Abstract

Smoking remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, with occupation playing a key role in shaping smoking behavior. This study investigated how occupational type affects smoking behavior among Indonesian adults. This study was using data from the 2021 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), which included 9,155 respondents. The dependent variable was smoking behavior (daily smoker, non-daily smoker, or never smoker), and the main independent variable was occupational type. Control variables included age, gender, education level, and place of residence. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, chi-square test, ANOVA, and multinomial logistic regression. The results showed that 25.47% of adults were daily smokers, 5.95% were non-daily smokers, and 68.57% were never smokers. Most participants were unemployed (47.67%), indoors workers (15.03%), outdoors (32.90%), or in both settings (4.40%). Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between smoking behavior and type of occupation, gender, education, place of residence, and age. Daily smoking was more common among men, individuals with lower education, rural residents, and outdoor workers. Multivariate analysis indicated that outdoor workers were significantly more likely to smoke daily than indoor workers (OR = 1.36–1.96). Compared with unemployed individuals, those occupation indoors, outdoors, and in both environments were 1.82, 2.87, and 2.94 times more likely to smoke daily, respectively. These findings suggest that employment, especially outdoor employment, is strongly associated with daily smoking. Targeted smoking prevention programs should prioritize outdoor workers, men, rural residents, and those with lower education levels.

Abstract

Risk factors for alcohol consumption can accelerate the development of hepatitis B infection leading to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). North Sulawesi is the second province with the highest number of alcohol drinkers in Indonesia. Cap Tikus is a traditional community drink which is traditionally made from palm tree liquid. The tradition of drinking Cap Tikus is usually done by consuming it together in the same glass; where this behavior is risky behavior for the transmission of hepatitis B infection. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the distribution of hepatitis B infection based on the results of the HBsAg examination in the South Minahasa area. The research design is quantitative with a descriptive research type. The population of the study was Cap Tikus drinkers in six locations in South Minahasa Regency. The sample consisted of 309 respondents, found through a random sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research variable was the result of the HBV examination using the Enzyme Link Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. The results showed that 67.6% of respondents were in the age range of 30-50 years, and 50.1% worked as farmers. The majority of respondents (31.7%) consumed Cap Tikus 3 times a week, with an alcohol level of 45-50% as many as 47.9 respondents; 41.1% of respondents consumed 250-350 ml in one drink. The results of the ELISA reader examination showed that 4 respondents (1.3%) gave results above the cut-off value of 1.007. Based on the results of the research conducted, this study concludes that as many as 1.3% of respondents were declared positive for HBsAg through the ELISA examination and were only found in Ranomea Village, South Minahasa Regency. It is hoped that the government and health workers will be able to provide health education about the dangers of drinking alcohol excessively and educate about the risk factors for transmission of the hepatitis B virus.

Abstract

Physical inactivity remains a major global health concern, with approximately one in four adults not meeting recommended activity levels. Virtual competitions have emerged as an alternative approach to encourage physical activity, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a virtual race event on physical activity behavior in adults with a sedentary lifestyle. A cohort study was conducted involving 68 participants, of whom 32 completed both pre- and post-event assessments. Physical activity levels were measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) before and four weeks after the virtual race. Participants were categorized into a sedentary group (<600 MET-minutes/week) and an active group (≥600 MET-minutes/week) based on baseline data. The McNemar test was used to assess changes in physical activity classification. Results showed that in the sedentary group, the number of active participants increased from 0 to 5 (41.67%), while in the active group, the number of participants who remained active decreased from 20 to 13 (65%). However, the difference between the groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.56). These findings suggest that while virtual race events may offer motivational value, their short-term effect on physical activity behavior may be limited without additional support mechanisms. Future studies should consider larger samples, longer follow-up periods, and the integration of behavioral strategies to enhance engagement and promote sustained physical activity, especially among previously inactive populations.

