Abstract

Rural women in Indonesia face a paradox: they produce 50% of the food but earn only 10% of the agricultural income. This study explores how traditional food processing knowledge can serve as economic capital for women within an Islamic values framework. Through Participatory Action Research with 25 women sapodilla processors in Brondong Subdistrict, Lamongan Regency, East Java (March 2023-February 2024), we documented real economic transformation. Applying the Harvard Gender Analysis Framework, results show a 212% increase in monthly income (from IDR 285,000 to IDR 890,000, p<0.001), 76% increase in decision-making autonomy, and a reduction in middleman dependency 85% to 33%. Findings confirm that recognition and monetization of women’s traditional knowledge, aligned with Islamic principles of kasb (work earnings), offer sustainable pathways for economic empowerment in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the low allocation of budgets for women’s empowerment at the village level, which reflects the weak implementation of gender-responsive budgeting in Indonesia. The study focuses on Kubu Raya and Mempawah Regencies in West Kalimantan Province, which were selected because they have adopted performance-based fiscal incentive policies through the Ecology Fiscal Transfer (EFT) scheme. Using a qualitative approach with the Gender Analysis Pathway (GAP), this study analyzes how these policies affect women’s access, control, and benefits in village budget management. Data were obtained from policy documents, village financial reports, and technical assistance results from local governments. The research findings indicate that fiscal incentives encourage increased budget allocations for women’s empowerment and strengthen women’s substantive participation in development planning. However, their effectiveness depends heavily on village institutional capacity and structural support from local governments. This study recommends strengthening the integration of GAP into village planning and budgeting to promote more gender-responsive policy reforms.

Abstract

Traditional images still dominate the representation of masculinity as a product of patriarchal ideology. This research examines the representation of masculinity among Generation Z in Bangka Island, exploring whether shifts occur or traditional norms persist. Using a social representation approach, the study investigated 178 Gen Z males through open questionnaires and interviews. They are called Bujang, which anchors for social representation of masculinity. Thematic analysis found that, in Gen Z’s perspective, masculinity focuses on Jadi Urang (being true men), and requires three dimensions: prosperity, sociability, and religiosity. Some norms of masculinity have changed, while others still adopt traditional masculinities in certain social configurations. In production relations, representation shows urang bujang ya begawi (men must work). In power relations, urang bujang belajer tanggungjawab (men have responsibility). In emotional relationships, kelaki jangen nanges (men don’t cry). These themes indicate both shifting and persistent elements of traditional masculinity norms.

Abstract

Culture is the result of the construction of society through ideas and norms, which are reciprocal with public social life. Plural community life certainly creates its own challenges because it is vulnerable to conflict. This paper’s aim is to determine the differences in gender roles in Reog art and the valuescontained in. Gender differences in their identities and roles both naturally and as result of social construction often arise conflicts within them. One feels as a passive and subordinating, while other as an active and dominating. This dichotomy of roles, traits, and positions between men and women born by the concept of gender causes its own stereotypes, so that misunderstandings and conflicts arise between one and another. The art of Reog Ponorogo essentially internalizes the values of peace as an effort to cultivate spirit of peace and mutual tolerance. The value of peace education is displayed through understanding diversity of men and womens’ identities and roles.

Abstract

Violence against women in public spaces remains prevalent and is at times perpetrated by religious figures, including female preachers. This article investigates how symbolic violence against women is reproduced in sermons delivered by Islamic teachers (ustadz) through mass media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. The study is based on an analysis of sermons by both male and female ustadz who demonstrate a tendency to reinforce gender-based violence. Data were purposively collected from social media sources, particularly on sermons by Ustadz Khalid Basalamah, Oki Setiana Dewi, and Mamah Dedeh. Employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts of symbolic violence and masculine domination, the analysis explores discourses on household dynamics, including spousal obedience, gendered public and domestic roles, and the contested practice of polygamy. The findings indicate a persistent lack of gender sensitivity in these religious discourses, which contributes to the perpetuation of symbolic violence. This subtle form of violence is normalised through mechanisms such as euphemism and implicit censorship, allowing narratives that undermine women’s rights and potential to gain acceptance. The root of this issue lies in the speakers’ inadequate gender awareness and limited interpretative engagement with religious knowledge.

