Abstract

This study aimed to examine the influential factors that lead to the profitability of Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative members in Muhanga District, Rwanda. The assessment was carried out with a survey method using 120 respondents who were selected using purposive sampling. The respondents comprised 60 cooperative members and 60 non-cooperative members who were maize farmers, while 6 local leaders and staff of Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative were used as key informants. Data were then collected using questionnaires and interviews, followed by assessment using profitability calculation and multiple regression analysis. The assessment was carried out to analyze the effect of the independent variables (price of maize seeds, price of fertilizers, price of pesticides, wage of labor, maize production, and land lease price) on the dependent variable (the profitability of cooperative members of Tuzamurane Cyeza). The results showed that the profitability of 60 members was 13.8%, while a value of 4.9% was obtained for non-cooperative members. The value of the F-Critical (2.26) was less than the F-calculated (7.200) and the P-value (0.009) was below the significant level (0.05). This showed that the model developed in this study could be used in predicting the contribution of independent variables to the dependent variable. This study also showed that 1 coefficient (maize production) had a positive relationship with Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative members, while 5 coefficients (price of maize seeds, price of fertilizers, price of pesticides, wages of labor, land lease price) had an inverse association. Based on the results, all independent variables had an impact on the profitability.

Abstract

The recovery process following the 2004 mega-disaster and the Covid-19 pandemic have significant implications for the dynamics of change and community resilience in Banda Aceh. A resilient community is characterized by the ability to adapt to various threat risks, including volatile market conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate livelihood assets in Banda Aceh and the influence on households vulnerability to fluctuation in the market price of food commodity. To achieve this objective, the study used a questionnaire survey method with 560 household heads as the unit of analysis spread across 28 villages in Banda Aceh. Furthermore, data were analyzed using a descriptive method to calculate livelihood assets and vulnerability index, along with multiple linear regression to analyze the effect of livelihood capital on vulnerability. The results showed that the condition of human and financial capital was still weak compared to social and physical capital. Households also had a high level of vulnerability to fluctuation in food prices. Statistically, human, financial, and social capital had a significant effect on households vulnerability. This study showed the importance of fostering both human and financial capital at the households level to improvequality of life and economic resilience. There were also needs for initiatives to improve social networks as a means of adapting to unexpected events.

Abstract

Community food barns (lumbung) are one of the local institutions established to maintain food security in rural areas. In line with this objective, several studies have been conducted to address concerns about the declining sustainability of traditional community food barns, which are vital for ensuring food security and preserving cultural heritage in rural areas. This indicates that there is an urgent need to strengthen local food systems and support rural development initiatives by assessing institutional factors influencing their sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the sustainability of community food barns and identify the dominant factors. Multidimensional Scaling analysis was used to measure sustainability and determine the dominant influential factors. The study population comprised 32 respondents from 32 groups of barns spread across the Special Region of Yogyakarta. A total of 3 dimensions were involved in the analysis, namely institutional, socio-cultural, and economic. The analysis results showed that the sustainability of community food barns was classified as the 'quo' criterion. This indicated that the current status of the sustainability of traditional barns could not develop naturally to a higher level without intervention. In addition, the dominant factors determining the level of sustainability were identified from the 3 dimensions. Strategies to improve sustainability could be pursued from various aspects. Based on the results, the current study showed that fostering farmer group activities and enhancing collaboration with various stakeholders were essential for sustaining traditional community food barns. These efforts strengthened institutional support, promoted knowledge sharing, and ensured collective resource management, ultimately contributing to rural development and agricultural resilience.

Abstract

This study is intended to evaluate the utilization of official statistics for academic research as well as for policymaking in agriculture sector in Indonesia.  To achieve the goal a conceptual framework of the relationship among official statistics, academic research, and policymaking was constructed.  The intensity of official statistics use for academic research was examined by analyzing the content of 7814 articles published in all 47 scientific journals officially affiliated with the Indonesian Society of Agricultural Economics (PERHEPI), 1978-2023.  It is found that the majority of the articles (62.6%) did not use BPS data. Furthermore, in the last two decades the utilization of secondary data for academic research papers tends to decrease, from 55.7% of the total articles published in 2004-2013 to 42.4% in 2014-2023. These results of calculation and other quantitative analyses were shown to 80 prominent resource persons for evaluation.  The majority of the respondents assessed that the level of utilization of BPS data was low or very low.  The factors that determine the level of utilization are relevance, accessibility, preference, and quality of the data.  The respondents also identified the needs to solve the problems of communication, collaboration, and coordination among the stakeholders of the ecosystem (official statistics agency, academia, and policymakers) to improve the functioning of the ecosystem of data utilization.  These findings are potentially beneficial for providing points of consideration in public discourses including those for revising the statistics law (UU Statistik) that has been undertaken by lawmakers in the Indonesian parliament (DPR) since 2023.

