Abstract

The cultivation of religious moderation needs to be done considering the increasingly extreme differences, so it is necessary to form an attitude that can deal with such things. Religious moderation needs to be implemented for Madrasah Ibtidaiyah students because they are very vulnerable to deviant behavior. Educators have made efforts to instill moderation values through several strategies that have been designed. This strategy is a surefire way to provide a stimulus for religious moderation, starting from traditional, free, reflective, and transinternalization strategies. This study aims to describe the inculcation strategy regarding religious moderation and discover the implications of instilling religious moderation through traditional hopscotch games for Madrasah Ibtidaiyah children. The method used in this research is field qualitative, which involves analyzing data obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation during the study at an elementary-level educational institution, namely MI Sullam Taufiq. The results of this study indicate that the development of religious moderation owned by students through learning with the application of traditional crank games is more concrete to facilitate understanding and application of religious moderation in students.

Abstract

Shaping nationalist attitudes and moderate religious understanding in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) is based on studying from the Kitab Kuning (classical Islamic textbooks written in Arabic). This paper explores nationalism values in the salafiyah pesantren traditions and brings them into the concept of religious moderation. This study employed a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Pesantren head and families, old alumni, and asatiz (pesantren teachers) of the salafiyah pesantren volunteered to participate. Secondary data were garnered through documents in the form of the kiai’s handwriting and old photographs in terms of the pesantren tradition practices. The study findings indicate two distinctive pesantren traditions, i.e., the qasidah (a traditional Islamic music performance) tradition and the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony. The two traditions contain nationalist values and meanings taught to santri (pesantren students) and have been going on for over half a century. This proves that nationalism education in salafiyah pesantren has a distinctive model. Therefore, nationalism education practices in pesantren have two essential contributions to national unity and integrity: strengthening santri nationalism and moderate religious understanding and practice.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine moderate Islamic education's role in developing Islamic studies in Indonesia. Pesantren education has proven its worth by graduating many students working in various professions, including as lecturers in Islamic studies at Islamic higher education. This study employed a qualitative approach where the researcher served as the primary data collector. The researcher collected data using interviews, observations, and conclusions using six stages of data management. The research findings have exposed the following: First, Islamic education deepens Islamic insight by studying the yellow book and internalizing moderate Islamic values in student interactions. The depth of methodology, practicing openness, and developing a growth mindset are three strengths of moderate Islam in pesantren. Second, alums who work as lecturers consistently become mouthpieces of religious moderation through lectures, community service, thought synthesis dissemination, scientific development, and institutional development. Thus, with its advantages, moderate Islamic education in pesantren can produce national figures who influence the dynamics and progress of Islamic studies in universities.

Abstract

The rapid intellectual development of Islam in Indonesia has necessitated the modernization of  Islamic education, particularly in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN/ Public Islamic High School)  Insan Cendekia Pekalongan, which integrates spiritual rational humanism with religious  moderation. This study examines the connection between religious values and rational  modernization through the transformation of five core programs: digital madrasah, foreign  language development, adiwiyata madrasah, research madrasah, and homestay programs.  Employing a qualitative field research method, data was collected through in-depth interactive  communication with key stakeholders, including the head of the madrasah, deputy heads, and  research supervisors. The findings reveal that the rational-spiritual connection is manifested  through program modernization, which integrates multicultural values, tolerance, and local  wisdom into the madrasah’s academic environment. The modernization framework is inspired  by Habibie's intellectual and technological advancements, aiming to cultivate holistic human  development through the synergy of faith, science, and technology. This study highlights the  strategic role of religious moderation in balancing Islamic spirituality and rational thought,  enabling students to navigate contemporary educational challenges while maintaining their  cultural and religious identity. The implications of this research underscore the necessity of  curriculum transformation in Islamic education to enhance scientific literacy, critical thinking,  and social intelligence, thereby fostering a generation of Muslim scholars and professionals  who embody intellectual and ethical excellence. Future studies should explore the longitudinal  impact of these modernization programs on students' academic and socio-religious trajectories.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of humanistic education in shaping a moderate attitude  among elementary school students within the broader context of promoting religious  moderation and critical citizenship. The research aims to explore how humanistic education  contributes to fostering critical thinking, collaboration, innovation, and democratic values at the elementary level. Employing a qualitative method, data were collected through in-depth  interviews, observations, documentation studies, and surveys involving 54 students, four  teachers, and three parents from two elementary schools in the Batang Regency. Thematic  analysis was utilized to identify patterns across the collected data. The findings demonstrate  that humanistic education strengthens students' intellectual capacities through 4C-based  learning (Creativity and Innovation, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and  Problem-Solving) and enhances humanitarian and democratic narratives embedded within  character education programs. Survey results revealed high percentages of nationalist attitudes  (93.3%), tolerance (90.6%), non-violent tendencies (93.3%), and cultural adaptability  (89.75%) among students. The study concludes that integrating humanistic education with  religious moderation efforts significantly shapes moderate attitudes in young learners. These  findings imply that educational institutions should systematically adopt humanistic approaches  to cultivate moderate, tolerant, and critically engaged citizens from an early stage.

