Abstract

This study aims to analyse the expressions used on prohibition signs containing preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 in Japan and Indonesia. Data were collected from modern shopping centres in Tokyo, Osaka, Jakarta, and Surabaya during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021-2022. The expressions on COVID-19 prohibition signs are categorised based on the presence or absence of polite forms and the use of implicit or explicit sentence structures. Therefore, this research analyses the types of expressions used and aims to determine whether there are similarities and differences between Japan and Indonesia. The result of this study found that there has a tendency to use implicit sentences rather than explicit ones on COVID-19 prohibition signs in Indonesia and Japan. However, there is a difference in the use of polite forms. Japan tends to use polite forms, while Indonesia tends to use non-polite forms.

Abstract

The study reports on the analysis of Adjunct to Refusal Expressions used by Japanese Native Speaker (JNS) and Indonesian Japanese Learners (IJL) in a refusal discourse. The aims are to see whether both use Adjunct to Refusal Expressions in a refusal interaction and to observe what type of expressions they use when refusing in the interaction, investigating the similarities and differences in their use from the first refusal stage to the stage where the intent of refusal is accepted by the refusee. The mixed method research involved 60 participants consisting of 30 pairs JNS female university students and 30 pairs of IJL female university students. The male students were not involved in this study due to the lack numbers of those learning Japanese language in the university. IJL students represented beginner and intermediate levels (N5, N4, and N3). The data were collected by situating the participants in a role play based on the setting given while being videotaped. The setting is a refusal to a close friend’s request. The data were analyzed by using a semantic formula framework, focusing on Adjunct to Refusal expressions modified from Beebe et al (1990), Yoshida (2015) and Hayati (2020, 2023). The results showed that both JNS and IJL employed Adjunct to Refusal expressions in their refusal discourse. There was no significant difference in the use of Adjunct to Refusal by JNS and IJL with χ2(1) = 1.270, p = .2597. However, JNS used higher Adjunct to Refusal expressions (46,7%) than IJL (33,3%). Further, their preferences in using certain type of Adjunct to Refusal expressions were similar in that they highly used information request type, whereas the  differences could be seen from the absent use of confusion as Adjunct to refusal in JNS and that of backchannel response in IJL.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate on the guided use of YouTube inside the classroom in the context of elementary education in Malang, Indonesia. As a versatile medium for providing authentic materials to learn a foreign language, YouTube has been widely utilized as an affordable alternative to facilitate authentic teaching and learning activities. Teachers can find abundant materials to use inside the classroom on YouTube, and learners can easily access the same material when they are home under their parents’ surveillance. In this study, YouTube provides authentic audio-visual entertainment where young learners are exposed to Japanese songs to memorize the vocabulary. This study used a descriptive qualitative method where the collected data are primary—from young learners by observing them learning Japanese in an extracurricular program—and secondary—taken from several literature reviews related to the current study. Learning Japanese using YouTube videos shows positive results with the support of students who can understand the material. Apart from that, students also said that learning using video methods was more fun and not dull. In this way, YouTube videos can facilitate the learning process of students learning basic Japanese at the elementary school or early childhood level.

Abstract

In communicating ideas in a complex discourse, non-literal expressions are often used to convey a message. This qualitative descriptive study used conceptual metaphor theory and metaphorical pattern analysis to analyze and investigate linguistic discourses and find the conceptual metaphor in the two most prominent Japanese media, Yomiuri Shinbun and Asahi Shinbun. Then, analyze how metaphorical expression emerges and what conceptual domain of the source domain is underlying the expression of the source target. This research shows that WAR is the most frequent conceptual metaphor in COVID-19 discourse and the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain. While the WAR conceptual domain helps to convey the urgency of how to treat the virus and illness, the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain helps to convey the situation and condition of the pandemic. This study found that both newspapers' data emphasize the community, citizens, and national interests, indicating that to understand how Japanese people communicate is to understand that Japanese people are a collective society, and that society and cultural background are embodied in the conceptual domain of human thinking and then appear as a linguistic expression.

