Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Akidah Akhlak teachers as motivators in developing students’ Islamic personalities at State Madrasah Aliyah 1 in Jambi City, with a focus on the motivational strategies teachers employ in guiding students to face the challenges of social media use in the digital age. This study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive research design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation from one Akidah Akhlak teacher as the primary informant, as well as one school principal, one Guidance and Counseling (BK) teacher, one homeroom teacher, and four students as supporting informants, all selected purposively at State Senior High School 1, Jambi City. The research was conducted from May 18 to June 18, 2026. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results of the study indicate that Akidah Akhlak teachers serve as motivators by providing advice, setting a good example, fostering Islamic behavior, offering spiritual guidance, and providing guidance on the wise use of social media. The strategies implemented included fostering the habit of greeting others, promoting study discipline, enforcing classroom rules, character development, and presenting examples of inspirational figures. These roles led to increased enthusiasm for learning, improved discipline, a more religious attitude, and better social behavior among students. This study implies that the successful development of students’ Islamic personalities requires the active role of teachers as motivators, supported by cooperation among schools, families, and the community. A limitation of this study is its scope, which was confined to a single madrasah; therefore, the findings cannot yet be generalized to all Islamic educational institutions. This study offers novelty because it specifically examines the role of Akidah Akhlak teachers as motivators in developing students’ Islamic personalities in the digital age, while considering the influence of social media on student behavior. The research findings are expected to serve as a reference for teachers, schools, and future researchers in developing Islamic character education strategies relevant to contemporary developments.

Abstract

This study empirically examines whether operational risk mediates the relationship between optimal capital structure and profitability in Islamic banking across OIC countries, comparing two competing operationalizations of the leverage target: a bank-specific historical benchmark (Moving Average Leverage Ratio) and an industry benchmark (Industry Median Leverage Ratio). This study uses a quantitative approach with panel-data analysis and purposive sampling of 60 Islamic banks in 10 OIC countries over 2018–2024; removing 43 outlier observations from 420 yields an unbalanced panel of N = 377. Optimal capital structure is measured by the two leverage proxies; operational risk by the ratio of operational risk-weighted assets (ORWA) to total risk-weighted assets (RWA); and profitability by return on assets (ROA). Random Effects panel regression is estimated; although the Hausman test favored Fixed Effects, Random Effects was retained because the industry-median proxy and the institutional controls are (quasi) time-invariant and would be absorbed by Fixed Effects. Mediation is assessed with the Sobel test complemented by cluster-bootstrap confidence intervals, alongside Fixed-Effects and separate-controls robustness checks.  Only one structural result is robust: Industry Median Leverage significantly reduces operational risk (β = −0.1928; p = 0.0001), whereas Moving Average Leverage is not significant. The direct effect of capital structure on profitability is not supported once institutional controls are included, operational risk is not significantly related to profitability, and operational risk does not mediate the capital structure–profitability relationship (all indirect-effect confidence intervals contain zero). Control of corruption is consistently and positively associated with profitability. For managers, the industry-median leverage benchmark can serve as a discipline device for operational risk, not as a proven lever of profitability. For regulators, the results highlight the relevance of institutional quality particularly corruption control for Islamic-bank profitability in cross-country settings. Retaining Random Effects against the Hausman indication, and the regulatory (ORWA/RWA) nature of the operational-risk proxy, are limitations. The contribution is empirical and methodological: the study contrasts two distinct meanings of “optimal” leverage within a single mediation framework, tests operational risk as an explicit mediating channel on a cross-country OIC Islamic-banking panel, and documents a suppression effect of control of corruption on the leverage–profitability association.

