AN-NAHDLOH: Journal of Education and Islamic Studies, published by the Master of Islamic Religious Education (MPAI) Postgraduate Program, Raden Rahmat Islamic University (UNIRA) Malang. This journal is published three times a year (January, May, and September). This journal features articles on research results and conceptual studies in Islamic education, both in Indonesia and abroad. Abstract

This study aims to describe how fiqh learning strategies based on a contextual approach (Contextual Teaching and Learning / CTL) are implemented at SMAN 1 Cihaurbeuti, Ciamis Regency, particularly in an effort to connect Islamic law provisions with the realities of students' lives. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design with data collection techniques that include direct observation of the learning process, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and a review of relevant learning documents. The findings show that fiqh teachers implement contextual learning through a structured series of processes. The initial stage is realized in lesson planning that deliberately links fiqh material with students' concrete experiences. The next stage is evident in the implementation of learning that utilizes various strategies, such as interactive discussions, simulations, case study analysis, and direct practice related to worship and muamalah activities in daily life. In the evaluation stage, teachers applied authentic assessment by focusing on observing worship practices, project-based assignments, and joint reflection activities. This study also identified factors that influence the successful implementation of CTL, including a religious school atmosphere and adequate teacher competence as supporting factors, while limitations in learning media and time allocation were the main obstacles. In general, the results of the study show that a contextual approach to fiqh learning not only improves students' conceptual understanding but also strengthens their ability to apply Islamic law in real life.   Keywords: learning strategies, Islamic Religious Education, fiqh, contextual learning (CTL), Islamic law, SMAN 1 Cihaurbeuti, Ciamis Regency

Abstract

The era of global transformation, marked by the rapid advancement of information technology, the globalization of thought, and the openness of religious discourse, has brought serious implications for the sustainability of Ahlussunnah wal Jama’ah (Aswaja). On the one hand, religious radicalism develops through rigid and exclusive textual interpretations; on the other hand, religious liberalism emerges through approaches that tend to be relativistic and deconstructive toward Islamic teachings. Both currents pose ideological challenges to the existence of Aswaja as a moderate Islamic manhaj. This article aims to analyze the forms of challenges posed by radicalism and liberalism to the sustainability of Aswaja in the era of global transformation and to reaffirm the relevance of Aswaja values in maintaining religious balance. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a library research method to analyze classical and contemporary literature related to Aswaja, radicalism, and liberalism. The findings indicate that Aswaja principles such as tawassuth (moderation), tawazun (balance), tasamuh (tolerance), and i‘tidal (justice) play a strategic role in responding to global challenges and sustaining moderate Islam. Therefore, strengthening the internalization of Aswaja values is an urgent necessity in addressing the dynamics of contemporary Islamic thought.   Keywords: Aswaja, Radicalism, Liberalism, Global Transformation, Moderate Islam

Abstract

This study is motivated by the issue of fragmentation between religion, philosophy, and science, which has often been debated. In this regard, al-Farabi contributed his thoughts on the relationship between religion, philosophy, and science. The purpose of this study is to explain al-Farabi's thoughts on religion, philosophy, and science, and to explain their relevance to the development of the Islamic Education curriculum in the contemporary era. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review. The results of this study conclude that al-Farabi's thoughts offer an approach that integrates religion, philosophy, and science. He places revelation and reason in harmony as sources of divine truth. The relevance of al-Farabi's thoughts to the Islamic Religious Education curriculum in the contemporary era lies in the importance of creating an educational system that balances spiritual, moral, and intellectual aspects. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the theological thoughts of Imam Al-Asy'ari and Imam Al-Maturidi in strengthening the religious character of students at the Bahrul Ulum Awipari Junior High School in Tasikmalaya City. The background arises from the increasing character crisis, declining religious awareness, and weakening spiritual values ​​​​amid the impact of globalization and digital culture. These two theological figures of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah offer a moderate approach that emphasizes the balance between reason and revelation, making it a suitable basis for forming a critical, tolerant religious character and adapting to changing times. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, collecting data through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and a review of supporting literature. The results of the study indicate that the theological values ​​​​of Al-Asy'ari and Al-Maturidi have been internalized in the teaching and learning process, school culture, and the habit of practicing the values ​​​​of tasamuh, tawazun, and i'tidal. The implementation of these values ​​​​has a positive impact on students' religious attitudes and behavior, especially in improving moderate religious understanding and character. Abstract

Classical Islamic education is an important foundation that laid the scientific and civilizational groundwork in the Islamic world. However, its relevance is often questioned in the face of modern educational challenges that tend to be secular and instrumentalistic. This article aims to explore the fundamental concepts, highlight the thoughts of major figures, and analyze the relevance of the intellectual heritage of classical Islamic education in the contemporary context. This research uses a library research method with a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach. Data sources are derived from the primary works of classical Muslim thinkers and relevant secondary literature. The results show that: (1) The concept of classical Islamic education is integral, unifying cognitive, affective, and spiritual aspects with an emphasis on adab (ethics), hikmah (wisdom), and tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the soul). (2) Figures such as al-Ghazali, Ibn Sina, and Ibn Khaldun made monumental contributions by emphasizing moral education, balanced rational development, and the role of education in building civilization. (3) The relevance of this classical thought lies in its ability to offer a holistic educational paradigm that integrates worldly and otherworldly knowledge, prioritizes character formation, and encourages lifelong learning. Abstract

