Abstract

Background:  Running has become one of the most popular sports for people of all ages. The presence of exciting running events and races has further boosted the sport’s popularity. However, enthusiasm for participating in running races is not always accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, adequate sleep, effective stress management, and balanced nutritional intake. Aims: This study aims to determine the factors influencing the BMI of the running community in Semarang City. Methods: The research employed a quantitative, cross-sectional design. The population consisted of members of the Semarang Runners community aged 18–24 years. A total of 71 respondents were selected using a total sampling method. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), 24-hour food recall, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and BMI measurements. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test to assess correlations. Results: The results indicated that, based on the chi-square test, physical activity, sleep quality, stress, and achievement were not significantly associated with BMI, as their p-values were greater than 0.05. However, among dietary pattern variables—including energy, protein, fat, and fiber intake—only energy intake showed a significant association with BMI, with a p-value of 0.005. Conclusion: The study suggests that members of the Semarang Runners community should focus on managing their energy intake to support and improve their health. While other factors such as physical activity and sleep quality also contribute to overall fitness, energy intake appears to be a key determinant of BMI in this population.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of mental health problems among adolescents is increasing. One way to improve mental health and help relieve stress is through memorizing the Quran. Objective: To determine the relationship between Quran memorization activities and other factors on adolescents’ mental health at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Negeri 42 Jakarta in 2024. Methods: This quantitative research uses a cross-sectional design. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a sample of 107 respondents selected through proportional random sampling. Results: Students who experienced mental health problems, as assessed by the SDQ 20 questionnaire screening for ages 11-18 years, showed that 55.1% were in the abnormal category and 36.4% in the borderline category. There was a significant relationship between Quran memorization activity (P-value = 0.024) and social environment (P-value = 0.001) with mental health. However, counseling and genetic guidance services did not show any significant relationship with mental health (P-value > 0.05). Conclusion: The study suggests that schools can support students’ mental health through meetings, counseling, Quran activities, and guidance from teachers. It is recommended to implement mental health screening programs at schools, provide spiritual and mental guidance, create Quran memorization award programs, and promote mental health education. Encouraging students to engage in positive activities can also help improve their mental well-being.

Abstract

Background: Incorporating cultural factors into nursing care can support the achievement of therapeutic goals. The use of traditional medicine alongside conventional treatment has gained attention in managing hypertension, especially in culturally diverse settings. Purpose: This study aims to explore the medication practices of patients with hypertension from a nursing perspective, emphasizing cultural influences and traditional medicine use. Methods: Employing a qualitative ethnographic design, the research was conducted at three public health centers in rural and urban Bima, Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, from February to August 2024. Sixteen patients with hypertension, purposively selected via snowball sampling, participated through in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data analysis involved thematic analysis and triangulation, with validation from informants and experts. Results: Findings reveal that patients often combine prescribed antihypertensive medications with traditional remedies. Three main themes emerged. The first, cultural care practices in medication, includes six subthemes: oral traditional medicine, traditional body scrubs for warming, Bimanese munching-spraying medicine, and treatments applied to the head. The second theme highlights the combination of Bimanese traditional treatments with hypertension medication, divided into two subthemes. The third emphasizes belief in the effectiveness of Bimanese treatments. These practices are deeply rooted in local cultural beliefs and traditions. Conclusions: Recognizing and integrating traditional treatments into nursing care can improve medication adherence among hypertensive patients. Respecting cultural practices and fostering trust in traditional medicine are essential for culturally competent care. Healthcare providers should consider these factors to enhance treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Background: Aging leads to decreased mobility and functional activity due to reduced muscle strength, balance, and endurance. Home exercise is a promising intervention to mitigate this decline. However, the role of endurance as a mediator in enhancing mobility has yet to be explored. Objective: This study analyzes the effectiveness of home physical exercise in improving mobility and functional activity in older adults, emphasizing endurance as a mediating factor. Methods: A systematic literature review (SLR) based on PRISMA guidelines was conducted, analyzing 116 relevant articles from academic databases. Studies were screened and selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, ensuring methodological rigor and relevance to the research topic. Results & Discussion: Findings indicate that home exercise significantly improves endurance, which, in turn, enhances mobility and functional performance. Increased endurance contributes to better movement efficiency, postural stability, reduced fatigue, and independence in daily activities. Key factors influencing the effectiveness of home exercise include the intensity and frequency of workouts, adherence, social support, underlying health conditions, and implementation methods. Despite its benefits, challenges such as physical limitations, lack of motivation, and environmental constraints hinder the sustainability of home exercise programs. Conclusion: Home exercise is an effective strategy for improving mobility in older adults, with endurance playing a crucial mediating role. Future interventions should focus on personalized exercise programs, social support, and technology integration to enhance adherence and maximize benefits.