Abstract

Although studies on talaqqi, tahfiz, and Qur’anic learning have expanded considerably, limited attention has been given to explaining nagham learning through an integrated perspective of behaviorism, constructivism, and social learning. This study aims to examine the nagham learning practices at Al-Ittifaqiah Indralaya Islamic Boarding School and to develop a conceptual framework that explains the pedagogical processes underlying students’ tilawah development. This study employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving five nagham teachers, fifteen students, two pesantren administrators, and three alumni qari. The data were analyzed thematically through coding, categorization, and theme development in accordance with the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). The findings indicate that nagham learning is organized through six interconnected stages: talaqqi and musyafahah, sima’i, drill, modeling, reflection, and evaluation. These stages support the development of maqamat mastery, aesthetic-spiritual sensitivity (dzauq), and tilawah performance. The learning process reflects the complementary roles of behavioral reinforcement, active knowledge construction, and observational learning within the pesantren environment, where students gradually develop Qur’anic recitation skills through sustained participation in learning activities. This study provides an integrative perspective for understanding nagham learning in Islamic boarding schools by relating traditional instructional practices to contemporary learning theories. However, the findings are derived from a single pesantren, without comparison with other institutions, are based on interpretive qualitative analysis, and do not directly measure students’ tilawah competence. Therefore, the findings should be interpreted within these contextual limitations. This study offers a conceptual framework for interpreting nagham learning as an integrated pedagogical and spiritual process that combines modeling, habituation, reflective learning, and knowledge construction. Unlike previous studies that primarily emphasize talaqqi, tahsin, maqamat mastery, or tilawah performance, the proposed framework explains how these learning processes interact through complementary learning theories within the pesantren context, thereby contributing to discussions on Islamic pedagogy and Qur’anic learning.

Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model and to determine the increase in creativity among fourth-grade students at SDN 189/VI Pinang Merah, Merangin Regency, involving 23 students in the Arts, Culture, and Crafts (SBdP) subject. This study was motivated by the low level of student creativity, as evidenced by their limited ability to develop ideas, produce original works, and their low level of engagement in the learning process. This study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted over two cycles. The research subjects consisted of 23 fourth-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, documentation, and a student creativity questionnaire. Creativity was measured based on four indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and idea development. The study’s success was defined as students’ creativity levels reaching ≥80%. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods in each learning cycle. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model was followed by a gradual increase in student creativity. In the pre-cycle stage, student creativity reached 54.25%, falling into the “less creative” category. After implementing PjBL in Cycle I, student creativity increased to 65.26%, falling into the “moderately creative” category. In Cycle II, student creativity reached 85.76% and met the study’s success indicators. This improvement was evident in the aspects of idea fluency, flexibility of thinking, originality, and the ability to develop creative works. The results indicate that the implementation of PjBL has the potential to support the development of student creativity in SBdP learning within the context of this study. However, this study was limited to a single class of 23 students, conducted over two action cycles, and did not include a control group; therefore, the findings cannot yet be widely generalized. The novelty of this study lies in its description of the implementation of Project-Based Learning in Arts, Culture, and Crafts (SBdP) instruction through Classroom Action Research at an elementary school located in a rural area with limited learning resources. These findings provide a contextual overview of the application of PjBL in supporting the development of student creativity and can serve as a reference for teachers in designing lessons that are more creative, innovative, and suited to the characteristics of rural elementary schools.

Abstract

This study examines the fulfillment of the sexual needs of married prisoners through an integrative framework combining Human Rights principles and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah. Using Class IIA Palu Penitentiary as a case study, it analyzes the legal, institutional, and socio-cultural factors contributing to the absence of policies regulating the maintenance of lawful marital relationships within the Indonesian correctional system. This research employed a qualitative socio-legal approach. Empirical data were collected through in-depth interviews with married prisoners and correctional officers, field observations, and analysis of relevant legal documents and correctional regulations. The empirical findings were integrated with normative legal analysis based on Human Rights principles and the maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah framework. The study reveals that neither Indonesian correctional regulations nor Class IIA Palu Penitentiary provides explicit legal or institutional mechanisms for fulfilling the sexual needs of married prisoners. This regulatory gap is shaped by the absence of specific legal provisions, institutional constraints, security considerations, and prevailing socio-cultural perspectives. The findings further demonstrate that maintaining lawful marital relationships contributes to protecting human dignity, preserving family integrity, and supporting prisoners' psychological well-being, provided that any future policy is implemented proportionately and remains consistent with correctional objectives, institutional security, and applicable legal principles. This study is limited to a single correctional institution; therefore, its findings cannot be generalized to all Indonesian prisons. Nevertheless, it provides a conceptual foundation for developing correctional policies that accommodate family relationship maintenance while balancing prisoners' fundamental rights, rehabilitation, institutional security, and public interests. This study contributes to the literature by integrating Human Rights principles and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah within a socio-legal framework to examine the fulfillment of married prisoners' sexual needs in Indonesia. It proposes an Integrated Family Relationship Maintenance Framework to strengthen family preservation, human dignity, and rehabilitation within the Indonesian correctional system.

