Abstract

Misconception is a serious problem faced by high school students. Through the application of inquiry learning model, this study tries to reduce students' misconceptions, especially on thermochemical material.  The experimental method with the pretest-posttest randomized control group design was used in this study. The samples of the research were 72 eleventh-grade high school students. The inquiry model was applied to the experimental class and the scientific approach was applied to the control class. The three-tier multiple choice with the Certainty of Response Index (CRI) was used to look at misconceptions experienced by the students. The results of the statistical calculation found that the toserved was greater than tcritical. The reduction of misconception categories and the percentage of reduction of misconceptions in the experimental class was 47.53 % in the medium category. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the inquiry learning model helped the students to overcome the misconceptions in thermochemical material. The researcher recommends that the inquiry learning model can be applied to other chemistry materials because their learning can help students find the correct concepts and reduce misconceptions.

Abstract

Teenagers’ behavior problems such as free sex, abortion, pornography, and drug abuse have increased in developing countries. The purposes of this research were to formulate the views of experts, education practitioners, and teenagers about the importance of teaching sex education (SE) in schools and to formulate the prototype of sex education, material, media, and learning strategies. This research was a descriptive research. The data was obtained through interviews to reveal experts’ views. The sources of data in this research were teachers, principals, psychologists, scholars, reproductive experts, and sociologists. The data were analyzed using content analysis. A questionnaire was used to find out the students' opinions. The population of this study was the senior high school students in Surabaya, Indonesia. The samples taken were 171 students. The data taken from the questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. The percentage was obtained from the number of respondents who chose ”Agree” and then divided by the number of ”Disagree” of each statement. The results of this research reveal that sex education is expected to provide an understanding of sexuality, the formation of responsible self-attitudes, society, and religion in overcoming sexual turmoil, as well as the skills to avoid promiscuity. Sex education should be given within an ethical and religious framework. Sex education materials include social ethics, the effects of promiscuity, abortion and its effects, and marriage. The media used were films, multimedia, and other media within the framework of Islamic ethics. This research concludes that sex education is important to students, especially high school students.

Abstract

Every student must possess problem-solving abilities. Solving students' problems is varied; several factors influence the difference between cognitive styles and learning models. This study aimed to determine differences in problem-solving abilities based on students' cognitive styles in the Concept Attention (CA) and Group Investigation (GI) learning model. This study was a quantitative study with the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 16 Semarang as the 2018/2019 academic year population. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling. The research data had been collected through documentation and tests and then were analyzed using nonparametric tests, specifically the Hildebrand test, since the data were not normally distributed. The results showed that students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style's problem-solving ability were better than students with Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style, either in general, CA, or GI learning models. The CA learning model produced better problem-solving abilities than the GI learning model, both in general and in terms of the type of students’ cognitive style.

Abstract

Mahmud Yunus’ thoughts about instructional strategies that he wrote in his book are rational and comprehensive enough to motivate students to learn. His strategies focus on fostering students’ self-confidence, independence, creativity, and courage to try to manifest themselves and to actualize themselves. This study tried to look further at how these instructional strategies were carried out in foreign language learning, such as English learning and Arabic learning. The method used in this research was literature research with data source triangulation. To collect the data and information, we used deductive thinking. A descriptive qualitative method was used to present the results of the study. The results of this study showed that the instructional strategies of Mahmud Yunus emphasized teaching patterns with a system of direct method, practical and collaborative learning. This approach is relevant in language teaching for both, beginners and intermediate levels. Therefore, educators and further research will be very good if they can apply Mahmud Yunus’ instructional strategy in language learning.

Abstract

Instrument is one of the supports of learning success. Assessment of student knowledge will encourage students to get better grades and will have an impact on increasing student knowledge. This study aims to develop the instruments of critical thinking skills and the ecosystem concept mastery. The instruments produced were an essay test adopted from Facione and a multiple-choice test adopted from Anderson & Krathwohl. This research was conducted on September 2018 - October 2019 with 37 tenth-grade students as the sample. The research method used was the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), however this research did not do the disseminate stage due to the limitation of time. The results showed that the instruments are feasible with the results of expert validation of 81.03 and 85.00 respectively. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the developed instruments could be used to measure the critical thinking skills and mastery of concepts. However, these tests must be developed further in large classes with more students.

Abstract

Environment is everything around the human being and influences the development of human life. Environmental problems have to be solved by all parties, including parents. Environmental responsibility behavior comes from an awareness of the problems that occurred. This awareness can solve the problems. The responsibility behavior of parents is the result of the interaction of various factors, one of them is a personality factor. This study aimed to recognize the correlation between personality and environmental responsibility behavior of parents. This research was conducted in SMP (Junior High School) Labschool Jakarta, SMP Labschool Kebayoran, and SMP Labschool Cibubur in the first semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. The population of the study was all parents whose children study at the mentioned Lab schools. The method used was a survey method through correlational studies. The correlation coefficient obtained was 0.961. It could be interpreted that the determination coefficient was 92.4 %. Based on the result, it could be concluded that the personality variable contributed to the parents’ environmental responsibility behavior (92.4 %) while 7.6 % was determined by other factors. The very high correlation could have an impact on a child's parenting. Parents who have a high personality will educate their children to have a high personality and environmental responsibility as well. Learning models in schools that are appropriate and contain strong Islamic values will be able to strengthen the personality of a child that has been formed by his parents at home.

Abstract

The lecturer is a profession with two different functions: a teacher and a researcher. Teaching and research activities are inseparable and reciprocal and provide great benefit for lecturers. But, doing those activities simultaneously makes a high workload for the lecturer. This research employed the job demands-resources model to investigate the link between teacher-researcher role conflict and psychological well-being. This research was carried out on 250 lecturers in East Java, coming from three big cities, Surabaya, Malang, and Jember, taken by random sampling. Structural equation modelling was used to examine the research model. The results found that the teacher-researcher role conflict has a significant negative effect on work enthusiasm. On the contrary, the teacher-researcher role conflict has a significant positive effect on emotional exhaustion. These findings provide evidence to stakeholders (Universities and The Ministry of Education and Culture) to be more concerned about the dual role that lecturers must carry out as a teacher and a researcher.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic forced many universities to apply online learning. The purpose of this study was to break down the online learning process in the early pandemic as well as effective and optimal online learning. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Interestingly, this study found online learning using the WhatsApp Group to be the most effective in the early COVID-19 pandemic. WhatsApp is easy, simple, and does not require a large data quota package. Through WhatsApp accounts, learning took place optimally because students and lecturers could communicate and share PowerPoint files, Microsoft Word files, JPGs, Voice Notes, Videos, and other learning resource links. The study recommends that other researchers uncover the solution to obstacles experienced by students in online learning and the development of other media to implement effective online lectures.
