Abstract

Cold War literary studies remain dominated by Western perspectives, particularly narratives from the United States and the Soviet Union, resulting in the marginalization of literary experiences and criticism from Third World countries. Indonesian literary works that represent America as an object of critique have seldom been read as integral to global Cold War literary discourse. This research aims to uncover and explain criticisms of the United States in Umar Kayam's short story collection Seribu Kunang-Kunang di Manhattan within the context of Cold War Literature, using Indonesia’s perspective as part of the Third World. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach within a postcolonial framework, combining the concept of Occidentalism with an intersectional analysis of race, class, and gender. The analytical method used is a wide, close, and deep reading approach that integrates textual analysis and historical documents. The research data include primary textual units from short stories, as well as secondary data, including historical, and relevant academic literature. The results show that Kayam delivers an ideological critique of America by portraying it as a dark and ambiguous space, with a working-class society that is vulnerable and apolitical, and patriarchal gender relations, thereby dismantling the myth of America as a symbol of progress and universal freedom. This research concludes that Indonesian literature serves as a legitimate medium for cultural and ideological critique of Western hegemony, while also affirming Indonesia’s active position in global Cold War literary discourse.

Abstract

Indonesian language learning in junior high schools still faces a fundamental problem in the form of a disconnect between the teaching material and the socio-cultural realities of students. Students often view language only as a formal communication tool, not a means of character building and cultural meaning. This study aims to identify the educational values of the Nadran tradition and explore the possibility of integrating them into local wisdom-based Indonesian language learning. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 15 scientific articles obtained through Google Scholar, Garuda, and DOAJ databases, supplemented by interview data, observations, and field documentation in the coastal areas of Cirebon and Indramayu. Analysis was carried out through thematic classification to identify the Nadran tradition's central values relevant to the educational context. The results show that Nadran contains four central educational values, namely religiosity, cooperation, cultural symbolism, and ecological awareness, which are highly relevant to be developed in text-based Indonesian language learning. Integrating these values has been proven to increase learning motivation, literacy understanding, and strengthen students' character. This study concludes that the Nadran tradition is a cultural heritage and a strategic pedagogical potential to realize Indonesian language learning that is contextual, humanistic, and rooted in the nation's cultural values.

Abstract

The ability to write inspirational stories constitutes an essential aspect of the pedagogical competence of prospective Indonesian language teachers. However, empirical evidence indicates that this type of narrative writing has not received sufficient attention within teacher education curricula, resulting in various internal and external challenges. This study aims to provide an in-depth needs analysis by examining the barriers, opportunities, challenges, and instructional model development encountered by prospective Indonesian language teachers in writing inspirational stories. Employing a qualitative descriptive-narrative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving students of an Indonesian Language Education program at a public university in Indonesia. The findings reveal that the primary barriers stem from low self-efficacy, limited philosophical understanding of the concept of “inspirational,” and insufficient engagement in reflective writing practices during their academic training. Meanwhile, opportunities emerge through experience-based training, creative mentoring, and the implementation of storytelling practices in authentic contexts. The major challenge lies in the misalignment between professional practice demands and curriculum design, which tends to prioritize academic aspects over practical competencies. Therefore, the development of an instructional model for teaching writing is necessary to produce high-quality and meaningful texts. The study concludes that the most significant challenge is not merely technical, but rather rooted in prospective teachers’ limited conceptual understanding of the educational function of narratives. This study contributes theoretically to the development of a narrative framework in teacher education and offers practical implications through the integration of storytelling into the curriculum and training programs for prospective Indonesian language teachers.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding language as a medium for shaping social values and cultural identity in the Bastem community, South Sulawesi. The Rampanan Kapa' traditional wedding ceremony is not only a ritual for uniting two families, but also an arena for symbolic communication imbued with values of politeness, spirituality, and social solidarity. The main problem of this research is the form, meaning, and function of the speech acts used in each stage of the ceremony, and how these utterances reflect local cultural values and the politeness system of the Bastem community. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnopragmatic approach, which connects the analysis of linguistic forms with the sociocultural context. Data were obtained through direct observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and recording of speech acts used during the traditional procession. The results show four main types of speech acts—representative, expressive, directive, and declarative—that function to regulate social relations, affirm customary norms, and mark the social legitimacy of the marriage. Customary speech also serves as a means of transmitting moral values such as deliberation, politeness, and respect for ancestors. The research conclusion confirms that the Bastem traditional language is not just a means of communication, but rather a social and spiritual mechanism that connects humans with their communities and cultures, as well as being a means of preserving the collective identity of local communities.

