Abstract

Abstract This study is concerned with translation field, especially on the shift in the process of English—Indonesian translation. It illustrates the types of shift that occurs in the Garuda Magazine. It is also aimed at discovering whether those English Noun Phrases are transferred into Noun Phrases in Indonesian. The principle of loss and gain of information in translation mostly occurs in the transfer of Source Language text to Target Language text. Regarding the research methodology, observation and a note taking technique are applied for the data collection and the theory used for the analysis is restricted to the shift proposed by Catford and the theory of loss and gain of information proposed by Nida.In relation to the above explanation, it is hoped that by recognizing shift and the theory of loss and gain information, the translator will be able to pinpoint and restate meaning more effectively due to it will be easier to get the intended meaning that is going to be translated.After analyzing the data, it was discovered that there were some shifts in translation occurring in the English noun phrases which were also translated into noun phrases in Indonesian as the target language. They were structure shift and intra-system shift. Meanwhile there were also shifts occurring in the translation of English noun phrase which were translated into non NP in the target language. According to the theory proposed by Catford about shift in translation, the shifts occured in this study was called class shift and unit shift. Based on the analysis, it was found that the theory of loss and gain of information proposed by Nida was also mostly applied in the process of transferring the meaning of the noun phrase of the source language text into the target language text.

Abstract

ABSTRACTSome textual materials are occasionally using figurative language. Figurative language is used in any form of communication, such as in daily conversation, articles in newspaper, advertisements, novels, poems, etc. The aim of this study is to analyze the translation procedures applied in translating figurative senses taken from a short story entitled Biangkeladi and translated into The Mastermind. Based on the analysis, there are two common procedures applied; there are transposition and modulation. By considering the figurative senses, the translator should have more attention to choose the lexicon used in TL and the lexicon used is appropriate to convey the meaning in TL ABSTRAKBeberapa teks ada kalanya menggunakan gaya bahasa majas, yang digunakan dalam berbagai ragam komunikasi, seperti dalam percakapan sehari- hari, dalam tulisan artikel, Koran, majalah, novel, puisi dan lainnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan tulisan bergaya bahasa majas yang diambil dari sebuah cerita pendek berjudul Biangkeladi dalam bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa sumber dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa target. Dari hasil penelitian, terdapat dua prosedur penerjemahan yang dipakai, yaitu Transposition dan Modulation. Dengan memperhatikan penggunaan gaya bahasa majas, seorang penerjemah akan memilih kata yang tepat untuk digunakan pada bahasa target dan kata yang digunakan dapat mengimplementasikan arti dari bahasa sumber

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui seberapa besar penggunaan teknik bermain peran dalam meningkatkan pemahaman tata bahasa Inggris siswa khususnya pada penggunaan simple past tense pada kelas X Akomodasi Perhotelan 4 di SMK Negeri 4 Denpasar. Landasan teori dalam penelitian ini yaitu teori tentang tata bahasa, khususnya simple past tense oleh Quirk et al (1985) dan teori tentang pengajaran tata bahasa oleh Williams (2005)Sebelum dilaksanakan pembelajaran, tes awal diberikan untuk mengetahui kemampuan awal siswa sehingga peneliti mengetahui peningkatan yang dialami siswa setelah diberikan pembelajaran. Hasil data kualititatif menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan teknik bermain peran dapat membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan pemahaman mereka mengenai tata bahasa dalam simple past tense sehingga mereka mampu menyusun kalimat dan dialog dengan menggunakan simple past tense secara benar. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari kalimat simple past tense yang disusun oleh siswa pada saat diberikan tes dan terjadi peningkatan selama teknik bermain peran diterapkan.ABSTRACTThis research aimed at finding out how far the use of role play technique could help the students? of SMK Negeri 4 Denpasar on grade X Hospitality Accommodation to improve their understanding of English grammar especially in using simple past tense. The theories which are used in this research are the theory of English grammar especially simple past tense by Quirk et al (1985) and theory of teaching grammar by Williams (2005).Before the treatment was carried, pre-test was conducted in order to know the students? basic ability, so that the researcher knew the progress of the students after the treatment was given. The result of qualititative data showed that the use of role play technique could help the students improve their understanding of English grammar especially in using simple past tense, the students could arrange their own sentences and dialogs using simple past tense correctly. It can be seen from the sentences that were arranged by the students when the tests were given and the students? achievement tests which increased continuously during the application of role play technique.Key words : Grammar, simple past tense, role play technique

