AN-NAHDLOH: Journal of Education and Islamic Studies, published by the Master of Islamic Religious Education (MPAI) Postgraduate Program, Raden Rahmat Islamic University (UNIRA) Malang. Abstract

This study aims to describe the cultivation of moderate faith values through the theological perspectives of Al-Ashʿarī and Al-Māturīdī within the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum at MIS Nagarakasih 2 Tasikmalaya. The background of this research is rooted in the challenges of globalization and the diversity of religious interpretations that influence students’ ways of thinking, thereby necessitating a moderate approach in religious education. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation and interviews. The findings indicate that moderate faith values such as tasāmuḥ (tolerance), iʿtidāl (justice), tawāzun (balance), and tawassuṭ (the middle path) are integrated into the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Islamic Religious Education learning. PAI teachers play a strategic role in instilling these values through role modeling, habituation of moderate attitudes, and the strengthening of school culture that supports the learning process. The implementation of moderate faith values is supported by a flexible curriculum and institutional support, although challenges remain, particularly those related to students’ individual characteristics. Overall, the theological perspectives of Al-Ashʿarī and Al-Māturīdī remain relevant as a theological foundation for shaping students who possess strong faith, open-minded thinking, and moderate behavior in accordance with the Islamic values of rahmatan lil ʿālamīn.   Keywords: Moderate Faith, Al-Asy'ari, Al-Maturidi, Islamic Religious Education, Religious Moderation.

Abstract

This study examines the comparative method in Islamic studies, focusing on its conceptual framework, practical applications, and contributions to contemporary scholarly development. Using a qualitative desk research approach with content analysis, the study critically reviews classical and modern authoritative sources. The comparative method is positioned as an epistemological tool for systematically analyzing similarities and differences in Islamic thought systematically and objectively. The discussion explores its application across various disciplines, including Islamic jurisprudence, Qur'anic exegesis, hadith studies, and the intellectual dialogue between theology, philosophy, and Sufism. The findings demonstrate that diversity in Islamic thought is not arbitrary but rooted in different methodological approaches, historical contexts, and epistemic frameworks. The comparative method plays a crucial role in mapping intellectual diversity, reducing sectarian bias, and fostering constructive academic critique. Furthermore, it contributes to intellectual renewal by enabling Islamic studies to address contemporary challenges such as modernity, pluralism, and digital transformation. Abstract

In Islamic theology, the debate over the status of those who commit major sins (kabā'ir) is an important issue that greatly influences the formation of concepts of faith, deeds, and salvation.  Views on the status of those who commit major sins differ among the three main schools of thought: the Khawarij, the Mu'tazilah, and the Asy'ariyah.  While the Mu'tazilah consider them to be manzilah baina al-manzilatain—between believers and unbelievers—the Khawarij consider them to be unbelievers who have left Islam.  According to the Asy'ariyah, people who commit major sins remain believers, even though they are fāsiq, and their fate is ultimately decided by Allah. Using qualitative methodology and a literature review approach, this study analyzes the perspectives of these three schools of thought and their implications for Islamic creed education. The data collected came from primary and secondary literature discussing contemporary and classical Islamic theology. The analysis was conducted descriptively and comparatively to describe the conceptual differences between each school of thought and assess the pedagogical values that can be integrated into faith learning. The results of the study show that the differences in the views of the three schools of thought have theological and pedagogical consequences. Asy'ariyah offers space for spiritual rehabilitation and moderation, while Khawarij emphasizes moral firmness.  By teaching proportionally and comparatively, the three schools of thought can enrich faith education to shape students who are critical, moderate, and have good character.  This study confirms that a comparative theological approach in Islamic education is crucial to prevent extremism and create a balanced and contextual understanding of faith in today's world.   Keywords: Perpetrators of Major Sins, Islamic Theology, Khawarij, Mu'tazilah, and Asy'ariyah, Education in Faith, Religious Moderation

Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent to which the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) strategy contributes to character building and the development of Islamic thinking among students through Islamic Religious Education (PAI) lessons at Al-Ma'arif Cipicung Junior High School, Tasikmalaya Regency. This study is based on empirical evidence that PAI teaching practices in schools are often positioned as the delivery of normative and conceptual material, so that the religious values taught are not fully realized in the attitudes and behavior of students in their daily lives. To uncover this phenomenon, this study uses a qualitative approach by combining observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis as the main sources of data collection. The findings show that the application of CTL in PAI learning is able to create a more participatory learning process, deepen religious understanding that is relevant to the context of students' lives, and encourage the internalization of Islamic values in social interactions and daily practices. Linking PAI material to students' concrete experiences has proven effective in fostering religious character, such as honesty, a sense of responsibility, and social awareness, while also developing a critical and reflective Islamic mindset. However, this study also notes several obstacles, including the continued strong reliance on lecture methods and the lack of student engagement.   Keywords: contextual learning, Islamic religious education, Islamic character

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the challenges of the digital era and examine innovative Aqidah Akhlak learning strategies in strengthening students’ religious character at MAN 1 Tuban. The digital era presents both opportunities and challenges for Islamic education. While digital technology enables more engaging learning processes, it also poses serious challenges, such as social media addiction, low digital literacy, behavioral changes, and unequal access to technology, which may weaken students’ religious values. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers, students, school leaders, and parents, as well as relevant documentation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, with validity ensured through the triangulation of sources and methods. The findings reveal that the primary challenges in strengthening students’ religious character include the excessive use of social media, a decline in the quality of worship, a limited ability to critically assess religious information, and reduced social interaction. To address these challenges, MAN 1 Tuban implements innovative Aqidah Akhlak learning through interactive digital media, active learning methods, curriculum integration, teacher competency development, and collaboration with parents and the community. These innovations play a significant role in reinforcing students’ religious character, particularly in fostering discipline in worship, religious attitudes, responsibility, and moral integrity amid the rapid flow of digital culture.   Keywords: Aqidah Akhlak, Digital Era, Learning Innovation, MAN 1 Tuban, Religious Character