Abstract

This study analyzes how Japanese people love nature, as presented in the movie Sweet Bean. Nihonjin no shizenkan is considered one of the Japanese ideal philosophies for valuing nature. The artwork sometimes portrays the abstract concept and how people adore their environment. This study examines the depiction of nihonjin no shizenkan philosophy in contemporary Japanese society, exemplified by the 2015 movie Sweet Bean. The data were gathered using a qualitative approach and the content analysis technique. The theory employed is the shizenkan no kyouiku concept, demonstrated by Sugai Hiroyuki, which refers to the people's way of life to seeing and value nature by heart, represented by back to nature, being one with and an act to respect nature. The film demonstrates that individuals in Japan, limited to their age, continue to practice nihonjin no shizenkan, which is presented by viewing nature as friends or a living thing. Based on the data, we split into two categories: (1) a person can communicate or interact with nature, and (2) see nature material as a living thing. The movie concludes that the interaction between people and nature significantly impacts someone's life and gives influence on businesses. This study can show how the Japanese value nature and any further cultural understanding.

Abstract

In the current era, technology is utilized for various activities, including learning. Learning applications are one such example, and they can be used as a medium for self-learning and corrective feedback. This study utilized an application called Hitokoma Kanji for kanji writing practice. The research sample consisted of 14 participants from second-year students of the Department of Japanese Language Education at FPBS UPI. This study aims to find out the process of kanji writing practice and corrective feedback using the Hitokoma Kanji application for four meetings. The method used in this research is qualitative. This research is explorative or preliminary, so the data taken is based on observation activities through screen recordings to understand how the Hitokoma Kanji application can affect kanji learning rather than conducting tests. The result of this study is the use of the Hitokoma Kanji application as a kanji writing practice media, and the Extrusion/Lenght Check feature helps participants to remember the order of scribbles and the shape of scribbles on kanji by the writing rules.

Abstract

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture has implemented an independent learning curriculum in all education-level units since January 2020. Many changes occurred with the implementation of the new curriculum. In independent learning curricula, fostering higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) is crucial, especially when developing complex sentence writing proficiency for beginners. This study aimed to improve beginner Japanese learners' ability to construct complex sentences in written activity by utilizing FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules. These modules incorporated audio, video, and digital applications, making the learning process engaging and self-paced. The study involved 60 students in their third year who had been studying Japanese for one year in a high school in Malang. This study is classroom research using qualitative descriptive methods. Research data was collected through observation, tests, and questionnaires. Observations indicated enthusiastic participation, and questionnaires revealed that participants comprehended how to construct simple, complex sentences and could apply them effectively in written contexts. Over 80% of participants expressed a positive attitude towards learning through FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules and recognized the importance of digital media in Japanese language learning. Furthermore, the test results demonstrated the participants' satisfactory ability to write complex sentences, meeting criteria in three key aspects: sentence structure in subordinate clauses, cohesion between main and subordinate clauses using the conjunctive phrase -no toki 'when', and coherence in the meaning of complex sentences. Based on test results, response questionnaires, and observations, these findings confirmed that using FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules effectively enhances learners' proficiency in writing complex sentences.

Abstract

This study explores the learning loss experienced at the Moji Intermediate level within the Japanese Language Education Study Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over a period of two years, traditional face-to-face learning was replaced by online instruction, which affected the implementation of certain learning stages, such as kanji writing exercises conducted in the classroom. This research aims to identify the extent of learning loss during online learning, specifically with kanji writing skills at the Moji Intermediate level. A descriptive qualitative method was used, comparing course grades from both online and offline learning periods. According to Rajesh, Hasibuan, Susanto, Solihat et al. (2022), while learning loss has been widely studied with various approaches, few have addressed its impact on specific courses, particularly in Japanese language education. The findings reveal that online learning significantly reduced students' kanji writing abilities. As a result, teachers must adopt new strategies to compensate for this gap and ensure that students perform well on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which is essential for graduation from the Japanese Language Education Study Program.