Abstract

The global proliferation of Salafi-Jihadist movements has raised serious concerns about  ideological infiltration into educational institutions, particularly in predominantly Muslim  countries like Indonesia. This study aims to explore how Salafi-Jihadist ideology manifests  within Islamic educational institutions and how such influence interacts with state-promoted  religious moderation programs. Positioned within a critical historical framework, this research  employs a qualitative design that integrates content analysis of scholarly literature and actor based inquiry to map the ideological characteristics of Salafi-Jihadism and the institutional  responses to its spread. The findings highlight three key insights: first, Salafi-Jihadist  movements present a doctrinally rigid and exclusionary interpretation of Islam that challenges  inclusive religious practices; second, the ideological appeal of Salafi-Jihadism lies in its claim  to scriptural authenticity and puritanical simplicity, making it attractive to specific youth  cohorts; and third, religious moderation initiatives—particularly through curriculum reform,  institutional policy, and cultural engagement—serve as effective counter-strategies to mitigate  radical influences. These findings offer important implications for policymakers, educators,  and religious leaders, emphasizing the urgency of developing preventive frameworks that  integrate theological inclusivity and critical pedagogy. Ultimately, the study contributes to a  deeper understanding of the ideological contestations within Islamic education and proposes  grounded strategies to safeguard religious institutions from extremism

Abstract

Aceh, as the region with the most absolute Muslim majority and the formal implementation of Islamic law in Indonesia, provides a unique context for studies on religious moderation. This study aims to explore the resistance strategies of Christian women in Aceh's educational institutions as  an alternative lens to understand the dynamics of religious moderation. Framing the discussion within James C. Scott’s theory of public and hidden transcripts and supported by functionalist perspectives, this research highlights the functional resistance of Christian women in asserting their religious identity and their right to religious education. Utilizing a qualitative method with data gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation in Langsa and Banda Aceh, this study finds two forms of resistance: hidden resistance manifested in the veiling practices during the Sharia enforcement period and public resistance through open identity assertion and demands for religious education rights. These findings demonstrate that women, as social agents, play a crucial role in advancing religious moderation. The study recommends that governmental bodies, particularly the Ministry of Religious Affairs, formally recognize and empower women as key actors in promoting religious moderation across Indonesia.

Abstract

Mainstreaming religious moderation has become crucial for Indonesian Muslims, particularly in the digital era. Experts agree that digital media is the most efficient and effective way of achieving this issue. To better understand the representation of Islam in Indonesia's digital sphere, this article aims to analyze content production by NU and Muhammadiyah, two of Indonesia's most prominent Islamic organizations. Using a Netnography approach and website analysis by Similarweb.com, this article analyzed the website's traffic, audience demographics (covering age and gender), and global standing. This information is used to investigate which social media network is most suited to disseminate ideas for religious moderation. According to the up-to-date statistics, nu.or.id is currently globally ranked 18,914, which places it well above muhammadiyah.or.id, which is positioned at the far more distant position of 140,435. Comparing December 2022 traffic and engagement statistics, nu.or.id had 4.169 million more visitors than muhammadiyah.or.id with 503,163 thousand visitors. The top country such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the United States, Singapore, and Germany perform admirably. The two sides are statistically about even when looking at viewer demographics. Based on these metrics, content created by nu.or.id that promotes religious moderation has a more powerful of being shared extensively. We believe there is potential for a stronger impact on mainstreaming religious moderation in Indonesia and globally if these two organizational platforms are integrated.