Abstract

The study of literacy always becomes the main issue in education, because this skill is a benchmark for the progress and development of a nation. Indonesia is a large country with a large area, however with its wide area it turns out to be an obstacle in terms of equalizing education in Indonesia. In fact, some rural villages have not had adequate access to education and it causes the paradigm about education among rural villages is less open.  Moreover, Indonesia is a country which majority of the population are Muslims, so the literacy skills improvement program which is being pursued should have an Islamic value. . Unfortunately, there have not been many reviews about increasing literacy skills based on Islamic education. Therefore, it needs an effort that can develop literacy skills for children especially for the nation's next generation. The fostering of villages youth organizations through the Islamic Reading Center (IRC) which aims to increase children's literacy is a literacy collaborative (LC) program starting from rural villages’ level, local government and central government which involves youth organization from the rural villages’ level, sub-district, regency, education and culture agency, social agency, regional and national libraries, and the directorate general of Islamic education of religious ministry of Republic of Indonesia. The Islamic reading center provides Islamic books and media that can be managed by the youth organizations in a rural village. So, through Islamic reading centers and literacy activities, it can increase literacy skills in rural villages which need more attention in education.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the application of Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah’s emancipatory pedagogy in contemporary Islamic education, with a focus on gender-inclusive educational models implemented in Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and Madrasah (Islamic schools) in Indonesia. The primary research question explores how the pedagogical principles exemplified by Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah, such as dialogical teaching, intellectual courage, and constructive critique of religious text interpretations, are integrated into modern Islamic educational practices. Employing a qualitative, field-based methodology, data was collected through in-depth interviews with educators and students, classroom observations, and an analysis of relevant curriculum documents implemented in Pesantren and Madrasah. The findings reveal that while Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah’s legacy provides a powerful model for promoting gender justice within Islamic education, its application faces various challenges, including resistance from some conservative educational structures. This research asserts that Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah’s pedagogical model offers a feasible framework for reforming Islamic education, providing a path towards gender equity and intellectual liberation, while promoting critical thinking within Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This paper describes human trafficking according to the Islamic and feminist approaches and efforts to prevent it in Indonesia. Human trafficking is an organized crime, latent and hidden, so it is difficult to overcome. Based on data from the United Nations (UN), cases of trafficking in Indonesia continue to increase. The victims are women and minors. This article aims to explain human trafficking by examining Islamic texts and feminism and its prevention efforts in Indonesia using descriptive-analytical research methods. The collected data is then analyzed using Islamic and feminist approaches. The findings show that both approaches emphasize that human trafficking is a crime against humanity. It destroys and robs freedom and humanity. So, the act of trafficking is tyranny and unlawful because it is contrary to the mission of Quranic and prophetic teachings. Besides, the feminist approach argues that prostitution, human trafficking, and sex trafficking must be stopped and assumes that the elimination of prostitution will end the need for sex trafficking and that the promotion of gender equality can more generally take place. Crucial to prevention is not only protecting and empowering people who are victims of trafficking but also considering the implications of how the trafficking victims are forced to become productive subjects. Considering that this trafficking crime has been organized across countries, the prevention efforts need to be carried out comprehensively by involving various government, private, and NGO sectors, international agencies, community organizations, and the mass media. Equally important is the role of religion in involving non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community organizations.

Abstract

Sex since the beginning of the day is now no better in civilization. Not only that, human life cannot be avoided by sex and sexuality. Even so, high-quality sex and sexuality itself have different interpretations in every hour of culture. Some say that sex is taboo and not worthy of discussion in the general public, some who view sex as a fundamental part of humans. This can be seen through how the State has intervened in matters of the body, especially sexuality. Likewise with women who work as SPG who have never been separated from sex and sexuality. Their sex lives are always in the spotlight for the public, moreover, they are not like other women who crave life in a marriage institution as their life's purpose in curbing their sexuality. This article attempts to show; What is the meaning of the sexuality discourse depicted in the beautiful novel of The Curse of Beauty by Hanaco? How beautiful is Hanaco interpreting the concept of sexuality through a sexuality discourse built on the novel The Curse of Beauty? And what are the thoughts of the author on the sexuality discourse formed as sexual control through the marriage discourse of women who work as Sales Promotion Girl (SPG) represented in the novel The Curse of Beauty? The research is focused on analyzing the representation of the sexuality of SPG in the novel “The Curse of Beauty”. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. Data are taken from all descriptive concerning SPG body appearance to understand the narrative meaning of the body. It applies Foucault’s discourse theory.
