Abstract

Abstract

Duku peel is an underutilized agricultural byproduct in Talang Duku Village, a major center of duku production, and is commonly discarded as waste. The community’s heavy reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides presents environmental and health risks, compounded by limited knowledge regarding the processing of agricultural waste into value-added products. This community service program aimed to empower the “A. Khalik Duku Plantation” Farmers Group by converting duku peel waste into a high-value plant-based insecticide in the form of aromatherapy candles, thereby fostering a new generation of creative healthpreneurs. The program applied a participatory community empowerment approach through education, hands-on training, and continuous mentoring. The stages included needs assessment, production and business management training, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test data analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Chi-Square tests. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge (P < 0.001), with the median score increasing from 70% to 80% and the number of participants achieving the ≥80% competency threshold rising from 13 to 49. Furthermore, the program successfully facilitated the production of insect-repellent aromatherapy candles and the establishment of the “KUB Duku Lestari” Joint Business Group, which sold more than 50 units within the first three months. In conclusion, this program effectively transformed agricultural waste into a valuable product, promoted sustainable entrepreneurship, and contributed to improving community welfare. It is recommended that the business group standardize product packaging to enhance market competitiveness and that future studies focus on optimizing extraction techniques to improve product efficacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a cempedak fruit peel extract (Artocarpus integer (Thunb.) Merr.) emulsion and evaluate its effect on hemoglobin levels and lung histopathology in cigarette smoke-exposed Wistar rats. This experimental study used a pre–post control group design involving 36 male Wistar rats divided into six groups: negative control, cigarette smoke-exposed positive control, non-emulsified extract, and emulsion groups at doses of 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg body weight. Among the 36 rats, 26 survived until the end of the study and were included in the final analysis. Cigarette smoke exposure was performed for 14 days using a smoking chamber. Particle size was characterized by laser diffraction, hemoglobin levels were measured before and after treatment, and lung histopathology was assessed semiquantitatively. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, Pearson correlation, and two-way mixed-effects models. The emulsion showed a micrometer-sized particle profile with a median diameter (D50) of 16.17 µm. Hemoglobin levels decreased at the threshold of statistical significance in the pooled pre–post analysis (p=0.05), but no significant treatment-related effect was found. Lung histopathology showed moderate inflammation in the positive control group, while severe inflammation with alveolar–interstitial hemorrhage was observed in the higher-dose emulsion groups. Overall, the current micrometer-sized emulsion did not demonstrate protective effects on hemoglobin levels or lung histopathology. Further nanoemulsion optimization and safety evaluation are required before continued biological testing.

Abstract

Infectious diseases remain a public health problem in urban areas, particularly in densely populated settlements with poor environmental conditions. Inadequate household waste management and substandard sanitation can significantly increase the risk of disease transmission. This study aimed to analyze household waste management and environmental sanitation as determinants of infectious disease incidence among urban communities. A cross-sectional design was employed involving 120 households selected through stratified random sampling based on residential density levels. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and an observation checklist to assess waste management practices, sanitation conditions, and the occurrence of infectious diseases within the past three months. Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests with a 5% significance level. The results showed that 56.7% of households had poor waste management practices, and 52.5% had inadequate sanitation. Infectious diseases were reported in 40% of households. There was a significant association between poor waste management and infectious disease incidence (p=0.01; OR=3.77; 95% CI=1.71–8.31), as well as between inadequate sanitation and disease occurrence (p=0.02; OR=3.29; 95% CI=1.52–7.09). This study concludes that environmental factors, particularly household waste management and sanitation conditions, play an important role in increasing the risk of infectious diseases in urban settings. Strengthening sanitation infrastructure, implementing community-based waste management, and enhancing public health education are essential strategies to prevent environmentally transmitted infections and promote healthier urban environments.

Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin disease that remains a public health problem, especially in areas with high population density and poor sanitation. This study aims to determine the demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, risk factors, and adhesive tape test results in scabies patients at the Olak Kemang Community Health Center and the Putri Ayu Community Health Center in Jambi City. The study used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population was all scabies patients treated at both community health centers during the study period, while a sample of 43 respondents was determined using the Lemeshow formula with a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments included a questionnaire on demographic characteristics and risk factors, a clinical observation sheet, and an adhesive tape test. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis in the form of frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that most patients were school-aged children, females, had no education up to elementary school or equivalent, and were unemployed. Lesions were most commonly found on the upper and lower extremities, with papules as the dominant lesion. Most respondents had poor personal hygiene, unhealthy basic sanitation, and low socioeconomic status, while positive adhesive tape test results were found in 7.0% of respondents. This study concluded that the characteristics of scabies patients at the study site were dominated by behavioral and environmental factors, while the adhesive tape test only identified a small proportion of cases, making it more appropriate to use as a supporting examination for clinical diagnosis.