Abstract

Jember Regency is included in top three regencies in Province of East Java that have the largest amount of Siamese citrus production, with a total of 116.473,5 tons which shows a decrease from previous year, that is 171.322,3 tons on 2021. There are two subdistricts in Jember Regency that become Siamese citrus centre, namely Semboro Subdistrict and Umbulsari Subdistrict. Semboro Subdistrict has a smaller land area of Siamese citrus than Umbulsari Subdistrict, but it has more productivity that reached up to 28 ton/ha. It is assumed that the intensity of Huanglongbing (HLB) disease and how farmers overcome the disease may cause the difference. HLB is an infectious disease caused by Liberibacter asiaticus and transmitted by citrus psyllid vector insect. Until now, there is no specific best treatment has been found for citrus crops affected by HLB disease. Thus, this research aims to measure and compare the farmers’ capacity level in overcoming HLB disease with Andragogy Theory as the used grand theory. After conducting a proportional random sampling, data of 30 farmers from Semboro Subdistrict and 32 farmers from Umbulsari Subdistrict were analyzed by independent sample t-test. The result shows there is no significant difference between farmers’ capacity level in Umbulsari and Semboro Subdistrict. The capacity level of farmers in Umbulsari Subdistrict is 62,33%, meanwhile in Semboro Subdistrict is 63,27%.

Abstract

This paper details how the IndoDairy Project fostered a sense of community and shared learning by trialling a Focus Farm as a new extension approach. The selection process was collaborative, with two farmers successfully passing the rigorous processes. These processes included an interview on their motivation, verification through a farm visit, assessment by comparing the strengths and weaknesses among all candidates, and confirmation on the agreement as a chosen focus farmer. The chosen farmers also had the opportunity to select their own Support Farmers group, which comprised around 3-5 people. The Project Team, a key facilitator in the trial, recommended experts as the Advisory Group, who were selected adjustably based on their expertise to support the implementation of technology interventions. In total, there were ten farmers and seven advisors involved. The Focus Farm had six monthly meetings to monitor and update the farm condition and then discuss what works well and what needs improvement. The project facilitated farmers to trial planting high-quality forages and making silage from these forages. Moreover, the Project also facilitated laboratory analyses for samples of soil, forages, concentrates, and composts they used when planting the forages. Looking at the laboratory results, farmers learned about nutrition balance from local feed resources. Lastly, Open Day aimed to share experiences and lessons learned about being a Focus Farm with more farmers and stakeholders, such as farmer-to-farmer learning.

Abstract

Disability theory encompasses diverse approaches, including socio-political, materialist, cultural, and poststructuralist perspectives, challenging traditional medical models and emphasizing social causes and implications of disablement. This research examines the process and results of empowering disabled people through Pertamina Inc. Boyolali BBM Terminal's CSR program, which aims to realize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program has been implemented since 2018, providing batik and sewing training to disabled individuals in Boyolali district. The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through document analysis. The results show that the empowerment process has economically, psychologically, and socially benefited disabled people, enabling them to meet their needs, gain self-confidence, and overcome social stigma. The program's success is also reflected in the participants' annual turnover of 50 million. This achievement supports the realization of SDGs, particularly in reducing poverty, promoting healthy and prosperous lives, ensuring decent work and economic growth, and reducing inequality. The study concludes that the CSR program's empowerment process, which provides skills training, has been highly beneficial and contributes to achieving SDGs. The research recommends that State-owned companies and other companies should prioritize empowering more disabled people, as their numbers remain significant and have not been adequately covered by CSR programs.

Abstract

The digital transformation of auction market management plays a crucial role in addressing the high volume of chili peppers and mitigating potential inefficiencies and inaccuracies in operational processes. However, several challenges persist in implementing this transformation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the process of transitioning auction market management from conventional to digital. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, insights were obtained from auction market managers representing five distinct groups in Kulon Progo Regency. Data collection methods included focus group discussions (FGDs), observation, and in-depth interviews. The results showed varying levels of readiness for digital adoption across the markets, with Tani Rejo Auction Market leading in digital technology utilization. Key factors influencing the pace and success of this transformation included institutional dynamics, leadership capabilities, and human resource preparedness. However, persistent farmers perceptions regarding the potential adverse impacts of digital pricing on livelihoods remained a barrier. This study outlined a phased transformation process, comprising initial communication, goal setting, system analysis, implementation of digital applications, training, socialization, evaluation, and follow-up. In addition, support from stakeholders, particularly the Agriculture Office and Bank Indonesia (BI), was identified as crucial in facilitating farmers and traders through the digitalization process, typically improving market efficiency and benefiting all stakeholders.