Abstract

This article will be concerned with verbal construction in BBDNP. The construction discussed about causatives verb formation. Causativation is related to valency changes of verb. The concept of valence referes to the number of argument  that a head may take, in this case the head is the predicate of a clause. Causativation can increase the valence of a verb. Causative processes involve affixes which will be attached on a particular verb. According to this article, affixes of valenecy changes are causative suffix {-ang} and causative suffix {-in}. Both of them mark the BBDNP base, such as a verb, an adjective, a precategorial even state verb. In other side, suffix {-a} can decrease valence of the verb. Tulisan ini mengenai konstruksi verba BBDNP. Konstruksi yang dimaksud pada tulisan ini adalah konstruksi kausatif . Pengausatifan erat kaitannya dengan perubahan valensi. Konsep valensi mengacu pada jumlah argumen yang dapat dihadirkan oleh verba yang berfungsi sebagai predikat dalam sebuah klausa. Perubahan valensi verba yang dilakukan melalui proses kausatif menyebabkan verba akan mengalami peningkatan valensi. Proses pengausatifan ini melibatkan afiks atau pemarkah yang akan dilekatkan pada verba tertentu. Berdasarkan hasil temuan penelitian tetang mekanisme perubahan valensi BBDNP, diketahui bahwa pemarkah pengubah valensi adalah sufiks kausatif {-ang} dan sufiks kausatif {-in}. Kedua sufiks kausatif ini melekat pada predikat dengan bentuk dasar verba, adjektiva, dan prakatagorial serta verba keadaan sehingga verba-verba tersebut mengalami penaikan valensi. Di sisi lain, ditemukan pemarkah penurun valensi berupa sufiks pasif{-a}.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilakukan pada 26 orang mahasiswa kelas B Semester III Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (STIBA) Saraswati Denpasar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi kokoherensian tulisan esai deskriptif sebelum dan setelah penerapan teknik mind mapping. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas ini terdiri atas dua siklus yang mencakup empat tahapan siklus yaitu perencanaan, penerapan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Metode tes dan non-tes digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data. Data kemudian dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan teori menulis dari Oshima (2006) dan Harmer (2004). Data hasil analisis disajikan secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan tabel dan diagram batang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan mind mapping dalam menulis esai deskriptif dapat meningkatkan kualitas dan kuantitas skor esai terutama penggunaan penanda koherensi di dalamnya. Data menunjukkan nilai rerata aspek koherensi pada tes pratindakan adalah 20.5. Setelah dilakukan penerapan teknik Mind Mapping, kuantitas dan kualitas esai deskriptif mahasiswa meningkat. Peningkatan nilai rerata terjadi sebesar 1.6 poin, yakni nilai rerata siklus I adalah 22.1 dan nilai rerata siklus II adalah 25. Secara kualitas, kekoherenan esai yang dihasilkan pun terlihat dengan jelas, terutama pada penggunaan sinyal transisi. Sebelumnya, sinyal transisi yang digunakan didominasi oleh kata penghubung koordinat “and, but, or”. Sedangkan pada tes siklus I dan II dapat dilihat peningkatannya dengan ditemukannya penggunaan frasa-frasa transisi seperti “in addition, in short” dan kata penghubung adverbial seperti “however, moreover, furthermore” pada hampir semua esai. ABSTRACK This research is Classroom Action Research to 26 students of B class, the Third Semester of Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (STIBA) Saraswati Denpasar. The purpose of this research is to investigate the coherence of descriptive essay before and after the implementation of mind mapping. This Classroom Action Research consists of two cycles that involves four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Test and non-test method are used in collecting data. The data, then, are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively based on writing theory by Oshima (2006) and Harmer (2004). Data those already analyzed are presented descriptively with table and bar chart. The research?s result show that the implementation of mind mapping in writing descriptive essay can increase the quantity of the test score and also the essay quality, especially the coherence of the essay. Pretest data show that the coherence aspect?s mean score is 20.5. After Mind Mapping had applied, the quantity and quality of the students? descriptive essay increased. The increasing of mean score is 1.6 point, which the mean score of coherence aspect in first cycle is 22.1, and the mean score in the second cycle is 25. Qualitatively, the essay coherence can be seen clearly especially in the use of transition signals. The transition signals which were dominated by the used of coordinating conjunction “and, but, or” on pretest, however on first and second cycle test can be also seen the used of transition phrases as “in addition, in short” and conjunctive adverbs “however, moreover, furthermore” almost in all essays.

