Abstract

This study examines at the sociolinguistic phenomena of code-switching among English-Buginese bilingual university students, with a focus on how it helps them negotiate their identities in academic and social settings. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from simulated but contextually authentic interactions such as classroom discussions, peer conversations, and semi-structured interviews. Based on Gumperz's (1982) interactional sociolinguistics and Myers-Scotton's (1993) markedness model, the analysis identified three types of code-switching: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching. The findings show that in academic settings, English is frequently employed to communicate formality, academic authority, and alignment with global academic discourse, whereas Buginese is utilized to maintain solidarity, cultural identity, and shared heritage. In social situations, code-switching promotes humor, emotional expression, and pragmatic efficiency. Switching can be triggered by topic switches, lexical gaps, emphasis, or audience adjustment. The findings show that code-switching is not just a linguistic alternation, but also a conscious communicative resource for identity formation. These findings help to better understand bilingual language behaviors in multilingual societies and have implications for bilingual education and language policy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The increased mobility of international students demands a deep understanding of their motivations, learning experiences, and academic challenges. This study explores the factors that influence the selection of Indonesia as a study destination as well as the process of academic, social, cultural, and psychological adaptation of students at State Islamic Religious Universities (PTKIN), as well as providing insights for the development of international academic policies and practices. A phenomenological qualitative approach was used through in-depth interviews and focused group discussions (FGDs) with international students from various PTKINs, including UIN Malang, UIN Jakarta, and UIN Yogyakarta. The analysis emphasizes students' subjective experiences related to motivation, learning, and academic barriers. The results of the study showed that students' motivation was influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including religious interests, cultural interests, family support, scholarships, career prospects, language skills, and the desire to deepen religious knowledge. Learning experiences include social, cultural, academic, and psychological adaptation, influenced by language skills, peer support, organizational involvement, inclusive teaching methods, and institutional services such as the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program and International Office assistance. The variety of services between PTKIN can be seen, for example, UIN Malang excels in personal mentoring, UIN Jakarta in program flexibility and BIPA, and UIN Yogyakarta in academic access and administrative support. The main academic challenges include language barriers, academic literacy, information limitations, study pressure, curriculum adjustments, and lack of multilingual references and psychosocial support. These findings provide important implications for PTKIN in improving academic services, supporting the adaptation of international students, and strengthening campus internationalization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the principal’s management strategies in improving student achievement at MI Darul Ulum, Ngaliyan District, Semarang City. Student achievement is an important indicator of the success of educational institutions in achieving educational goals. In this context, the school principal plays a strategic role in formulating policies, managing school resources, and creating a conducive learning environment for students. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving the principal, teachers, the school committee, parents, and students as research informants. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was ensured through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation. The results show that the principal’s management strategies in improving student achievement are implemented through three main stages: strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and strategy control. In the formulation stage, the principal conducts a school needs analysis and formulates programs to improve student achievement through participatory planning involving various stakeholders. In the implementation stage, the school carries out academic and non-academic programs such as additional tutoring, remedial learning, enrichment activities, and extracurricular programs to develop students’ potential. In the control stage, the principal conducts monitoring, evaluation, and follow-up actions to ensure the effectiveness of educational programs. The findings indicate that systematic, collaborative, and sustainable management strategies implemented by the principal can improve both academic and non-academic student achievement. These findings are expected to provide insights for educational institutions in developing effective school management strategies to enhance student achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the implementation of religious guidance programs in secondary schools in the digital era. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study type conducted in three types of schools: SMA, SMK, and MAN. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving principals, teachers, and students involved in religious activities. The results of the study indicate that the religious guidance program is implemented in a structured and sustainable manner through daily, weekly, and annual activities, such as Quranic recitation, congregational prayers, religious lectures, infaq activities, and commemorations of Islamic holidays. Each type of school has different characteristics, with SMA and SMK tending to emphasize the habituation of religious activities, while MAN shows a stronger integration between learning and worship practices. However, program implementation faces various dynamics in the digital era, such as the use of devices that disrupt concentration, limited teacher supervision, a lack of activity variety, and the influence of the social environment. On the other hand, the use of digital technology in religious activities is still not optimal and tends not to be systematically integrated. The level of student involvement also shows variation, ranging from active as drivers of activities to passive as participants. Thus, the development of innovative, adaptive, and participatory strategies is necessary, such as utilizing interactive digital media in religious activities, involving students as program drivers through religious organizations, and developing more varied activities based on the needs of the digital generation. These strategies are expected to increase student engagement and strengthen the internalization of religious values in daily life.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of context-based experimental learning in improving elementary students’ problem-solving skills on the topic of changes in the states of matter. Addressing the persistent gap in Indonesian students’ scientific problem-solving performance reported by PISA 2022, the research employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design involving 18 fourth-grade students from MI Ma’arif NU Cipete. Students’ problem-solving ability defined as the capacity to understand problems, devise strategies, and evaluate solutions was assessed using essay-based tests. The results showed a substantial improvement, with an N-Gain score of 0.72 (high category), indicating strong learning effectiveness. These findings demonstrate that context-based experimental learning not only strengthens conceptual understanding but also fosters active engagement and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). The study provides empirical evidence supporting this method as a viable instructional strategy in elementary science education. Future research should extend the model to broader topics and diverse school contexts to confirm its generalizability.