Abstract

This study aims to map the process of converting religious language from a spiritual use value into an electoral political exchange value during the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election (Pilkada DKI Jakarta). Additionally, it elucidates its ideological function in producing symbolic domination, a mechanism that remains systematically unexplained in previous literature. This study employs a qualitative design situated within the critical paradigm, adhering to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). The material object consists of a corpus of public texts from August 2016 to April 2017, selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis utilizes a three-stage progressive ideology critique technique without statistical testing, aided by deductive coding that synthesizes the theoretical frameworks of Mosco, Marx, Gramsci, and Bourdieu. The findings reveal a transfiguration of Surah Al-Mā’idah 51 into a political commodity with high exchange value. Through the Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) Religious Stance document and the judicial ratification of the “religious blasphemer” label, symbolic power was constructed binarily. Operating recursively via social media algorithms and the mobilization of the 212 Action, this process successfully produced a pseudo-consciousness among voters, naturalized elite agendas into cultural hegemony, and triggered cyber polarization as well as an electoral domino effect in Banten with a narrow defeat margin of 1.9%. The primary limitation of this study is its exclusive focus on manifest texts within the public sphere, thereby excluding quantitative social media data, empirical audience reception data, or direct interviews to confirm the internal motives of the political and religious actors. The novelty of this article lies in its integrative formulation of the Ideological Commodification of Religious Language Model as a new critical diagnostic tool to dissect religious populism in post-authoritarian democracies. Future research can test the transferability of this conceptual model across other local and national electoral contests.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the SAMADATA and SEHATI programs in fostering polite and religious character among students at SDIT Sahabat Al-Qur’an Dompu and to explore how local wisdom and religious habituation are integrated within the school’s character education practices. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving school stakeholders and program-related activities. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation techniques to enhance data credibility. The findings indicate that the SAMADATA program contributes to the cultivation of polite character through the integration of Dompu local wisdom, particularly the expressions santabe, mada, ita, and iyota, into daily school interactions and learning activities. The study also suggests that the SEHATI program supports the development of religious character through the habituation of ritual and social worship practices conducted at school and reinforced through parental involvement at home. The internalization process appears to involve cognitive understanding, affective engagement, and behavioral practice, although the extent of its influence may vary among students. This study was conducted in a single Islamic elementary school and relied on qualitative evidence derived from interviews, observations, and documentation. Therefore, the findings are context-specific and cannot be generalized to other educational settings. Future studies are recommended to involve multiple schools, a broader range of participants, and mixed-method approaches to examine character development more comprehensively and to validate the applicability of the identified practices in different contexts. This study contributes to the literature on Islamic character education by highlighting the integration of local cultural values and religious habituation within a school-based character education framework. It offers a contextual perspective on how Dompu local wisdom and Islamic practices can be incorporated into everyday school culture to support the development of polite and religious character among elementary school students.