Abstract

Background: Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety during pregnancy can significantly impact pregnancy outcomes. Agriculture is a high-stress industry that might increase the risks of depression and anxiety. Women in agricultural communities often experience a dual burden from physically demanding labor and reproductive responsibilities, with limited access to mental health services and social support—making them particularly vulnerable. Aims: This study aimed to identify factors contributing to depression and anxiety among pregnant women in an agricultural community in Bogor Regency. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from August to October 2023 in Bogor Regency, West Java. A total of 69 pregnant women attending Cijeruk Primary Health Care were involved. Data were collected via interviews and medical records. Depression and anxiety levels were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Results: The majority of subjects (>60%) had no depression or anxiety. The prevalence of severe and very severe depression was 10.1%, and 5.8% for severe and very severe anxiety. Maternal age was negatively correlated with both depression (r = -0.317, p = 0.008) and anxiety scores (r = -0.332, p = 0.005). No significant associations were found between HDRS scores and other factors such as gestational age, education level, household income, physical activity, or farming family background. Conclusion: The correlation between maternal age and depression and anxiety scores highlights the importance of promoting mature age in premarital counseling. Further research is needed to explore broader determinants of maternal mental health in agricultural communities with larger, more diverse samples.

Abstract

Background: In 2020, Indonesia’s maternal mortality rate (MMR) was 189 per 100,000 live births, well above the SDGs target of 70. High-risk pregnancies significantly contribute to maternal deaths, especially in rural areas with socioeconomic challenges. Disparities in education, income, and healthcare access influence pregnant women’s health-seeking behaviors. ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the relationship between socioeconomic determinants and pregnancy risk and to develop an evidence-based, community-focused health promotion model that addresses these socioeconomic factors in rural settings. Methods: A cross-sectional study involved 130 pregnant women in the Puskesmas Tirto 1 area, Pekalongan Regency, Central Java. Data collection used structured questionnaires, analyzed via binary logistic regression. A theoretical framework guided community-based health promotion recommendations. Results:  The analysis revealed that age, parity, education, and income collectively affected pregnancy risk (p=0.033). Individually, only income had a significant effect (p=0.039; Exp(B)=0.380; 95% CI: 0.150–0.962), indicating higher income reduces high-risk pregnancy likelihood. Age, parity, and education were not significant predictors. Conclusion: Economic factors are the strongest predictors of pregnancy risk among the variables studied. Maternal health programs in rural areas should incorporate socioeconomic-based strategies through community empowerment, improved healthcare access, and targeted health education.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a growing health problem, including among university students. The Indonesian government, through the Healthy Living Community Movement (GERMAS), promotes healthy lifestyles as a preventative measure against non-communicable diseases, including obesity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and the incidence of obesity among university students in Papua Province. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The respondents were 127 university students studying in Jayapura City, selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements, and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results of the study showed a significant relationship between physical activity (p = 0.028, < 0.05) with a relative risk (RP) value of 3.119, and fruit and vegetable consumption (p = 0.005, < 0.05) with an RP value of 3.160, in relation to obesity. Activities within the Healthy Living Community Movement are mandatory for students as a form of prevention against non-communicable diseases. The movement, which encourages physical activity and the consumption of fruits and vegetables, should be implemented as a regular program at both public and private universities in Papua Province. University leaders in charge of student affairs are required to allocate regular funds to support this initiative.

Abstract

Background: Many pregnant women have low health literacy, negatively affecting maternal and child health. Digital innovations offer potential solutions for health education, but no interactive roadmap specifically addresses pregnancy-related health literacy. Objective: This study explores the experiences, needs, and preferences of pregnant women and stakeholders in developing an interactive digital education roadmap to improve pregnancy health literacy. Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 26 participants: six pregnant women, six husbands, two public health cadres, six midwifery students, and six midwives. Data collection involved face-to-face and online interviews, which were transcribed verbatim. Data analysis employed conventional content analysis, identifying themes and subthemes through coding and consensus. Triangulation and quotations ensured validity. Results: Three main themes emerged: (1) the urgency of health literacy, highlighting its role in knowledge, decision-making, adaptation, and misinformation prevention; (2) the need for comprehensive information on maternal health, fetal development, psychological support, nutrition, danger signs, and the husband's role; and (3) a preference for interactive digital roadmaps featuring attractive visuals, diverse media (infographics, videos, animations), cultural integration, accessibility, and ease of use. Conclusion: Developing interactive digital roadmaps as structured, user-friendly educational tools can enhance pregnancy health literacy. These innovations empower women and support healthcare providers and families. Integrating such tools into maternal health programs and establishing supportive policies can strengthen antenatal education and promote informed decision-making.
