Abstract

The increasing prevalence of the overuse of social media among adolescents has raised concerns. Educators worry that it may decrease the cognitive functioning of these adolescents. This study of 245 secondary-school students in Palu, Indonesia, reveals that there is a correlation between these students’ diminished perceived attention and the intensity of their internet and social media use. Due to their eagerness to multitask, students who check their social media notifications while doing their online learning experience perceived attention discontinuity. This study suggests the significance of prevention and intervention for adolescents’ media-related problems as they multitask in their online learning environments.

Abstract

This study aims to explore lecturers’ perceptions and practices of humor usage in EFL classrooms. This qualitative study used questionnaires and interview protocols to get data from two senior English lecturers who use humor in their classrooms at an English department of a public university in Indonesia. The result reveals that humor, particularly jokes and spontaneous humor are practical and beneficial for learning English in higher education. However, in delivering humor, the lecturers should consider the setting (time and place), college students’ vocabulary level, age, and sex; humor should not offend them culturally and be understandable.

Abstract

Critical writing needs to be taught to junior high school students to develop analytical skills, evaluate, and relate meaningful learning experiences. Assessment as Learning (AaL) is an assessment that students can do to reflect on the development of their knowledge independently. Aal can be used as a variation of assessment in teaching materials. Critical writing and AaL can be combined in the form of teaching materials. This study will explain how AAL and critical writing are part of the development of exposition text teaching materials for class VIII. This presentation was developed with a research development scheme by adapting the 4D development research model. Furthermore, from the research, the final result was that the application of AAL in the development of teaching materials could have a positive effect on students with a practice test score of 90% and product user trials with a score of 87%.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the quality of students' thesis in the primary school teacher education study program. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative case study. This method has three stages, namely: the description stage, the reduction stage, and the selection stage. The data in this study were sourced from 16 students graduating in 2020 and 2021 at one of the private universities in Riau. The results of this study can show that the quality of student thesis is stagnant and tends to decrease in quality. Therefore, this research can be used as a reference in improving the lecture process and the mentoring process in the next academic year.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to know the forms of the implementation of the values of silih asah (stimulating potential), silih asih (providing affection) and silih asuh (fulfilling the needs) well known as SILAS, namely the local genius values which are internalized in stakeholder activities to build school quality culture. This research used the qualitative approach from the phenomenology method. The participants were principals, teachers, staff and students of Junior High School at Purwakarta, Indonesia. The results of the study are; The value of silih asah is formed by self-capacity building through the training program and continuing studies to all teachers and staff, the students are involved actively in some academic and non-academic competitions, peer group learning, strong motivation from principal to all school citizenship to be competent and professional. The implementation of silih asih is formed by the sincerity of teachers and staff in serving the students learning needs, a harmonious relationship between the principal with teachers and staff, brotherhood and mutually protect between students, as well as the existence of a weekly program to repair the relationship between all of the school stakeholders in creating a friendly environment and social care. The value of silih asuh is formed by the student attitude, effective communication between principal with teachers and staff, teachers with staff, as well as by the principle 'right man on the right place' in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of all stakeholders professionally and proportionally. Abstract

This paper aims to explore how Madrasah EFL teachers manifest their agency in developing their professional identities. The study is a narrative inquiry involving eight EFL teachers from Madrasah around Indonesia. Data were collected through narrative frames followed by in-depth interviews to clarify blurred stories written in narrative frames. The data were analyzed and elaborated into three themes, the novices, beyond the shell: the journey to be professional teachers, and the lifelong learners. The result shows that the dynamic change enacted by Madrasah EFL teachers can be categorized into three dimensions, the iterational, the practical evaluative, and the projective dimension.

Abstract

This study aims to self-reflect the student-teacher’s (ST’s) scaffolding during her online teaching practicum practice. The self-reflective was conducted in six meetings using a Zoom Application. It utilized a thematic analysis from Braun Clarke (2006). The findings showed that the student-teacher was able to: (1) be aware of her scaffolding drawbacks and improved significantly in the next meetings, (2) improve students’ understanding, (3) conduct appropriate scaffolding learning process by utilizing various graphic organizers and media. While the student teacher was effective in using the scaffolding technique, each theme's improvement path is different. Every meeting is typically used to develop it, and it is acquired in a step-by-step manner.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a computer-based interactive Genetics project guide e-book to enhance undergraduate biology students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This development was carried out because there had been no available written guidebook for the Genetics project, which resulted in non-optimum project implementation. The content in the e-book consists of a description of material related to Drosophila melanogaster, descriptions and videos of general procedures, PjBL-based learning activities, and quizzes. Lee and Owen’s development model was used in this study which consisted of 4 stages, (1) multimedia need assessment and analysis; (2) multimedia instructional design; (3) multimedia development and implementation; and (4) multimedia evaluation. Before being implemented, the e-book was validated by material experts, learning media experts, and Genetics lecture. The effectiveness of the e-book in enhancing cognitive learning outcomes was measured using the ANCOVA test. The results of the e-book effectiveness test showed a significant difference between the control and experimental classes. These results indicate that the computer-based interactive e-book is valid, practical, and effective for use in the learning process of the Genetics project.