Abstract

This study examines prophetic leadership strategies of school principals in improving graduate quality in Islamic elementary schools, addressing the limited empirical studies that explain how prophetic values are operationalized within school leadership practices and their contribution to educational outcomes. The study aims to develop a conceptual understanding of the relationship between prophetic leadership and graduate quality improvement. A qualitative approach with a multi-case study design was employed in SDIT Al-Ittihad Sukabumi and SD Aisyiyah Islamic Center Cianjur. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving principals, teachers, education staff, foundation administrators, school committees, and parents. Data analysis followed data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and cross-case analysis, with validity ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that both principals integrate the prophetic values of Siddiq, Amanah, Tabligh, and Fathanah into school management, although through different approaches. SDIT Al-Ittihad Sukabumi emphasizes participatory leadership, exemplary conduct, and religious culture, while SD Aisyiyah Islamic Center Cianjur adopts data-driven governance, structured communication, and instructional innovation. In both schools, prophetic values strengthen organizational culture, teacher professionalism, stakeholder collaboration, and learning quality, contributing to graduates with academic competence, Islamic character, and 21st-century skills. The study offers a practical framework for translating prophetic values into leadership practices, governance systems, and teacher development programs. The model may support principal development and quality assurance processes in Islamic schools. As the study is limited to two schools, the findings should be interpreted within their specific contexts. This study proposes a conceptual model of prophetic leadership strategy that links prophetic values, leadership practices, organizational culture, and graduate quality, contributing to the development of Islamic educational leadership theory and offering practical insights for school leadership improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and map the strategic decision-making sequences of online fashion MSMEs in Pekalongan through the lens of Islamic managerial economics. It specifically investigates how Islamic ethical constraints, such as the avoidance of gharar (uncertainty) and the pursuit of Siddiq (honesty), reconfigure the cognitive process of choosing between digital platforms and marketing techniques. Following an interpretivist paradigm, this research employed a qualitative multiple-case study design using three distinct cases: a traditional batik artisan, a work trousers manufacturer, and a contemporary jeans retailer. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using a "stated preference" elicitation technique and triangulated via direct digital observation of the participants' online storefronts. The results identify three distinct decision-tree patterns: lexicographic, nested, and co-lexicographic. The findings suggest and illustrate a concept of sharia-bounded rationality, where for the observed Muslim entrepreneurs, digital choices appear to be governed by ethical parameters such as ensuring transaction transparency and rejecting usurious financial mechanisms (riba) act as the primary filters for commercial viability rather than mere profit maximization. While providing deep contextual insights into the Pekalongan fashion cluster, the findings are limited by their qualitative nature and specific regional focus, which may restrict statistical generalizability to larger industrial contexts. This research offers a novel synthesis of Hsu and Reid’s two-stage decision model with Islamic managerial principles, providing a culturally resonant framework for understanding digital transformation in Muslim-majority regions.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between social media use, Islamic digital literacy, and multicultural Islamic education from the perspective of students at Islamic higher education institutions (PTAI) in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving 24 students (purposive sampling) from four purposively selected PTAI representing institutional diversity. Thematic saturation was continuously monitored and reached after the 20th interview, confirmed by 4 additional interviews yielding no new themes. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) interactive model, with source and method triangulation to ensure credibility. The study adhered to the SRQR (Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research) guidelines. Students demonstrated high technical digital skills but low critical literacy, particularly in evaluating religious content online. Social media simultaneously broadened multicultural awareness and intensified perceived religious exclusivism through students’ reported experiences of algorithmic echo chamber effects. Digital content significantly shaped students’ perceived tolerance attitudes. None of the four campuses had developed systematic institutional strategies for fostering digital religious moderation. The study is limited to four campuses in North Sumatra, which restricts the generalizability of findings to other regional and institutional contexts. The qualitative cross-sectional design does not allow for causal claims regarding attitudinal change over time. Practically, this study offers concrete implications for Islamic higher education institutions: curriculum reform through formal integration of Islamic digital literacy courses guided by the IDLT framework; development of digital religious moderation programs at the institutional level; investment in TPACK-based lecturer training for Islamic digital pedagogy; and structured programs to develop students’ critical digital literacy competencies. Future research employing mixed methods with a broader national sample is strongly recommended, as is quantitative validation of the IDLT framework across diverse PTAI contexts.  This study makes an original contribution by integrating Islamic digital literacy, multicultural education, and religious moderation within the PTAI context of North Sumatra. It proposes the Islamic Digital Literacy Triad (IDLT) as a conceptual framework for PTAI curriculum development, building upon existing digital literacy models by explicitly integrating Islamic ethical principles (tabayyun, wasathiyyah) and multicultural awareness as inseparable dimensions of digital competence within the Islamic higher education context.
