Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated stigma toward health workers, patients, and survivors while intensifying social inequalities through rising unemployment, poverty, and social exclusion. This systematic review examined literature from ProQuest, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and PubMed, focusing on the stigma of COVID-19 in Asia. Original research employing quantitative or qualitative methods was included for articles that published in 2020-2021, while review articles were excluded. Screening followed PRISMA guidelines, with data collection and analysis conducted from November 2021 to April 2022, resulting in 24 articles. Data extracted included titles, authors, publication years, participants, methods, findings, strengths, and limitations. Quality was assessed using JBI’s critical appraisal tools, and thematic analysis was performed using Braun and Clarke’s framework. The review identified three key themes: general characteristics of COVID-19 stigma, affected populations, and the multifaceted impacts. Stigma in Asia has led to widespread fear and discrimination against infected individuals, survivors, health workers, and vulnerable groups with significant psychological, spiritual, economic, and health repercussions. We recommend that the government raise public awareness to minimize misinformation by providing education about COVID-19 and efforts to address the impacts caused by stigma, as well as integrating anti-stigma measures into policies and expanding mental health services for those affected.

Abstract

Toddlerhood is an important period in human growth and development; during that period, if the nutrition is not adequate, they risk stunting. Some factors that cause this are energy intake, protein intake, parenting, and food security. In 2022, the prevalence of stunting is around 148 million (22.3%), most coming from Asia and Africa; according to WHO, in Indonesia, the prevalence of stunting is 21.6%. The incidence of stunting in Mentawai Islands Regency is 32%, the second highest rate below the national rate. According to the author's knowledge, this research is the first study to analyze the relationship between independent and dependent variables as well as the determinants of stunting in toddlers in the Sarereiket Health Centre using questionnaire data, direct observation, and interviews that have gone through a validation and reliability process from experts through the laboratory. The research aims to analyze the relationship between energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene of toddlers and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24-59 months in South Siberut District, Mentawai Islands Regency. The method used the observational method. The subjects of analysis were 393 toddlers aged 24-59 months in the Sarereiket Health Centre who were involved in this study. Multivariate regression was performed to identify the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The results indicate that toddlers' energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene are associated with stunting. The results of the multivariate analysis in this study indicate that protein intake and toddler hygiene influence stunting and contribute to increasing the incidence of stunting in toddlers. The conclusion is there is a significant relationship between energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene of toddlers and the incidence of stunting in the Sarereiket Community Health Centre, Mentawai Islands.

Abstract

The lipid profile is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular disease risk, with elevated levels often influenced by dietary patterns. Nutrient intake and physical activity can help regulate cholesterol by reducing total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels. This study aims to compare the lipid profiles among vegan vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, and non-vegetarians. This research uses a cross-sectional study design. The study population includes 60 participants from IVS and the Yogyakarta community, selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research examines diet type as the independent variable, lipid profile as the dependent variable, and physical activity as a confounding variable. Data collection involves respondent identity and a physical activity questionnaire using IPAQ. Statistical analyses include one-way ANOVA, Post Hoc tests and multivariate analysis with one-way MANCOVA. The research results show that the total cholesterol level for vegan (173.10±21.04), lacto-ovo (169.45±44.84), and non-vegetarians (194.55±31.40). HDL levels for vegan are (55.25±10.79), lacto-ovo (49.00±9.12), and non-vegetarians (45.49±9.11). LDL levels for vegan are (111.90±19.80), lacto-ovo (114.85±44.39), and non-vegetarians (134.90±30.37), showing no significant difference p>0.05. Triglyceride levels for vegan are (103.15±57.06), lacto-ovo (100.65±60.07), and non-vegetarians (154.15±88.63) with significant differences p-value <0.05. When controlling for physical activity, differences in total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides persist between diet groups. Notably, HDL levels differ significantly between vegans and lacto-ovo (p<0.05). The conclusion is that both vegan and lacto-ovo diets have lipid profiles within the normal range compared to non-vegetarian diets. A vegetarian diet and regular physical activity contribute to a healthier lipid profile.