Abstract

Digital transformation in Education has brought significant implications to Indonesian learning practices, but still leaves complex conceptual, technological, and pedagogical challenges. This research aims to systematically explore the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of digital-based Indonesian learning, as well as evaluate the impact of digital platforms on motivation, language skills, and the effectiveness of learning tools. This study uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with a qualitative thematic synthesis, based on 10 selected articles published between 2020 and 2025. The literature selection process follows the PRISMA 2020 flow, and data analysis involves manually extracting key findings from each study. The results of the study show that the main challenges include low teacher digital literacy, a lack of integration of technology pedagogy, student unpreparedness in independent learning, and limited digital access and inclusivity. On the other hand, opportunities include using technologies such as virtual reality, gamification, machine learning, and interactive media to increase motivation and learning engagement. This study concludes that digital Indonesian learning requires a multidimensional theory-based approach to create an adaptive, inclusive, and transformative learning system.

Abstract

Poetry as a literary work functions not only as an aesthetic expression, but also as a medium for conveying cultural values and education. However, in academic practice and literary studies, poetry is often understood solely in linguistic terms, leaving its didactic and cultural functions unexplored. This study aims to describe in depth the form, meaning, and function of didactic poetry in preserving cultural heritage, as presented in the anthology "Lamentations of the Sawu Sea" by poets from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-narrative method. The research data consists of poetry texts in the anthology "Lamentations of the Sawu Sea", which are strengthened by data from interviews, observations, and documentation related to the use of poetry in educational and cultural contexts. Data collection was conducted through reading and note-taking, while data analysis employed an interactive model that included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study indicate that the poems in the anthology are didactic, employing symbols, imagery, and narratives of collective experiences that convey religious values, ecological wisdom, traditional traditions, local food, and love for one's hometown. The didactic poetry in this anthology serves as a means of cultural preservation, working on aesthetic, cultural, and pedagogical levels. The research concludes that "Lamentations of the Sawu Sea" makes a significant contribution to cultural education and to strengthening the local identity of the NTT community through literature.

Abstract

The weakening of the internalization of character education values in modern society indicates a gap between educational goals and social realities, particularly with respect to parents, social responsibility, and moral awareness. Amid these challenges, folklore as local wisdom has strategic potential to strengthen character formation while functioning as a mechanism of social control. This study aims to identify and describe the character-education values in the Malin Kundang folktale and to analyze its role as an instrument of social control, using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from the folktale text and millennial informants (aged 18–35) through a limited literature study and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using an interactive technique. The findings showed that the Malin Kundang story contained values such as respect for parents, honesty, humility, responsibility, loyalty to identity, and social awareness, which were integrated into a cause-and-effect narrative structure that effectively shaped moral awareness. In addition, the story functioned as a preventive cultural social control mechanism through symbolic moral consequences, such as the curse turning Malin Kundang into stone. Millennials still interpreted the story as a source of life reflection, particularly regarding respect, self-control, and responsibility, indicating that the folktale remains relevant as a medium for character education and social control in contemporary society.

Abstract

Studies on Sufi poetry indicate that symbolism functions not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a medium of complex spiritual experience. However, previous research often separates religious symbols from existential imagery, resulting in fragmented interpretations of meaning. This study aims to analyze the symbols of the Beloved and the sea in the poetry of Ahmadun Yosi Herfanda using a Sufi symbolic approach. This research employs a qualitative method of textual analysis grounded in Vladimir Braginsky's symbolic-Sufi framework. The data consist of selected poems analyzed through symbol identification, interpretation of meaning, and their relation to Sufi concepts. The findings reveal that the Beloved's symbol represents the ultimate goal of union with the Divine. At the same time, the sea symbolizes the spiritual journey characterized by longing, trials, and alienation. Both symbols are integrated into a unified mystical structure connecting journey and union. The study concludes that mystical experience in Ahmadun Yosi Herfanda’s poetry is integrative and multidimensional. Its scholarly contribution lies in developing a Sufi symbolic reading that combines relational (Beloved) and processual (sea) dimensions within a systematic analytical framework.

Abstract

The decline in politeness in educational institutions indicates a shift in social values in students' communication practices, which are increasingly permissive of using offensive language as a form of self-expression or a symbol of group solidarity. This study aims to explore in depth the forms, causal factors, and efforts to revitalize politeness in secondary schools, highlighting the emergence of swearing and teasing as forms of verbal bullying that signal a decline in communication ethics. Using a qualitative-interpretive approach, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of students, teachers, and school administrators in several junior high schools in Waru District, Pamekasan. Analysis was conducted using the Dell Hymes SPEAKING model to explore the contextual dimensions of politeness and impoliteness. The results show that the decline in politeness is influenced by internal factors such as peer pressure, lack of habituation to polite language, and weak teacher role models. In contrast, external factors include social media influence, digital culture, and minimal family supervision. Revitalization efforts are carried out through polite speaking training, debate, language drama activities, and the integration of politeness values into all school activities. This research confirms that politeness decadence is not merely a linguistic issue but a sociocultural phenomenon that demands systematic and sustainable character education intervention to build a culture of polite communication in educational environments.
