Abstract

Minangkabau has often been identified as an excluisve ethnic group.  In contrast to this view, Nias etnic group in West Sumatera has established a peaceful encounter between Christians and Muslim from both ethnic groups. Nias tribe has been in Padang for about 500 years and encouter Islam as the dominant religion of Minangkabau and other wolrkd religion, namely Christianity. This is something new for the Nias tribe because at first they had animistic beliefs. This article aimes to show the social phenomenon of the meeting between the Nias-Kristen and the Minangkabau-Muslim. Nias community has created a new identity in peacefully bridging the community with Muslim community in Padang. This article explores the formation of new identity among Nias-Padang community as bridging and copping mechanisms to live in a multicultural context that based on Minangkabau-Muslim values in Padang. This new identity heled them to adapt and develop in Padang. This new identity is called Hada Nono Niha Wada (Custom of Nias Padang). This change does not only relate to the name used but also includes component that are in the custom itself. The author employs Homi Bhabha’s third space theory to examine the encounter of Nias Padang-Christianity community and Minang-Muslim host community in Padang. The article shows that through social negotiation, Nias Padang-Christianity community in Padang have formulated new identity that different from that of Nias in the Island of Nias and created the third space to copping with Minangkabau culture-tradition. This negotiation resulted in a custom that had a pattern of openness in accepting differences. The third space provides a place for them to build a mindset that can make them survive as a minority that is able to manage differences into a unity that can be accepted by various parties and living peacefully with the Minangkabau-Muslim community in the greater Padang area.

Abstract

This article attempts to look at church-based conflicts using the Critical Leadership (CL) approach in collaboration with Actor Network Theory (ANT) and finds its relevance for communal life. Using an interdisciplinary approach with qualitative methods, the collaboration of CL and ANT found that all resources of religious organizations in conflict situations are networks of actors whose interactions legitimize power and can also be a path to reconciliation. From the lens of CL and ANT, conflicts that result in dualism in church organizations are seen as both a process and a result of actor interactions and relations during the conflict. Therefore, reconciliation can also be used as a process and a result of the CL and ANT mechanisms which then present policy recommendations such as the intensity of structural actor meetings that can produce joint programs for church members, and can also be a path for institutional unification and reconciliation.

Based on the results of the research, the author found that it is true that the GPM congregational songbook is the work of the Maluku people used in the worship life of the Maluku people, which is inseparable from the context of the social and cultural life of the Maluku people so that this congregational song can be referred to as the folksong of the Maluku people which is contextualized by theological and cultural understanding. The next finding also presents several song titles and lyrics that contain kinetic memory so that when sung with body movements, it will liven up the atmosphere of worship that is more vibrant and excite the congregation.

Abstract

Soekarno's grave in Blitar is busy with pilgrims from various religions daily. This place has become a space for interfaith meetings. The Blitar government also annually facilitates interfaith prayer activities, which are held four times a year as a symbol of fostering a spirit of tolerance. When pilgrims hold a prayer ritual, a third space is formed for social interaction between the first room and the second room. This article aims to answer the ontological question regarding understanding the encounter between interfaith pilgrims who form the third space at the Soekarno Tomb. This article uses a qualitative descriptive method through literature review, observations, and in-depth interviews in the Soekarno Grave Area, Blitar. The research results concluded that interfaith encounters during the pilgrimage at Soekarno's grave created a thirdspace construction according to Edward Soja's theory, which can be applied at the individual, institutional and community levels. Based on these findings, the main argument is that Soja's thirdspace construction is a framework for thinking to build social glue. The thirdspace construction allows humans to interact socially, which connects different characters and traits.

Abstract

Development projects that disregard Indigenous rights often provoke resistance, particularly in West Papua, Indonesia, where the Indigenous Kaimana people uniquely employ covert resistance through oral traditions to safeguard their rights. This study aims to understand how the Kaimana Indigenous community utilizes orality as a form of resistance against developmental structuralism. Employing a realist ethnographic method, this research directly observes the daily lives of the Indigenous community and documents forms of hidden resistance embedded in their oral traditions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observation, and documentary analysis of symbolic resistance activities. The findings reveal that Kaimana's Indigenous resistance is conveyed through three principal elements: storytelling, symbolism, and ritual. First, storytelling serves as a medium of resistance by recounting their spiritual connection to nature as a way of upholding ancestral rights. Second, symbols such as bamboo and sago leaves are used in road blockades, representing life and resistance. Third, traditional rituals involving everyday symbols are believed to possess mystical power and are used to protect Indigenous lands. These three elements illustrate that while the Kaimana community does not wholly oppose development, they demand that their customary rights be respected throughout the process.

Abstract

Interfaith encounters and dialogue in Indonesia have always focused only on official religions recognized by the Indonesian government. The purpose of this research is to further examine the encounter between official religions in Indonesia, specifically Protestant Christianity and the indigenous religion (ancestral religion) in West Sabu. The people of Sabu have an indigenous religion called Jingitiu. The encounter between Christianity and Jingitiu occurs in the rukat'tu ritual as a liminal space and the creation of social recognition of Jingitiu. The research method used is qualitative with a critical ethnographic approach. The theory used with an interdisciplinary approach is liminality according to Victor Turner and social recognition according to Axel Honneth. The findings show that discrimination, differentiation and public rejection are still ongoing to this day, but the rukat'tu ritual becomes a space of acceptance between Christianity and indigenous religions by sitting on one mat together in performing rituals, eating traditional food together and supporting each other in times of sorrow. This can foster a sense of brotherhood, equality, peace and harmonious relationships between religions.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the shift in religious tolerance from factual space to virtual space through the Jesus Burake statue. The research subjects are Toraja people and Netizens in virtual space. The research method that will be used is qualitative with the type of digital ethnography research. The author raises the Burake Jesus Statue as one of the religious tourism objects in Toraja that has become a shared space. This phenomenon will be studied using Axel Honneth's theory of Recognising the principles of love, law and solidarity. Izak Lattu's ‘Click Ritual’ theory to analyse how netizen click rituals on social media bring narratives of peace in virtual spaces. The author finds that the statue of Jesus Burake has become a shared space for interfaith people in South Sulawesi. Several interfaith activities were conducted at the statue, such as a joint prayer for world peace, raising the red and white flag during the Indonesian Independence Day and planting 1,000 trees. Documentation of these activities shared on social media gave rise to narratives of tolerance and peace. So that virtual space becomes a creative new space to strengthen attitudes of tolerance between religious communities.