Abstract

Hypertension or high blood pressure is the result of systolic and diastolic blood pressure that is too high ≥140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is one of the causes of premature death worldwide Reducing the prevalence of hypertension by 33% in 2020-2030 is one of the global targets of non-communicable diseases. Blood pressure (BP) measurements performed by individuals and families have a high potential to improve the diagnosis and management of hypertension. The implementation of blood pressure measurements is carried out through increasing education and training for individuals and families in measuring blood pressure independently. Early detection through self-measurement of blood pressure and control of hypertension by health services is an effort to control hypertension. This study aimed was to identify the effect of blood pressure measurement training on early detection and control efforts for hypertensive patients at health service facilities. This research uses a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique used a purposive sampling method. with a total sample 24 respondents. The form of treatment is providing training to measure blood pressure using a digital blood pressure monitor. Before the training was conducted, the respondents' ability  to measure BP was measured first through a pre-test (initial observation before the intervention, after which the intervention was given (BP measurement), then a post-test (final observation) was conducted after the treatment was given, using the same measuring instrument. The result of this study, there was an effect of blood pressure measurement training on early detection and control efforts of hypertension patients in health care facilities with a p-value of 0.000. Independent blood pressure measurement training in individuals with hypertension has a positive impact on increasing knowledge and changing individual behavior in conducting early detection and control efforts of hypertension in healthcare facilities.

Abstract

The antioxidant properties of natural compounds have garnered significant attention for their potential therapeutic applications. Solanum ferox, a plant traditionally used in several countries for medicinal purposes, has been identified as possessing potential antioxidant properties. However, the extent and efficacy of its antioxidant capacity have not been thoroughly examined, creating a gap in understanding its effectiveness compared to established antioxidants like ascorbic acid. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of Solanum ferox using DPPH and FRAP assays across concentrations ranging from 20 to 100 µg/µl, with ascorbic acid serving as a standard reference. The DPPH assay measured the scavenging activity of both samples to assess their radical-quenching properties, while the FRAP assay evaluated their reducing power. Findings indicate that ascorbic acid exhibits significantly higher scavenging activity than Solanum ferox across all concentrations, with consistent activity ranging between 88.4% and 90.88% in the DPPH assay and from 45.16% to 83.89% in the FRAP assay. In contrast, Solanum ferox shows a gradual but much lower increase in activity, from 6.8% to 35.5% in the DPPH assay and from 10.59% to 33.82% in the FRAP assay, suggesting limited antioxidant potential. The study contributes to the understanding of the antioxidant properties of Solanum ferox, highlighting its limited efficacy compared to ascorbic acid and suggesting that further research is needed to explore its potential at higher concentrations or through alternative methods. These insights provide a foundational basis for future studies investigating Solanum ferox as a potential natural antioxidant source.

Abstract

The Maternal Mortality Rate is still high in Nigeria. Complete antenatal care (ANC) of eight visits during pregnancy is an important strategy to control this condition. This research analyzed the socioeconomic disparities in completed ANC in Nigeria. The study examined secondary data from the 2018 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey. The study included 21,792 women aged 15 to 49 who had given birth in the previous five years. We looked at eight control factors in addition to completed ANC as an outcome variable and socioeconomic as an exposure variable: domicile, age, religion, marital status, education, occupation, and parity. Data were analyzed using binary logistic regression. The result showed the completed ANC proportion in Nigeria is 21.6%. Meanwhile, the poorer were 1.316 times more likely than the poorest to perform completed ANC (AOR 1.316; 95% CI 1.316-1.317). The middle was 1.994 times more likely to achieve completed ANC than the poorest (AOR 1.994; 95% CI 1.993-1.994). Meanwhile, the richer were 2.808 times more likely than the poorest to achieve completed ANC (AOR 2.808; 95% CI 2.807-2.808). Moreover, the richest were 4.112 times more likely to perform completed ANC than the poorest in Nigeria (AOR 4.112; 95% CI 4.112-4.113). The study revealed significant socioeconomic disparities in the completion of ANC in Nigeria, with wealthier women being more likely to achieve completed ANC compared to their less-wealthy counterparts.

Abstract

The National HIV/AIDS Strategy predicts that 86% of people with HIV (PLHIV) worldwide will know their HIV status by 2022, the remaining 14% do not know that they have HIV and still need access to HIV testing services. As an effort to realize the Sustainable Development Goals and to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS by 2030, the Indonesian Ministry of Health needs to design and implement appropriate prevention mechanisms related to HIV/AIDS by conducting early detection of HIV, namely by empowering Community Health Centers to provide HIV testing services and counseling. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing HIV testing at Public Health Centers among women of childbearing age in Indonesia. This study uses a cross-sectional design with data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic Health Survey (SDKI). Data were analyzed using the logistic regression. The variable in this study were demographic sharacteristics and HIV testing. HIV testing at Public Health Centers among childbearing age in Indonesia was at 32.5%. Several factors influencing HIV testing were identified, including region (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.10 - 1.35), wealth index (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74 - 0.91), residence (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74 - 0.91), health insurance coverage (OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04 - 1.27), level of knowledge (OR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.83 - 1.01), stigma (OR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.73 - 0.90), and AIDS knowledge source from health professionals (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.70 - 2.12). To optimize HIV testing coverage, healthcare workers should enhance awareness by providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS education. This can be done through various media, such as posters, brochures, and community-involved seminars. The government must ensure HIV testing services are accessible in all regions, including rural and remote areas. Additionally, continuous monitoring and evaluation of HIV testing programs at Public Health Centers are necessary. This will help improve and tailor programs to meet community needs and address influencing factors effectively.

