Abstract

Technology provides convenience in every aspect of life. In education, technology revitalizes and supports learning by breaking barriers which inhibits learning. Pre-service teachers are a key factor in future generation education, but their ability to make use of benefits technology has to offer is scarcely explored. In this qualitative study, we surveyed 480 students currently enrolled in one of Teachers Training Institutes in Indonesia and digital literacy in every undergraduate level (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) was evaluated. Substantial evidence was found and showed that digital literacy improves with education level. Implications for pre-service teachers’ education program are addressed.

Abstract

Learning for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) must specifically cater to their specific characteristics, but learning media specifically tailored for children with ASD is unfortunately still limited. We designed and implemented interactive multimedia adopting the syntax of PECS for reading and counting in children with ASD. Students’ improvement was evaluated after learning and their behavior while learning was documented. Results showed some improvement in students' learning achievement, and all students showed an improvement in terms of behavior when learning.

Abstract

Factors contributing to learning achievement and learning strategy for supporting students in functioning academically has remained a major theme in educational research. In this article, we put forth a metacognitive learning strategy in developing students’ academic self-concept and learning achievement. Seventy-two high school students were subjected to either metacognitive learning strategy or conventional learning strategy and their academic self-concept as well as learning achievement was then evaluated after learning. Metacognitive learning strategy significantly improved students’ academic self-concept and learning achievement. Interconnection between academic self-concept and learning achievement in metacognitive learning strategy scheme was also found.

Abstract

Learning collaboratively has been proven to be beneficial in learning mathematics. Unfortunately, studies have elicited obstacles in implementing collaborative learning, such as students’ behavior when engaging in collaborative learning. We address this problem by embedding local wisdom from Bali, namely Tri Hita Karana, within a learning handbook for studying polyhedron. Successful conceptual understanding after learning mathematics with the handbook showed potential merit of the handbook to be implemented in learning mathematics and students’ behavior while doing collaborative works also showed that embedding cultural context in learning could foster students’ collaboration skills.

Abstract

Cooperative approach has been proven to be one of successful learning strategies to improve learning. We investigated team-based learning (TBL) as a means to improve students’ understanding of statistics. Samples were 40 junior high schools students in West Java. Improvement after treatment was evaluated by an individual written test. Results suggested that students learning with TBL achieved better test results than control class. Description of team dynamics and its contribution to learning achievement is discussed.

Abstract

As human undoubtedly plays a role in today’s environmental problems, human inarguably must take control in overcoming them. Therefore, understanding how we can support the students in developing the ability to make environmentally friendly decisions is an essential part of an educational program. In this article, we evaluated the state and the role of metacognitive awareness as a factor that might affect junior high schools students in making a decision concerning environmental pollution, mainly the use of plastics in their everyday life.

Abstract

Fractional exponents and root forms are one of the keys concepts in advanced mathematics courses; students’ dynamics in understanding these more complex mathematical processes consequently merits a thorough analysis. Nineteen high schools students were given a test with a series of fractional exponents and root forms related questions, with a varying degree of complexity. We then analyzed students’ answer and classified the underlying learning obstacles based on errors found in students’ answers. Several didactical and epistemological obstacles were found which indicates that learning design for these concepts needs to be improved.

Abstract

An understanding of temperature and heat concept is one of the learning objectives in the 2013 Curriculum and the complexity of these concepts requires learning tools that can help students in achieving this objective. In this article, we discussed the development of digital thermobalance and student worksheets (LKPD) as supporting tools for learning temperature and heat concepts. The evaluation results showed that digital thermobalance and LKPD developed in this study have proven to be valid, practical, and effective. Findings from this evaluation showed the potential of digital thermobalance and LKPD as a learning media for temperature and heat subject.

Abstract

PISA and TIMSS results have been used as a basis for educational reform, but unfortunately, teachers’ understanding of PISA and TIMSS tests is rarely investigated. We evaluated 149 sophomore preservice chemistry teachers’ achievement in TIMSS and PISA-like test. As a way to reflect on TIMSS and PISA results, we compared preservice chemistry teachers’ achievement to PISA and TIMSS results for Indonesia and the international students. Results suggested that, to a certain degree, preservice chemistry teachers have a better chemical literacy than Indonesian students and a somewhat similar chemical literacy with international students.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigated students’ mental model on light concept and its application in polarize glasses. 42 students of Optometry Program were used in this study, which categorized into two grups: newbie group and advance group. The data was collected through paper and pencil test using three open ended questions and descriptively analyzed. The study showed that almost all the students have understanding about light concept and image forming in the eyes, and beam rays model was most used in their depiction. Understanding about polarize concept showed better for advance group than newbie group, and most of students from both group used beam rays model too. Understanding about principle of polarized glasses showed better for newbie group than advance group.