Abstract

Caring for a child with a chronic condition imposes significant physical and psychological burdens on mothers, including increased stress, anxiety, depression, and difficulties balancing daily caregiving responsibilities with personal and social roles, which negatively impact their overall psychological well-being. This study aims to analyze the factors (maternal and child characteristics) associated with the psychological well-being of mothers who care for children with chronic conditions. A cross-sectional correlation design was used with 204 mothers of chronically ill children at Hospital in Malang City, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments in this study are a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using ordinal logistic regression. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Most mothers have moderate psychological well-being (72,1%). Multivariate analysis showed that mothers aged 26–35 years (OR = 0.113, p = 0.020), treatment duration under 1 year (OR = 5.551, p = 0.001), living in a village (OR = 0.221, p = 0.009), high family income (reference group, OR = 1.00), low obstacles to care (OR = 5.948, p = 0.009), good partner support (OR = 16.609, p = 0.002), good family support (OR = 6.062, p = 0.031), and good health worker support (OR = 6.965, p = 0.036) were significantly associated with increased maternal psychological well-being. Health workers can actively provide psychosocial support for mothers caring for children with chronic conditions, such as counseling. In addition, health workers must work with partners and families to create an emotionally supportive environment for mothers.

Abstract

The future of the country depends on the optimal growth and development of children. About 10% of Indonesia's population are toddlers, and most of them experience growth and development problems. It is important to stimulate, detect and intervene in child development, including exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of exclusive breastfeeding on infant growth and development using the Android-based Stimulation, Early Detection, and Intervention of Child Growth and Development test. The research method utilized is an analytical cross-sectional observational design with 83 respondents purposively selected and conducted from June to August 2023. The data analysis utilized includes the chi-square test, Phi (Φ), and Cramer's V. The instruments included a checklist form, the mobile application for Stimulation, Early Detection, and Intervention of Child Growth and Development version 1.1, a weighing scale, a height measurement tool, and the Maternal and Child Health Book. The research findings indicate that there is no significant relationship between Exclusive Breastfeeding and Infant Growth (p-value = 0.737, phi/Cramer's V = 0.165). However, there is a significant relationship between Exclusive Breastfeeding and Infant Development (p-value = 0.003, phi/Cramer's V = 0.356). It can be concluded that there is no correlation between Exclusive Breastfeeding and infant growth, but there is a relationship with infant development. Therefore, it is recommended to enhance public education regarding the importance of Exclusive Breastfeeding, and further research to understand the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and infant development, and to apply the findings for targeted intervention programs, particularly utilizing Android-based apps for easier access to information and support for mothers.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that has become a global health concern, with Indonesia being the country with the second-highest number of pulmonary TB cases after India. The level of knowledge and preventive behavior regarding TB significantly influences both the spread and the success of TB treatment. This study aims to evaluate the impact of health education based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) on TB prevention knowledge and behavior among patients. The study design utilized a quasi-experimental approach with control and intervention groups, where the intervention was administered through face-to-face education and followed by smart chat support sessions for one month. A total of 50 respondents participated, divided into treatment and control groups. Data analysis employed the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney tests. The study results show that the statistical analysis indicated a significant improvement in knowledge and preventive behavior in the intervention group post-intervention (p=0.000), while the control group showed no significant change. The finding of this this improvement suggests that TPB-based interventions, which encompass attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, are effective in influencing health behavior changes. The conclusion is TPB-based health education through face-to-face sessions and smart chat follow-ups can be recommended as an intervention strategy to enhance TB prevention knowledge and behavior among high-risk populations.

Abstract

The volume of waste increases each year; however, household waste management remains inadequate. Housewives are often seen as the key individuals responsible for managing waste at home. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors influencing housewives' behavior toward household waste management in Terusan Village, located in the Mempawah Hilir District. This cross-sectional study was conducted from February to June, involving a sample of 85 housewives selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results indicated no correlation between housewives' behavior in waste management and their age (p-value = 0.414), education level (p-value = 0.107), knowledge (p-value = 0.364), attitude (p-value = 0.439), availability of facilities (p-value = 0.207), or distance to temporary disposal sites (p-value = 0.438). In contrast, the study found a significant correlation between employment status (p-value = 0.001), family income (p-value = 0.007), and family support (p-value = 0.020) with the behavior of housewives in household waste management. The findings suggest that while demographic factors like age, education, and knowledge do not significantly impact waste management practices, employment status, family income, and support from family members do play a critical role in shaping housewives' behavior in waste management in Terusan Village.