Abstract

ABSTRAKVariasi bahasa adalah gejala bahasa yang sering muncul dalam pertunjukan kesenian, seperti pada pertunjukan wayang, dalam hal ini pertunjukan wayang Ceng Blonk. Wayang Ceng Blonk merupakan sebuah pertunjukan wayang dengan mengambil cerita dari epos Mahabrata maupun Ramayana yang kemudian dikemas dengan bentuk baru. Kemasan pertunjukan wayang yang baru ini sesuai dengan perkembangan zaman. Bahasa yang sering dipergunakan dalam pertunjukan wayang Ceng Blonk adalah bahasa Bali, bahasa Bali Kuno maupun bahasa Sansekerta disisipi dengan bahasa Indonesia maupun bahasa asing, misalnya bahasa Inggris. Fenomena ini menjadi sangat menarik untuk diteliti lebih lanjut untuk menemukan fenomena variasi bahasa yang muncul dalam pertunjukan wayang Ceng Blonk.ABSTRACTLanguage variation is one of the language phenomenons what mostly occur in the art performance, especially in the wayang Ceng Blonk performance. Wayang Ceng Blonk is one of the wayang performance that is perform in Bali which is take the Ramayana dan mahabarata Epos for the story line and retell with new style. The new performing of Wayang Ceng Blonk followed the moderenisation era; this is caused the performance lately using more than one language as usually. Wayang performance nowdays are using Balinese, ancient Balinese, Sanskrit and sometime adding with Indonesia and English. This is an interesting phenomenom that is found in the Wayang Ceng Blonk performance and it is become an interesting thing to analyse. The language vatiation that is occur in the wayang Ceng Blonk performance are interesting to analyse.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan peserta didik dalam menulis descriptive text sebelum dan sesudah diterapkan pembelajaran berbasis media powerpoint. Sampel yang digunakan adalah peserta didik kelas XI IPS 2 SMA Jembatan Budaya Badung berjumlah 20 orang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuasi eksperimen dengan model the one group pretest-posttest design. Pada tahap pratindakan peserta didik diberikan tes sebagai analisis awal kemampuan menulis dan pada tahap pascatindakan tes dilakukan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan peserta didik setelah pembelajaran dengan media powerpoint diaplikasikan.Proses pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui tes, lembar observasi dan kuesioner. Selanjutnya, data dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif yang disajikan dalam bentuk pemaparan deskriptif, tabel, dan diagram. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa mengalami peningkatan setelah memeroleh treatment. Pada tahap pratindakan diperoleh nilai rata-rata awal sebesar 69,85 dan pada tahap pascatindakan nilai rata-rata mencapai 74,55. Dengan demikian, peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis descriptive text signifikan sebesar 4,70. ABSTRACTAims of this study are to determine the writing skill of descriptive text before and after the implementation of media powerpoint. The samplings were purposely taken from class XI IPS 2 consisting 20 students at SMA Jembatan Budaya Badung. This study was designed in the form of quasi experimental with the one group pretest-posttest design. The students were given pretest at the beginning and posttest at the end of the lesson to analyse their skills in writing as well as the improvement after media was implemented in the learning process.2The data was collected by using three instruments such as, test, observation, and questionnaires. It was qualitatively and quantitatively analysed and presented by tables, charts, and descriptives. The result showed that there was improvement on the students’ writing skill after the treatment was implemented, from 69,85 on the pretest and 74,55 on the posttest. Thus, it means that skill of the students’ writing had siginificant improvement in the value 4,70.

Abstract

AbstractThis research is conducting the word one in english and its equivalent in Indonesian with reference to the novel The Da Vinci Code, 2003 by Brown and its translation, 2013 by Dwijati. The word one in english has catagorized different part namely with singular by one , with plural by ones , modified with article- the, and determiner -that or -this. The catagorized of one could be found in the nominal substitution as cohesive device.The translation one in the English into Indonesian has correspodence equivalent in the text. Molina and Albier (2002:509) stated that translation techniques have five basic characteristics: they affect the result of the translation, they are classified by the comparison with the original, they affect micro-units of text, they are by nature discursive and contextual, and they are functional. The result of translation is made the equivalent between source language and targetlanguage. Based on equivalent Halliday (1976: 38) stated one as substitution is as the replacement of one item by another such as words or phrases. In line with Halliday, Renkema (1993: 38) stated that substitution is a replacement of a word (group) or sentence segment by a “dummy” word.The result in this research devided one into some types nominal substitution as one, ones, the one, this one and that one. The result of translation one can be function as nominal substitution and it?s equivalent in Indonesian.

