Abstract

This study aims to explore the local knowledge of communities surrounding Lake Tolire regarding the blue-eyed cuscus (Phalanger matabiru) and to analyze its potential as a contextual learning resource for island-based science education in elementary schools. The research employed a qualitative exploratory design using an ethnoscience approach. Data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with local community members and elementary school teachers, and documentation. The data were analyzed through stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to identify scientific concepts embedded in community knowledge. The findings reveal that local communities possess ecological knowledge related to the behavior, habitat, and feeding patterns of the blue-eyed cuscus, including its nocturnal activity, arboreal lifestyle, and consumption of fruits and leaves within forest ecosystems. This knowledge reflects traditional ecological understanding developed through long-term interactions between humans and their natural environment. Furthermore, the identified local knowledge can be transformed into scientific concepts relevant to the elementary Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) curriculum, such as living organism adaptation, habitat relationships, food chains, and forest ecosystems.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the educational snakes and ladders game on students’ interpersonal intelligence in Social Studies learning and to explain how the game implementation facilitates communication, collaboration, and empathy during classroom activities. The research employed a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. The quantitative phase involved 245 students selected from a population of 629 students at SMP Negeri 2 Pamanukan, Subang Regency, using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate the measurement model (outer model) and structural model (inner model). The results indicate that the educational snakes and ladders game has a positive and significant effect on interpersonal intelligence, with a path coefficient of 0.730 (p < 0.05) and an R-square value of 0.532, indicating substantial explanatory power. The game also significantly influences communication (0.661; R² = 0.437), collaboration (0.714; R² = 0.510), and empathy (0.605; R² = 0.366) as core indicators of interpersonal intelligence. The qualitative phase, conducted through classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students, supports the quantitative findings by showing that the game creates an interactive, participatory, and collaborative learning environment that naturally encourages social interaction. These findings demonstrate that the snakes and ladders game is not merely an instructional aid but functions as a pedagogical strategy capable of strengthening students’ interpersonal intelligence in Social Studies learning. This study contributes empirically and conceptually to the development of game-based learning oriented toward social competence.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of a project-based differentiated learning approach on students’ civic engagement in social studies learning. The study employed a quantitative method with a predictive correlational design. The population consisted of 1,146 students from grades VII, VIII, and IX at SMP Negeri 4 Subang, with a sample of 297 students selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected through structured Likert-scale questionnaires measuring project-based differentiated learning and civic engagement. The instruments were validated through expert judgment and item analysis, and their reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s Alpha. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, prerequisite tests (normality and heteroscedasticity), and simple linear regression analysis. The results show that the implementation of project-based differentiated learning is categorized as good and has a significant positive effect on students’ civic engagement (β = 0.901; p < 0.05). The strength of the relationship is also supported by a strong correlation coefficient (r = 0.740). Furthermore, the effect is consistently observed across all dimensions of civic engagement, including active participation, social responsibility, democratic decision-making, and civic action. These findings indicate that integrating differentiated instruction with project-based learning creates a more adaptive, contextual, and student-centered learning environment that promotes meaningful social involvement. In conclusion, project-based differentiated learning serves as an effective instructional approach to enhance students’ civic engagement in social studies. This approach is recommended for fostering not only academic achievement but also students’ social awareness and responsible citizenship behavior.

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to analyze portrait paintings of Makassar mayors over time, created by several Makassar artists, currently in the collection of the Makassar City Museum. The research identifies strategies employed by the painters in visualizing mayoral portraits, analyzes inhibiting factors they encountered, and examines supporting factors that can be optimally utilized in the painting process. The research methodology uses a qualitative approach through field observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data collection techniques include interview guides, observation sheets, and documentation studies involving 27 realist painters in Makassar City. The results show that the main strategies of the painters include: multi-source reference studies, utilization of photo restoration technology (Remini and Topaz), and intensive collaboration with subjects’ families and evaluation teams. The most significant inhibiting factors are poor quality reference photos, minimal historical information, and limited working time. Supporting factors include the availability of data from subjects’ families, the painters’ extensive experience, and digital technology support. These findings provide a methodological contribution to the development of realistic portrait art practices based on historical documentation in Indonesia.
