Abstract

Rejection of leaders of different religions, ethnicities and so on is the main in the 2017 DKI Jakarta Governor Election, especially narratives of indigenous and non-indigenous sentiment. The church should take a role in responding to this problem. The research method that the author will use in this paper is the qualitative method of descriptive analysis. The author will also analyze the problem of why ethnicity is used as a political tool and will explore how the issue of ethnicity occurs in Indonesia and the functional role of the church in seeing this. This research uses theories about identity politics, religion in the public sphere by Habermas, Talcott Parsons' structural functionalism and Hendropuspito's religious functionalism. In a social society, of course religion as a social institution has a role and function in responding to situations that occur around it. The church does not mean being silent but has a prophetic voice to respond to this. This shows an important transformative role, namely instilling the value of renewing understanding in church members and the surrounding community about the importance of living together in a multiethnic society.

Abstract

This article explores the Tombor Maghi ritual among the Fakfak community in West Papua Province, Indonesia, which strengthens interfaith relations, particularly between Muslims and Christians. Originally part of a traditional marriage custom, the ritual has developed into a broader form of community solidarity involving cross-religious cooperation. While scholars in anthropology and sociology have extensively studied rituals, research that focuses explicitly on rituals within the context of inter-religious relations remains relatively underdeveloped. This study addresses three main research questions: how the Tombor Maghi ritual is practiced and interpreted by the Fakfak community across religious affiliations; what role the ritual plays in fostering interfaith cooperation and reinforcing communal solidarity; and what symbolic and social significance the ritual holds within the broader framework of lived religion and indigenous approaches to peacebuilding. This study employs a qualitative methodology, utilising a realist ethnographic approach. Data were collected through interviews and field observations conducted in Fakfak Regency. The findings indicate that Tombor Maghi continues to be preserved as a form of cultural dialogue that weaves together interfaith relations. The ritual reflects cultural knowledge that is created, transmitted, and practised in daily life. It provides a space for Muslims and Christians to collaborate through community-based initiatives, such as at mosques and churches. In light of these findings, further research related to this topic is suggested because there are still many interesting issues to discuss in connection with rituals that have become a philosophy in social life.

Abstract

This research examines local wisdom as a model for recognizing indigenous religions within the context of interfaith encounters through adat practices. While Indonesia’s diversity of beliefs is a significant cultural asset, it can also become a source of conflict if not properly managed, particularly concerning the recognition of indigenous religions. Indigenous religions serve as guardians of local wisdom and play a crucial role in fostering social cohesion. Therefore, the application of local wisdom through adat practices is vital for facilitating interfaith encounters in everyday life, aligning with the concept of lived religion. The interpretation of local wisdom and the practice of traditional ceremonies—comprising rituals, symbols, and oral narratives—play a pivotal role in acknowledging the existence and value of indigenous religions. By focusing on the case of Marapu, indigenous religion in Sumba, this research highlights the importance of recognizing indigenous religions within the broader Indonesian context. The study employs a qualitative methodology with a critical ethnographic approach, utilizing data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that adat, as a lived religious practice among the people of Sumba, serves as a “womb” capable of providing social recognition for Marapu. Within the Christian-Marapu encounter, significant interpenetration occurs during the implementation of adat, emphasizing the deep entwinement of cultural practices and belief systems in sustaining mutual respect and coexistence.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the functions of religion in the religious experiences of elderly members involved in a religious WhatsApp group at GKI Tegalrejo, Salatiga. This study employs a qualitative descriptive–interpretative approach supported by descriptive quantitative data. The participants consisted of 12 elderly individuals aged 60–75 who had been actively involved in the religious WhatsApp group for at least six months. Data were collected through a 1–4 scale questionnaire to map the intensity of digital religious experiences, as well as semi-structured interviews to explore the meanings of those experiences. The findings indicate that the WhatsApp media group functions as a digital religious space that primarily strengthens the social and emotional functions of religion, such as a sense of togetherness, emotional support, and the presence of a faith community. These findings suggest that digital media function not only as communication tools but also as a medium of religious experience that is relevant to the lives of the elderly today.

Abstract

Previous studies have often regarded the tongkonan solely as a traditional, primordial symbol tied exclusively to Toraja culture. This article challenges that view by exploring the broader, transnational ethical dimensions of the tongkonan symbolism, which have not been fully addressed in existing literature. This research aims to empirically examine the relationship between individual subjects, the Toraja community, and other global communities, integrating these findings into a holistic, cosmopolitan perspective. Adopting a qualitative approach with a hermeneutic framework, this study analyzes the tongkonan as a cultural text through the lenses of symbol theory and ethical cosmopolitanism. Six informants participated in the study, consisting of two customary leaders, a church official, a religious leader, an educational practitioner, and a tongkonan carver. Data were collected through unstructured interview and observation. The research findings demonstrate that the symbolism of the tongkonan, understood as a representation of the microcosm, aligns with the principles of ethical cosmopolitanism, particularly in terms of cosmic brotherhood or fraternity. The Toraja people, through their symbolic use of the tongkonan, have historically positioned themselves as cosmopolitans or world citizens. The tongkonan embodies an ideal type of human being—one who is guided by solidarity and a sense of responsibility towards the liyan (fellow beings), thus reflecting a cosmopolitan personality. These results confirm the congruence between the symbolic meaning of the tongkonan and the tenets of ethical cosmopolitanism, indicating that the Torajan people have embraced their identity as global citizens, ethically connected across transnational scales.
