Abstract

The stroboscopic lighting technique in photography allows for repeated motion recording in a single frame, thus displaying rhythms and more dynamic movement patterns. This technique is highly essential for recording dance movements, especially traditional dances that have a lot of expression, patterns, and rhythms of movements. This activity aims to improve the individual skill of the photography community, particularly developing stroboscopic technique in order to be more capable of capturing dance. This training involved a complete introduction to all the basic theories of photographic strobe lighting, hands-on practice of how to shoot with various strobe settings, and evaluation of each participant's work. Forty-three participants participated in mastering how to calculate the frequency and duration of exposure and synchronize the camera with flash lighting during shooting the dancers' movements. The result indicates that the participants achieve higher understanding of the process of shooting the dynamics of dance movements using the artificial light lighting method, which is able to display the dancer's movement photos clearly in 3-5 movement phases in one frame. The indicator of this understanding is being able to produce images using stroboscopic techniques presented at the time of the preview of the work. This activity is highly essential as it can increase each participant's understanding of motion photography technically and its application during the shooting process. Through this program, participants are able to improve their skills in visualizing traditional dance through photography. This stroboscopic photography technique can display a more attractiv two-dimensional visual form, maintain, and improve the image of Indonesian cultural art.