Abstract

The memorization of the Qur'an (ḥifẓ al-Qur'ān) has been a central aspect of Islamic education for centuries. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences in memorizing the Quran using digital and murrotal Qurans, critical thinking of students at different levels and the influence of interaction between memorizing the Quran using digital and murrotal Qurans on memorizing the Quran. Quantitative methodology was implemented in the present research, using a quasi-experimental design. This design integrates a non-equivalent control group methodology with a two-way factorial design (2 x 3 ANOVA). This investigation employed a sample of 300 students. A total of 150 participants comprised each cohort. The participants of this investigation were first-year pupils at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University in Banten. This research yielded three principal findings: 1) A disparity exists in the memorisation capabilities of students utilising digital Qur'an against auditory murrotal. 2) There exists a disparity in the capacity to memorise the Qur'an among pupils with high, medium, and low levels of critical thinking. 3) An interaction exists between the utilisation of digital Qur'an and audio murrotal, influencing students' critical thinking regarding their capacity to memorise the Qur'an. The proposed study presents novelty by addressing this gap, offering a comparative analysis of the role that critical thinking plays in memorizing the Qur'an using digital and audio murottal Qur'ans. The novelty lies in integrating cognitive psychology with Qur'an education, proposing that students with higher critical thinking skills may engage more deeply with the digital Qur'an, thereby enhancing their retention.

Abstract

Metaphorical competence has been recognized as essential to advanced communicative proficiency in a second language, yet Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) has remained entirely absent from this research landscape, despite rapid global growth in learner numbers across typologically diverse language backgrounds. This study synthesizes internationally recognized empirical studies published between 2010 and 2025 on how second-language learners construct and use conceptual metaphor in discourse, with direct implications for BIPA instruction. Analysis was conducted using a Cross-Cultural Cognitive Discourse Analysis framework integrating Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Critical Metaphor Analysis, and van Dijk's sociocognitive approach, with metaphor identification following the MIPVU procedure. Three dominant patterns were identified. First, learners systematically transfer conceptual schemas from their first language into Indonesian discourse, producing utterances that are grammatically correct but culturally incongruent conceptual fluency failure with the extent and type of transfer varying predictably by language family. Second, orientational metaphors show significant cross-cultural variation: schemas such as POWER IS UP operate universally, while others are culture-specific, and processing them in a second language incurs measurable cognitive load. Third, ontological metaphors encoding distinctly Indonesian concepts gotong royong, musyawarah-mufakat, and rukun are systematically distorted when reconstructed through first-language conceptual systems, producing reductions that eliminate their most fundamental ontological properties. On this basis, the study proposes two contributions: the Universal-Relative Metaphor Principle, which resolves the universalism-relativism debate by locating each position at a different level of analysis, and the Cross-Cultural Metaphor Competence Framework, a four-dimensional hierarchical pedagogical model for BIPA. This study thus represents the first data-grounded contribution to metaphor theory and pedagogy in the BIPA context.
