Abstract

Bridging Worlds with Words: Translanguaging Space as A Transformation of Specific–Cultural Construct. Objectives: Translanguaging practices in multilingual contexts have emerged as a dynamic framework for understanding how learners utilize their linguistic repertoires to construct meaning and negotiate cultural identities. This study investigates the role of translanguaging spaces in shaping identity construction within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom in Indonesia. The research explores how learners creatively and critically engage with their linguistic resources, leveraging translanguaging practices to express themselves, reform specific-cultural constructs, and navigate multilingual environments. Methods: The study employs a qualitative approach, focusing on narratives of identity construction through classroom performances. Methods include observations, interviews, and analysis of multimodal compositions created by multilingual EFL learners. Findings: It reveals that translanguaging fosters deeper engagement in meaning-making processes by enabling learners to draw on their sociocultural resources and linguistic repertoires. It highlights how translanguaging spaces facilitate the projection and negotiation of cultural identities, allowing learners to occupy social spaces that reflect their unique experiences. Conclusion: Conclusions emphasize the transformative potential of translanguaging practices in EFL education, demonstrating how they empower learners to reconstruct cultural identities while enhancing cognitive and linguistic flexibility. The research highlights the importance for pedagogical approaches that embrace translanguaging as a tool for fostering inclusivity, creativity, and critical thinking in multilingual classrooms. Keywords: cultural identity construct, EFL learners, translanguaging space, multilingual.

Abstract

Teachers’ Questioning Strategies to Promote Students’ Engagement in EFL Classroom: The case of Islamic Boarding Schools in Aceh, Indonesia. Objective: The present study aims to investigate the use of questioning strategies during classroom interaction. There have been numerous studies on questioning strategies, however, Islamic boarding schools have received less attention. Method; There were N=106 students, Aged 14-16 years as students at Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, and English teachers (N=5) participated in this study selected through purposive sampling, documentation, observation, and interview are triangulation of instruments. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative form by Marzano's Observational Protocol Sheet (2013). Findings: The findings revealed that teacher mostly employs questioning strategies to check the students' knowledge and comprehension in the learning process by using many kinds of questions. Teachers used the questioning strategy through interview results to engage students and monitor the extent to which they met the learning indicators. Furthermore, when it happened to come to promoting children's critical thinking, teachers were ineffective because the questions were yes/no questions. In conclusion; it explicitly means that this strategy is interactive and effective and also can be a beneficial way to the students and teacher in the classroom interaction at school. Keywords: questioning strategies, Islamic boarding school, classroom interaction.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i1.202207

Abstract

Epistemological Beliefs and Academic Performance in Physics of Grade 12 Filipino Stem Learners. Objectives: This descriptive-correlational study investigated the existing relationship of epistemological beliefs to the academic performance in Physics of Filipino STEM learners. It further described the levels of academic performance and sophistication of epistemological beliefs about Physics of the Filipino STEM learners. Methods: This study involved a convenient sample of 407 Grade 12 Filipino STEM learners enrolled in A. Y. 2021-2022. This study used EBAPS to solicit the epistemological views of the students in Physic. Findings: Frequency, mean and standard deviation shown that majority of the students have a very satisfactory academic performance but their epistemological beliefs about Physics are generally poorly sophisticated. Pearson product-moment coefficient revealed that the four non-orthogonal dimensions of epistemological beliefs about Physics (structure of scientific knowledge, nature of knowing and learning, evolving knowledge, source of ability to learn) established significant association to students’ academic performance except real-life applicability. Multiple regression analysis revealed that among five dimensions of epistemological beliefs structure of scientific knowledge and nature of knowing are found to be significant determinants of the students’ academic performance in Physics. Conclusions: It is recommended for the physics teachers to craft an instructional intervention to enhance the students’ epistemological beliefs in physics, which in turns affect the performance of the students in the class. Keywords: academic performance, epistemological beliefs, multiple regression.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202302