Abstract

This study aims to enhance teachers’ competence in developing information technology–based learning materials within the Islamic boarding school context. The training and mentoring program was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Sirojul Ulum over a period of one month, involving ten teachers from various subjects. The research employed a participatory approach consisting of training sessions, implementation mentoring, and performance evaluation. During the program, participants received training on the use of digital tools, the development of instructional media using applications such as PowerPoint, Canva, and Google Classroom, as well as the creation of interactive learning videos. The results indicated a significant improvement in teachers’ ability to design and utilize digital learning media independently. Approximately 80% of participants successfully produced functional digital learning products, while all participants demonstrated improved digital literacy, as observed and assessed through interviews. Moreover, continuous mentoring fostered teachers’ motivation and creativity in integrating technology to create more engaging and student-centered learning experiences. In conclusion, the training and mentoring program effectively strengthened teachers’ digital competencies in Islamic boarding schools. Similar initiatives are recommended to be implemented continuously with institutional support and adequate infrastructure to promote inclusive and adaptive digital transformation in Islamic education.   Keywords: Teacher Training, Mentoring, Information Technology, Islamic Boarding School, Learning Media

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes in various fields, including educational research. AI not only serves as a technical tool, but also has the potential to change the way researchers design, conduct, and analyze research. This study aims to map the opportunities for utilizing AI in the development of educational research methods, identify challenges and limitations, and formulate recommendations for the critical, ethical, and contextual application of AI. The method used is library research by analyzing national and international scientific journal articles relevant to the theme of AI and educational research methodology. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using content analysis to identify themes, patterns, and trends in AI utilization. The results of the study show that AI offers great opportunities to improve the efficiency and depth of research through the automation of data collection and analysis, bibliometric-based literature mapping, and support for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research designs. However, this study also found a number of serious challenges, such as algorithmic bias, the risk of data privacy violations, limitations of context and interpretation, and inequalities in access to infrastructure and technological literacy. Therefore, the integration of AI in educational research requires a clear ethical and methodological framework, increased researcher capacity, and supportive policies and infrastructure so that the use of AI can improve the quality and accountability of educational research in the digital age.   Keywords: artificial intelligence, educational research methods, literature review, opportunities and challenges, research ethics

Abstract

Education is an effort to acquire knowledge and bring about change through formal, non-formal, and informal learning, each with specific objectives. To achieve these educational objectives, a structured educational plan known as a curriculum is required. This study is motivated by the need to strengthen the philosophical foundation of the Islamic education curriculum in response to changes in the era, social dynamics, and the development of knowledge, by examining Ibn Khaldun’s epistemology and curriculum as a basis for formulating the Islamic education curriculum. This study employs a conceptual approach through library research, using Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun as the primary source, supported by various relevant scholarly works as secondary sources. The findings indicate that Ibn Khaldun’s epistemology and curriculum make a significant contribution to the Islamic education curriculum through the integration of revelation, reason, and experience as sources of knowledge. This contribution is reflected in his classification of religious and rational sciences, the categorization of knowledge into linguistic, traditional, and rational sciences, as well as the application of a gradual learning method (tadarruj) that is oriented toward learners’ intellectual development. These findings demonstrate that Ibn Khaldun’s thought remains relevant as a philosophical foundation for developing an Islamic education curriculum that balances cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects and is adaptive to the dynamics of contemporary Islamic education.   Keywords: Ibn Khaldun, Epistemology, Curriculum, Islamic Education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of digital marketing to the effectiveness of educational marketing strategies at Darul Qur'an Islamic Boarding School. The study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques include semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies involving the head of public relations, social media administrators, registration staff, and prospective guardians of students. Data analysis was conducted through thematic analysis with the stages of coding, categorization, and drawing main themes. Data validity was strengthened through source and method triangulation, member checking, audit trails, and thick description presentation. The results showed that digital marketing was able to expand the reach of pesantren promotion, accelerate the decision-making process of prospective guardians, increase trust through two-way interaction, strengthen the professional image of the institution, and improve the efficiency of the registration administration. The contribution of this study lies in strengthening the empirical evidence of the role of digital marketing as an educational marketing strategy for pesantren that is adaptive to technological transformations and the needs of modern society.   Keywords: digital marketing, Islamic boarding schools, educational marketing, trust, guardians

Abstract

The dynamics of education in the era of digital disruption present a significant challenge for institutions to balance technological efficiency with character depth. This research is motivated by the dualism of the educational system in Indonesia, where public schools and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) compete for student loyalty through contrasting service management approaches. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the fundamental differences in service characteristics between these two institutions and identify the determinantal factors influencing student satisfaction and loyaltywithin the 2021-2025 period. The methodology employed is a qualitative approach with al compalraltive study design through library research. Daltal were alnallyzed quallitaltively-descriptively using content analysis techniques applied to government regulations, reputable journal literature, alnd contemporalry policy documents. The results reveall al significalnt distinction in service quality priority dimensions. Public schools alre dominalted by the tangible dimension through digital infrastructure, resulting in cognitive saltisfalction alnd functionall-tralnsalctionall loyallty. Conversely, parents excel in the empathy and assurance dimensions, fostering alffective saltisfalction alnd long-term normative-emotional loyalty. In conclusion, this research formalizes the "Holistic Education Service Malnalgement" paradigm as an ideal synthesis that synergizes the managerial precision of public schools with the moral depth of personnel.