Islamic education constitutes a fundamental foundation in shaping character, morality, and the socio-cultural order of the Muslim community, whose relevance continues to be tested amid the dynamics of contemporary change. This study aims to examine the role of Islamic education in the formation of Muslim socio-cultural life and to analyze the contemporary relevance of KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s educational thought. This research employs a qualitative library research method, focusing on conceptual and theoretical analysis of relevant literature, particularly Adab al-‘Alim wa al-Muta‘allim and other supporting academic sources. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic analysis approach to identify key themes related to Islamic educational concepts, values of adab and morality, teacher–student relationships, and the socio-cultural implications of education. The findings reveal that KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s educational thought emphasizes adab and moral character as the core foundation of education, rejects the dichotomy between religious and secular knowledge, and promotes the integration of intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions. Islamic education, from his perspective, plays a significant role in shaping a civilized, moderate, and ethical Muslim society. The relevance of KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s thought in the contemporary era lies in its holistic and contextual educational paradigm, which remains responsive to the challenges of globalization, moral degradation, and the evolving socio-cultural dynamics of modern society. Abstract

This paper analyzes the implications of the ideas of Zamaksyari Dhofier and Nurcholish Madjid on reforming pesantren education in Indonesian society. To this end, a critical document analysis is conducted using a qualitative approach, evaluating the ideas presented in Tradisi Pesantren and Bilik-bilik Pesantren, supplemented by secondary literature on pesantren modernization. From the findings, it is apparent that the ideas of the reform-minded thinkers present a comprehensive framework for the five main aspects of pesantren (dormitory, mosque, classical texts, students, and kyai leader); the learning of classical texts through "sorogan and bandongan disciplines"; and that the kyai is a quasi-absolute authority, molding the community's moral and social orientation. On the contrary, the ideas of the modernizers center on the futility of the explicitly formulated educational aims and goals; the limitation and weaknesses of the dualistic notions on the religious and "general" sciences; and the need for fundamental reforms in pesantren education in the curriculum, method, organizational, and socio-economic terms. The integration of the ideas on a conceptual framework presents a leadership and curriculum construct that is socially adaptive. This paper offers a new insight into the area of Islamic education as it attempts to reconcile the romance of tradition, as described by Zamakhshari's ideas, with the reformist ideas of Nurcholish.   Keywords: Curriculum, Kyai, Pesantren

Abstract

This study aims to examine and formulate the integration of Sufism and psychology within the framework of Islamic psychotherapy as an effort to develop a holistic and contextually relevant therapeutic model. The background of this research is rooted in the limitations of conventional psychotherapeutic approaches that have not fully accommodated spiritual dimensions, particularly within Muslim communities. This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, involving the analysis and synthesis of relevant scholarly literature published over the last five years on Sufism, psychology, and Islamic psychotherapy. Data were collected from academic journal articles, scholarly books, and research documents, and analyzed through content analysis and thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that Sufism and psychology function as complementary disciplines in Islamic psychotherapy. The classical stages of Sufism, takhalli, tahalli, and tajall, can be systematically aligned with modern psychotherapeutic processes, ranging from psychological assessment to the evaluation of therapeutic outcomes. This integration positions Sufism as the spiritual foundation of therapy, while psychology provides the scientific and operational framework. The study concludes that integrating Sufism and psychology strengthens the biopsychosocial–spiritual paradigm of Islamic psychotherapy, offering both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of culturally and spiritually sensitive mental health services. Abstract

This article aims to formulate a pesantren epistemological framework as a model for knowledge integration in contemporary Islam. The study is motivated by the fragmentation of modern knowledge, which separates revelation, scientific rationality, and spirituality, resulting in a dichotomy between religious knowledge and modern science. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature-based method in the form of a critical literature review. The data consist of scientific journal articles indexed in SINTA and Scopus published between 2020 and 2025, focusing on pesantren epistemology, Islamic epistemology, knowledge integration, and spirituality in Islamic education. Data analysis was conducted through thematic and comparative-conceptual analysis to identify dominant patterns, conceptual strengths, and epistemological gaps in previous studies. The research results indicate that Islamic boarding school epistemology has strong epistemological potential to be developed as an integrative knowledge system. It places revelation and Islamic scientific tradition as the primary normative sources, rationality as a methodological instrument, and spirituality as the ethical and epistemic foundation in the process of knowledge production and validation. However, previous studies tend to be fragmentary and emphasize implementation aspects. This article presents a conceptual synthesis that positions Islamic boarding schools as an integrative Islamic epistemological paradigm, capable of bridging the Islamic scientific tradition, modern science, and spirituality holistically and coherently. Abstract

This article aims to examine the importance of Islamic moderation in fostering interreligious tolerance in Indonesia, a country characterized by cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. Islamic moderation, or Islam wasathiyyah, is understood as a religious attitude that emphasizes justice, balance, and tolerance in social life. This study employs a library research method by reviewing various sources such as books, academic journals, and official documents related to religious moderation, tolerance, and Indonesia’s multicultural society. This approach is intended to gain a comprehensive understanding of the concept of Islamic moderation and its application in socio-religious life. The findings indicate that Islamic moderation plays a strategic role in reducing extremist attitudes, preventing religion-based conflicts, and strengthening social harmony amid Indonesia’s diverse society. Furthermore, Islamic moderation functions as a bridge between religious teachings and social realities by balancing the vertical relationship between humans and God and the horizontal relationship among fellow human beings. The implementation of Islamic moderation through education, interfaith dialogue, social cooperation, and public policy support has proven to be relevant in strengthening interreligious tolerance. Therefore, Islamic moderation is not only a theological demand but also a social and national necessity in maintaining unity, peace, and the integrity of the Indonesian nation.   Keywords: Islamic Moderation, Multicultural Society, Religious Tolerance