Abstract

According to Baker (1992), there are a number of translation issues that brings specific level of difficulties for the translator. Those issues includes: cultural-specific concepts, the source-language concept is not lexicalized in the target language, the source-language word is semantically complex, the source and target languages make different distinctions in meaning, the target language lacks a superordinate, the target language lacks a specific term, differences in physical or interpersonal perspective, differences in expressive meaning, differences in form, differences in frequency and purpose of using specific forms, and the use of loan words in the source text. When a translator should translate a text, the translator has to choose what should be kept and what should be sacrificed. Concerning to the issue of form difference in translation, this study is aimed at discussing about premodified NP translation and its translation problem, specifically in historical-cultural text. This aim is fulfilled by analyzing the premodified NP in a bilingual historical book written by Leber (2011) entitled ?Lalitavistara?.Result of this study shows that types of premodified English NP found in bilingual book ?Lalitavistara? which are premodified in term of adjective are varied. The English NP can take single premodification or multiple premodification by combining the adjectives with other types of premodifier. The meaning of these NPs can only be analyzed in term of grammatical equivalence. Literal translation is the most common technique used in this bilingual book Menurut Baker (1992), ada sejumlah isu penerjemahan yang membawa ktingkat kesulitan tersendiri bagi penerjemahnya. Isu-isu tersebut meliputi: konsep-konsep bahasa yang sangat terkait dengan kebudayaan, konsep dalam bahasa sumber yang tidak memiliki padanan dalam bahasa target, kompleksitas kata dalam bahasa sumber, adanya perbedaan makna pada bahasa sumber dan bahasa target, dalam bahasa target tidak ada istilah yang lebih umum, bahasa target tidak ada istilah yang lebih spesifik, perbedaan dalam perspektif fisik atau interpersonal, perbedaan dalam makna ekspresi, perbedaan struktur, perbedaan frekuensi dan tujuan dalam menggunakan struktur tertentu, dan pemakaian kata pinjaman dalam bahasa sumber. Ketika seorang penerjemah harus menerjemahkan sebuah teks, penerjemah tersebut harus memilih aspek mana saja yang harus dipertahankan dan yang mana yang harus dikorbankan. Menanggapi isu penerjemahan yang terjadi, terutama dari segi struktur bahasa, studi ini dimaksudkan untuk membahas tentang penerjemahan frase kata benda dengan premodifier dan masalah penerjemahannya, terutama dalam teks terkait sejarah dan budaya. Tujuan ini dapat dicapat dengan menganalisis frase kata benda dengan premodifier dalam buku bilingual yang ditulis oleh Leber (2011) berjudul ?Lalitavistara?. Hasil srudi ini menunjukkan bahwa jenis frase kata benda yang ditemukan dalam buku ?Lalitavistara? yang dimodifikasi dengan kata sifat beragam. Frase kata benda bahasa Inggris dapat ditemukan dengan memiliki satu premodifier atau banyak premodifier. Makna dalam frase-frase ini hanya bisa dianalisis dari segi ekuivalensi gramatikal saja. Teknik penerjemahan literal yang paling banyak dipakai dalam menerjemahkan buku bilingual ini.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menelaah struktur naratif novel Pulang, menguraikan wujud gangguan mental sebagai akibat dari belenggu jiwa, serta mendeskripsikan strategi pengarang dalam memberikan solusi terhadap belenggu jiwa. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori naratologi dan teori psikologi sastra. Wacana belenggu jiwa dianalisis menggunakan konsep psikologi eksistensialisme berdasarkan penerapan skema aktan dan fungsional sebagai lintasan analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa belenggu jiwa menimbulkan gangguan mental, seperti kegelisahan, stres, trauma, dan depresi. Keempat gangguan psikologis tersebut menghambat proses realisasi diri dalam mewujudkan kehidupan sejati. Gangguan mental kronis yang tidak segera disembuhkan dapat membawa penderita pada kehampaan hidup dan alienasi (perasaan terasing) atau sebaliknya membuat penderita mendekatkan diri pada Tuhan atau transendensi. Untuk mengatasi gangguan mental tokoh-tokoh cerita, pengarang menawarkan dua solusi, yaitu erotisme dan kematian.  Abstract This research is aimed at analyzing the narrative structure of novel Pulang, identifying the form of psychology disorders as the effect of soul fetter, and finding out the writer’s strategies to overcome the psychology disorders. This research used narrative theory and psychology theory. The soul fetter discourse is analyzed by psychology existentialism concept based on the application of actant and functional scheme as the trajectory in exploring the discourse. The research result shows that fatter of soul causes psychology disorders, such as anxiety, stress, trauma, and depression. Those psychology disorders obstruct the process of self realization to get authentic life. Psychology disorders chronic which are not healed well causes meaningless of live and alienation, or on the contrary brings the sufferer to get closer to the God or transcendence. To overcome the psychology disorders of the fiction characters, the writer offers two solutions, both are eroticismand death.
