Abstract

This study aims to know whether there is a correlation between students’ Quranic memorization and their English vocabulary retention. This study chose 28 of seventh graders at Islamic Junior High School Az-Zahra Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year as the sample by means of cluster random sampling technique. This study applied correlational research design. The documented data of Quranic memorization of learners and the English vocabulary preservation were collected from the test and then analyzed for hypothetical testing employing Pearson's Product Moment equation. The outcome of the hypothetical test shows that Sig. (value) was generated by the value of significance = 0.000 < α = 0.05. It means the acceptance of Ha and the rejection of H0. Furthermore, based on the r value interpretation table, it is known that the observed r is a high correlation as the value of observed r is 0.622 in the 0.600 – 0.800 level. It can therefore be inferred that there is a significant correlation between the Quranic memorization of learners and the acquisition of English vocabulary.

Abstract

Islamic multicultural education in formal education can be implemented since elementary school. The purpose of this article is to describe the application of multicultural education with moderate Islamic values through the learning process in elementary schools to shape the character of nationalism in Indonesia. The qualitative method was used in this study to see the phenomena that occur in the field. The data analysis used was the source and technique triangulation method. There were 8 respondents from three elementary schools, namely Sekolah Dasar Negeri 7 Kota Metro, Sekolah Dasar Negeri 4 Kota Metro, and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 1 Kota Metro. The research instruments used were interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then analyzed through inductive thinking. The development of multicultural education and moderate Islamic values in shaping the character of nationalism was done through the integration of moderate Islam by instilling tawassuth, tassamuh, tawazun, and amar ma'ruf nahimunkar attitudes by introducing the surrounding environment as a cultural plurality (contextual approach) and instilling an attitude of tolerance and able to coexist with other people. These three steps were developed by the teachers in structured lesson planning by formulating goals, setting essential material, carrying out the learning process, and carrying out attitude assessments.

Abstract

Disaster mitigation learning in elementary schools is the knowledge that must be taught considering that Indonesia is a disaster-prone region. This research was aimed to design and develop KOASE comics that are appropriate to be used to understand disaster mitigation. The research method used was the 4D (Define, Design, Develop, dan Disseminate) model. The feasibility of the product assessed by expert validators was 51.13 with a fairly feasible category. The teacher’s response at the development stage obtained the score of 92.08 with a very good category and the students’ responses obtained a score of 85.87 with a very good category. Then it can be concluded that the development of KOASE comics is appropriate to be used as a medium for disaster mitigation learning. It is suggested for the next researcher is to develop comics that are more specific to one type of natural disaster so that they can explore the depth of essential material. For the teacher, this comic can be used as a source of additional reading and learning media in teaching disaster mitigation.

Abstract

The effectiveness of written feedback in learning is a debatable topic that divides opinion. Many researchers claim that written feedback does not have a significant effect on improving students’ learning achievement. However, many other researchers indicate otherwise. This research aimed to analyze the effect of using focused written feedback (FWF) on students’ writing skills. This research sample consisted of 10 students taught through practice to write a bachelor's thesis proposal. This research employed the equivalent time-series design. Observations were employed in a four-time series. There are four models for the implementation of focused written feedback: task feedback (FT), process feedback (FP), self-regulation feedback (FR), and self-feedback (FS). Then, there are three major questions: what are the goals? (Feed-up), what progress is being made toward the goal? (Feedback), what activities need to be undertaken to make better progress? (Feed-forward). The instruments of this study were written feedback assessment guidelines, and rubrics for assessing writing skills. The researchers had checked both instruments. The result showed that students’ writing skills improved the most in the section where they received the most practice. In conclusion, this study contributed to effective written feedback and provided some implications for lectures.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the correlation between learner autonomy, digital competence, and writing achievement. It involved 92 first-year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students who were enrolled in an intensive course (IC) program of the English department of a state university in Indonesia. This study used three types of data: learner autonomy level elicited by using a questionnaire, digital competence level elicited by using a questionnaire, writing scores that were obtained from the coordinator of the IC program. The research methodology used in this study was quantitative research. The bivariate Spearman correlation was applied to know the correlations between learner autonomy and writing achievement and the correlation between digital competence and writing achievement. The multiple linear regression was computed to examine the correlation of the combination of learner autonomy and digital competence towards writing achievement. The results of the study confirmed that learner autonomy was strongly correlated with writing achievement and digital competence was moderately correlated with writing achievement. The result also showed that there is a statistically significant correlation between a combination of learner autonomy and digital competence towards writing achievement. Therefore, pedagogically, teachers of EFL writing are suggested to promote autonomous learning and at the same time, use technology to foster EFL students' writing achievement.
