Abstract

Abstract One of the fundamental steps toward a healthy and productive life is breastfeeding, which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (Bennett et al., 2020). Low rates of exclusive breastfeeding lead to various infant health problems. The North Sumatra Provincial Government has recorded 299 cases of infant mortality until July 2021. Records from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, as many as 31.36% of 37.94% of children are sick, because they do not receive exclusive breastfeeding. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is currently at 27.67%. The low coverage of exclusive breastfeeding is influenced by various obstacles to optimal breastfeeding, one of the biggest obstacles is working women, especially those who work in the informal sector. The purpose of this study was to determine "The perspective of women informal workers in exclusive breastfeeding in the working area of the Deli Tua Health Center. This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological approach. Abstract

Hypertension is a common health issue frequently experienced by menopausal women. As women enter menopause, their risk of developing hypertension increases by approximately 41% compared to men, primarily due to the decline in estrogen levels during this period (Indalifiany & Suryani, 2024). In Indonesia, hypertension is recognized as one of the leading causes of death. The management of hypertension in menopausal women can involve both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Pharmacological treatments typically include the use of antihypertensive medications such as diuretics, beta-blockers, and vasodilators (Chobanian et al., 2014). Meanwhile, non-pharmacological interventions like elderly gymnastics have been shown to effectively help reduce blood pressure. The exercise facilitates the release of heat, lactic acid, and carbon dioxide from the muscles, improving blood circulation and oxygen supply to muscle tissues, which promotes vasodilation, capillary relaxation, and ultimately lowers blood pressure (Muharni & Christya Wardhani, 2020). In a community service activity conducted in West Deli Tua Village, it was found that 80% of 30 participating menopausal women experienced an increase in knowledge about the benefits of elderly gymnastics. Additionally, a noticeable reduction in blood pressure was observed among participants after engaging in the exercise program.

Abstract

Low birth weight (LBW) remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, contributing to neonatal morbidity, mortality, and long-term developmental challenges. Although numerous studies have explored LBW, evidence on maternal risk factors in low-resource settings particularly within independent midwife practices remains scarce. This study examined the associations between maternal age, parity, antenatal care (ANC) visits, history of anemia, and gestational weight gain with LBW incidence in Deli Tua Sub-District, Deli Serdang Regency. A case–control design was employed from December 2024 to March 2025, involving 95 postpartum mothers (35 cases, 60 controls) selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires (Content Validity Index = 0.82; Cronbach’s α = 0.85) and maternal health records, and analyzed using Chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression (SPSS version 22). Multivariate analysis identified maternal age at risk (<25 or >35 years) as the sole significant predictor of LBW (OR = 6.69; 95% CI = 3.21–25.22; p = 0.006). Parity (OR = 2.76; p = 0.077), ANC visits (OR = 1.22; p = 0.797), history of anemia (OR = 0.57; p = 0.421), and gestational weight gain (OR = 1.20; p = 0.773) were not significantly associated with LBW. The model demonstrated acceptable fit (Hosmer Lemeshow p = 0.49; Nagelkerke R² = 0.29). Maternal age emerged as the most influential determinant of LBW in this population. These findings underscore the importance of targeted surveillance for high-risk age groups and the enhancement of promotive and preventive strategies including improved ANC service quality, nutritional counseling, and family engagement in maternal care to reduce LBW incidence in resource-limited settings. Keywords: Anemia, Antenatal Care, Gestational Weight Gain, Low Birth Weight, Maternal Age, Parity

Abstract

Postpartum visits by independent midwives play a critical role in initiating and sustaining exclusive breastfeeding. However, operational and institutional barriers may compromise their effectiveness, particularly in semi‑urban and rural settings such as Deli Tua District. This study examined the association between these barriers and exclusive breastfeeding practices among mothers in Deli Tua. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025, involving all independent midwives in the district (n = 85) and a purposive sample of 120 postpartum mothers (1–6 weeks post-delivery). Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through Chi-Square tests and multivariate logistic regression at a 95% confidence level. Key barriers negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding included lack of government incentives (OR = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.09–0.61; p = 0.004), excessive workload and fatigue (OR = 0.33; 95% CI: 0.14–0.78; p = 0.013), high operational costs (OR = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.17–0.83; p = 0.015), and limited time for visits (OR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.19–0.96; p = 0.043). Conversely, institutional support from health centers significantly increased the likelihood of breastfeeding success (OR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.01–4.01; p = 0.046). Socio-cultural factors such as stigma and customary practices showed no significant association. To enhance the effectiveness of postpartum care and promote exclusive breastfeeding, the study recommends implementing performance-based incentives, reducing workload burdens, providing financial subsidies, and establishing standardized visit-time guidelines. Strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration and resource allocation is essential to improve service delivery and breastfeeding outcomes. Keywords: Exclusive breastfeeding, postpartum care, health system barriers, community midwives, maternal health services

Abstract

Abstract

Most informal female workers in traditional markets are in the reproductive age range. One of the causes of low exclusive breastfeeding in women informal workers is the low implementation of policies related to exclusive breastfeeding in the workplace, especially in the informal sector. Objective to analyze the policies carried out by the local government related to exclusive breastfeeding policies for informal workers in traditional markets. Method: the study was qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Participants consisted of 12 employees of related agencies with purposive sampling. Data collection was done through in-depth interviews using voice records. Data analysis used content analysis by the collaizi method. The principle of traceability was applied to ensure rigor in the research. The results of this study obtained two themes related to the analysis of exclusive breastfeeding policies in Informal Workers of Traditional Markets in North Sumatra, namely 1) perception of lactation corner facilities in the markets; and 2) barriers to the certainty of lactation corners in the traditional market. It is essential to analyze the exclusive breastfeeding policy for informal workers in convention markets to create better policies by providing adequate lactation corner facilities for informal workers.

Abstract

Male infertility has occurred rapidly in the last few decades, primarily in developing countries. An antioxidant, hesperetin is a flavonoid that is found in abundance in orange peels. The aims of this research were to determine the effect of hesperetin on blood sugar levels, spermatozoaquality, and spermatozoa quantity. The research structure included induction of diabetes mellitus and treatment for 8 weeks, followed bydetermination of blood sugar levels, spermatozoa quality, and spermatozoa quantity. Hesperetin has the ability to restore blood sugar levels, spermatozoa quantity, seminiferous tubules diameter, and testicular weight, volume, and germinal epithelial layer thickness with significant difference from the normal control group. Hesperetin did not fully restore spermatozoa motility, viability, and morphology with significant difference from the normal control group, nor from the positive control group. However, overall, hesperetin decreased blood glucose levels, increased spermatozoa quantity, and improved the spermatozoa quality in alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus mice. Dose-dependent activity was observed with the optimum dose at 200 mg/kg body weight.
