Abstract

Interactive multimedia based learning containing problem solving may have been researched, however there are stigma that learning how to do problem solving conventionally particularly for colleague students is still favorable. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate factors affect the student learning outcomes. The independent variable is a teaching method in the form of interactive multimedia based on problem solving (IMM-PS) and the dependent variable is students' thinking ability in physics.  Specifically, this study aims to analyze the problem solving abilities of students in physics education programs after they have been exposed to interactive multimedia based problem solving methods. The research type is quasi-experiment. The sample were second year physics education students who studying wave electric magnetic subjects, as many as seventy students. The test of science process skills in the form of formal descriptions as well as reasoning tests in the form of descriptions were used as instruments for this study. The results show that the problem solving ability of students who study physics using interactive multi-media based problem solving is better than students who learn through conventional methods.

Abstract

Students generally know that cheating and plagiarism are violations of academic ethics, but some still do it. The study of academic dishonesty has been more into quantitative approaches, thus it cannot explain the dynamics of moral psychology about the decision making of cheating and plagiarism. This study explores the role of the consideration of the value of risk, shame, and guilt in utilitarian moral judgment in academic dishonesty behavior, as a solution to the views of theoretical debates about the role of emotions and cognitive morals in explaining good and bad behavior. This research used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to explore the meaning of the experience of conducting academic dishonesty by interviewing 66 college students. The results showed that ignorance of shame and the absence of guilt played a role in weakening the utilitarian moral judgment of students to act honestly in the face of examinations and assignments. These findings contributed to the importance of strengthening moral and ethical education for students in academic programs.

Abstract

Promoting reflective thinking in daily teaching practice is vital to prepare students to live in a more challenging world. Rich tasks are one of the promising tasks that could be used as pedagogy trend to develop students' reflective thinking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe the usefulness of rich mathematical tasks including how teachers use them in their teaching practice and the improvement of students’ reflective thinking following the rich tasks based instruction. This study employed a teaching experiment within a case study design. Participants were 28 Year 7 students of one the junior high school in Aceh, Indonesia. The instrument of the study is three valid and reliable rich mathematical tasks administered to the students through student worksheet. The results of the study show that rich tasks provided students with the opportunity to solve real-world problems by questioning their understanding and thinking reflectively. It also found that most students in the classroom were able to achieve the low level of reflective thinking with classroom mean score is 60. This value fairly enough since reflective thinking is a complicated concept. Subsequently, the results indicate the rich mathematical tasks approach hold potential in enhancing students’ reflective thinking ability.

Abstract

The mastery of foreign languages, in particular English which is applied predominantly in the international scope is one form of improving the quality of an indvidual. This research aims to find empirical support for relationships between optimism, social support, academic self-efficacy and mastery of academic English paragraph writing skills mediated by perceptions of Siri’ cultural values. Siri’ cultural values are living laws which becomes the guidance in think, act, and build interpersonal relationship with other individuals. The instruments of this research applied writing tasks, scales of optimism, social support, academic self-efficacy, and perceptions of Siri’ cultural values. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that the relationship between optimism, social support, and academic self-efficacy and mastery of academic English paragraph writing skills will be stronger when students are able to perceive cultural values of Siri’ well. It is worthy of attention for educators and education observers that when students are required to be able to master a learning material not only from the cognitive side concerned, but also the psychological side of students must be considered.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education can facilitate students’ competency development and enhance their self-employment potential. Students’ involvement in entrepreneurship is influenced by their emotions, especially in the early stages of business start-ups. Without exploiting potential business opportunities, entrepreneurship will not occur. This study aims to determine positive emotion effects on the relationship between entrepreneurship education and business opportunity exploitation. The study’s sample comprise of 152 final year university students. A questionnaire-based survey was the main instrument employed and the hypotheses developed were tested using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling. The findings show that the students’ action to exploit opportunities is significant, and is affected by the exposure to entrepreneurial learning and anticipated effect of positive emotion on entrepreneurship. This finding confirms that anticipated positive emotions are important throughout the entrepreneurial process and form a motivating factor to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Furthermore, the result shows that positive emotions partially mediate the relationship between entrepreneurship education and opportunity exploitation. This study is important for students to experience a paradigm shift towards entrepreneurship and to encourage them to select entrepreneurship as a career option. Future studies could explore the effect of anticipated negative emotions among tertiary education students, and potential entrepreneurs.

Abstract

The rate of drop outs among indigenous or Orang Asli pupils in primary school is a worrying issue. They were found to be unable to apply the knowledge acquired through formal education systems in Malaysia due to the different 'setting' of the environment. This failure was due to the lack of understanding on how Orang Asli pupils learn, think, and act. The aim of this study was to construct a Forest School framework for the teaching and learning process in Orang Asli primary schools. The qualitative study design involved in-depth interviews with six experts from the Orang Asli community by using semi-structured questions to explore and clarify related sub-constructs. The results showed five elements that need to be incorporated in the syllabus were: indigenous music, herbs and medicine, handicrafts, tools for hunting and forestry. The Forest School framework would serve as a comprehensive guide and reference for policymakers as indigenous knowledge elements need to be incorporated in primary school's syllabus to ensure life sustainability of Orang Asli in the forest. Teachers could take advantage to help Orang Asli pupils to feel more enthusiastic and motivated in processing the knowledge given in classrooms as it hits close to their environment.

Abstract

Learning styles, language learning strategies, and ethnicity are three important factors in language learning. The information about these three things is very useful for language teachers to prepare and implement effective language learning. This study was conducted to describe the students ' learning style and language learning strategy and to know the similarities/differences from the two elements of Java, Papua, Flores, Dayak, and Batak ethnics. A number of 175 participants were involved in the study. Research data were obtained through the Fleming's learning VARK questionnaire and a language learning strategy questionnaire from Oxford. The results of the two questionnaires were analyzed to determine the type of learning style and language learning strategy. The first finding suggests that the main learning styles of students from the five ethnics are variants [aural] and [kinesthetic] including variations in bimodal, and trimodal. The second finding shows that the major language learning strategy is metacognitive and affective. The third finding reveals some similarities and unique differences in their learning style and learning strategy.