Abstract

The postpartum period is a critical phase for both mothers and newborns, during which the mother's physical and psychological recovery occurs alongside the initiation of breastfeeding. Although breastfeeding is a natural process, many postpartum mothers face challenges in initiating and sustaining effective breastfeeding practices. Homecare has emerged as an effective strategy to improve maternal and child health. This study aims to analyze the impact of homecare on breastfeeding skills in postpartum mothers. The study was conducted in Surakarta City used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest with control group approach. Purposive sampling was employed, involving a total of 50 respondents divided equally into two groups: an intervention group and a control group. A 30-day breastfeeding skills training intervention was provided to postpartum mothers, carried out by midwives, with each session lasting 30 minutes per day. Data analysis was conducted used the paired t-test the Wilcoxon signed- rank test. Results showed that the paired t-test of the control group pretest and posttest with a mean value of 0.52 and the paired t-test of the intervention group pretest and posttest with a mean value of 5.44. While the statistical significance showed the p-value for the control group was 0.0018 and for the intervention group was approximately 0.0000000596. These findings demonstrate strong statistical significance, supporting the hypothesis that homecare exert a positive effect. In conclusion, homecare play a significant role in enhancing breastfeeding skills among postpartum mothers, with greater improvements observed in the intervention group compared to the control group.

Abstract

More than 80% of breast cancer patients in Indonesia who are diagnosed are at an advanced stage. Advanced cancer treatment is directed at palliative care from the beginning of diagnosis.  Patients undergoing palliative care must adjust to the changing needs that occur during palliative care in line with the decline in the condition of the disease and the impact of its treatment. It can affect changes in the patient's daily life patterns. This study was conducted to explore the unmet needs of breast cancer patients during palliative care in the context of the culture and healthcare system in Indonesia. This study utilized a descriptive qualitative phenomenological method. In-depth interviews with semi-structured interview guidelines were conducted on 14 breast cancer patients undergoing palliative care. The thematic analysis uses the Colaizzi approach. The results of this study obtained three specific themes of unmet needs in the study participants: 1) the need to achieve the 'New Normal' to return to activities with enthusiasm and hope, 2) the need for appreciation and recognition, and 3) Support to overcome the fear of death and the uncertainty of the future. Breast cancer patients want to return to their activities with enthusiasm and hope despite facing physical limitations and emotional challenges. In conclusion, achieving the 'New Normal' is an important aspect of this adjustment process, which involves physical, emotional, social, and spiritual support. This finding differs from previous research, where other publications did not explicitly mention the need to achieve the 'New Normal'. Therefore, the role of nurses in addressing unmet needs, both in the context of the 'New Normal' and more generally, is crucial in palliative care for breast cancer patients. This support enhances the patient's quality of life and gives greater meaning to the remainder of their lives.

Abstract

Stunting is a growth disorder of children under five due to malnutrition, with the prevalence rate in Indonesia in 2023 reaching 21.5%. To reduce stunting rates, premarital and preconception classes are essential in providing knowledge and skills to prospective parents to prevent stunting. This study aims to develop an intervention module for premarital and preconception classes that integrates education on stunting prevention with coping skills training. The study also seeks to measure the effects of the module on participants’ perceived stress, coping skills, and self-efficacy, as part of an effort to strengthen the preparedness of prospective brides in maintaining maternal and child health and preventing stunting. This study is a quasy experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study were women in the premarital and preconception period. The sampling technique used was probability sampling, a simple random sampling of 41 people—data analysis using the Wilcoxon Test. The study results showed significant differences in three variables after the premarital class intervention. The stress perception scale experienced a decrease in mean score from 20.93 to 18.83 with a difference of -2.10 (p=0.002). Self-confidence experienced an average increase from 44.76 to 48.27 with a difference of 3.51 (p=0.002). Coping strategies also increased the average score from 97.34 to 99.24, with a difference of 1.90 (p=0.023). Premarital classes are effective in reducing stress and increasing self-confidence and coping strategies. Premarital classes and preconception programs with coping skills need to be expanded to prevent stunting.
