious symbols, pilgrimage status, and family identity) and individual signs that reflect the personal expression of the homeowner, influenced by aesthetic preferences and socio-economic background. The research results show that noble houses tend to retain traditional elements that have deep philosophical and cultural meanings, such as the use of Jepara carved chairs and family lineage documentation photos, which serve as symbols of high social status. On the other hand, the homes of ordinary people use interior elements to express social status achieved through personal accomplishments, such as collections of educational photos and collections of cups that indicate hajj status.

Abstract

The Great Mosque of Darussalam in Palu suffered severe damage due to the 2018 earthquake, necessitating a redesign that not only meets functional needs but also reflects Islamic symbolism. This study aims to redesign the mosque by adopting a transformation approach based on the form of the Kaaba, the central spiritual symbol in Islamic architecture. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method through literature review, contextual observation, and morphological analysis. The transformation is carried out using subtractive and additive techniques applied to the basic cubic form of the Kaaba, resulting in a mosque design that is monumental, contextual, and rich in symbolic meaning. The final design also incorporates principles of tropical architecture and local elements of Kaili culture, creating a mosque that is not only aesthetically and spiritually significant but also relevant to the post-disaster social and geographical context of Palu City

Abstract

This study aims to explore and formulate therapeutic design strategies based on biophilic architecture in the design of mental hospitals in Palu City. The research begins with the identification of biophilic architectural elements that possess therapeutic value within the context of mental healthcare facilities, followed by an analysis of the psychological and spatial needs of patients and users of mental hospitals in Palu, using a biophilic approach. The study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in both conceptual and contextual foundations. The main focus is to formulate a mental hospital design concept based on the principles of biophilic architecture as a therapeutic strategy aligned with the social, cultural, and ecological characteristics of Palu City. The process involves conceptual design methods, site context analysis, and user needs assessment, which lead to the synthesis and formulation of a comprehensive design concept. Findings from this study indicate that biophilic architecture holds significant potential as a therapeutic design strategy in the development of mental healthcare facilities, especially in post-disaster areas such as Palu City. This approach not only offers more humane spatial solutions that support psychological recovery, but also addresses ecological, social, and disaster resilience challenges faced by the Palu community

Abstract

The increase in the greenhouse effect is one of the most critical issues in the climate field, triggered by the construction of high-rise buildings and the widespread use of glass materials. The serious consequences of this phenomenon involve rising sea levels, melting polar ice caps, damage to ecosystems, and increased risk of infectious diseases. Therefore, research on the application of green architecture principles in offices is of great importance, especially through a case study on the Green Office Park 1 Building in BSD. The basis of this research involves understanding the adverse impacts of high-rise buildings and the use of glass materials on the environment and the greenhouse effect. The main objective of this research is to analyze how the Green Office Park 1 Building integrates the concept of green architecture, using a qualitative descriptive method. The results concluded that the building has not fully implemented the principles of green architecture, especially in paying attention to the condition of the building site.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization, climate change, and social complexity make cities increasingly vulnerable to disasters. This study analyzes the role of community participation in building urban resilience against disasters through a qualitative approach and case study strategy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document studies, then analyzed thematically. The findings show that community involvement occurs in three main stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation, with the highest effectiveness in the implementation stage. The key factors supporting effective participation include adaptive local leadership, strong social networks, and responsive policies. However, participation still faces obstacles such as resource limitations, lack of recognition of local knowledge, and communication gaps among stakeholders. This study emphasizes the importance of inclusive, contextual, and sustainable participatory strategies to collaboratively strengthen urban community resilience.

Abstract

The selection of border elements between pedestrian walkways and vehicular roads is a critical aspect of urban landscape design that supports safety, comfort, and visual aesthetics. One widely adopted approach is the use of vegetation as a natural separator. This study aims to visually analyze the effectiveness of plant selection in separating these two functional zones, focusing on safety, visual legibility, and aesthetic value. This research seeks to strengthen through landscape enhancement while providing a pleasant pedestrian experience. The study employed one original site photograph and four digitally altered (montaged) images, which were evaluated by 30 respondents using structured questionnaires. Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) and Semantic Differential (SD) methods were applied to assess visual aesthetic quality. The results indicate that plant type significantly influences perceived aesthetic quality and is closely associated with user perception. The study concludes that medium-height shrubs are the most suitable choice for pedestrian borders, as they enhance visual aesthetics while maintaining a functional and environmentally responsive road landscape.

Abstract

The development of urban coastal areas presents many challenges, including limited access to basic infrastructure services and vulnerability to natural disasters. This study aims to evaluate the quality of coastal settlement infrastructure in Buol, with a focus on Buol Village in the Biau subdistrict. Buol Village is also the capital of Buol Regency. The results provide recommendations for policy directions on settlement development that are adaptive to the coastal environment. The research method uses a descriptive, quantitative, evaluative case study approach. The study results indicate that the majority of infrastructure facilities are rated "good" with an average score of 3.68. As a result, several other infrastructure components also meet the standards. Basic infrastructure components that meet standards include drainage, waste and sanitation management, and waste management. This research recommends several policy directions, including strengthening residential environmental facilities that are already functioning well, such as education, health, road networks, and electricity, which do not yet meet standards. It is hoped that these will focus on improving services, managing structures, and organizing the environment, like upgrading drainage systems, managing wastewater and sanitation, providing clean water, handling waste, and planning areas better to work with disaster prevention and coastal management. These findings and recommendations aim to support the formulation of more adaptive coastal community development policies by involving community participation and relevant stakeholders to ensure environmental protection in the urban coastal areas of Buol City, while also taking into account the historical background of the area, which in turn will positively impact the region’s image and improve the quality of life of its residents
