Abstract

This study aims to describe the phonological and lexical differences between the Sambori and Tarlawi isolects. The type of research used is quantitative descriptive with a diachronic perspective. Data were collected using a research instrument that provided 200 basic Swadesh?Morish vocabulary items and 867 cultural and non-basic vocabulary items classified according to their semantic fields, employing the “cakap” method and the “simak” method. Data collection was conducted by selecting three informants from each village according to certain criteria. The data collection methods used were the “cakap” method and the “simak” method. The data analysis method employed intralingual matching with the basic technique of intralingual comparison. Further analysis calculated the percentage similarity (status) of isolects in the research area using a dialectometry method. Based on the results conducted, two phonological differences were found, namely vowel differences and consonant differences. Meanwhile, based on the calculated percentage determination of phonological differences in the research area (Sambori village and Tarlawi village) using dialectometry, a difference value of 12.5% was found, indicating a dialect difference between Tarlawi village and Sambori village at the phonological level. Then, at the lexical level, a difference value of 36.5% was found, meaning there is a sub-dialect difference between the Sambori isolect and the Tarlawi isolect.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic forms and cultural meanings embedded in the nyunat (circumcision) tradition of the Sasak community from the perspective of anthropological linguistics. It addresses a research gap in which circumcision traditions in Indonesia have mostly been explored from anthropological and health perspectives. The study aims to document, classify, and interpret ritual lexicons as cultural markers that embody identity, social roles, and spiritual values. Through qualitative methods involving observation, interviews, and document analysis, supported by audio–video recordings, the research constructs a taxonomy of ritual lexicons categorized into three semantic domains—berjap ‘getting ready’, begawe ‘holding a celebration’, and perebaq jengkis ‘ending the ceremony’. This taxonomy demonstrates how ritual language organizes cultural knowledge and encodes social order. Theoretically, the study advances the field of anthropological linguistics by showing how ritual lexicons function as systems that preserve and negotiate cultural meaning across generations. Pedagogically, the findings highlight the potential integration of local ritual lexicons into heritage-based education, cultural literacy, and digital storytelling programs to promote linguistic awareness and cultural sustainability.   Penelitian ini mengkaji bentuk-bentuk linguistik dan makna budaya yang tertanam dalam tradisi nyunat (khitan) masyarakat Sasak dari perspektif linguistik antropologi. Kajian ini menanggapi kesenjangan penelitian, di mana tradisi khitan di Indonesia sebagian besar telah diteliti dari sudut pandang antropologis dan kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan, mengklasifikasikan, dan menafsirkan leksikon-leksikon ritual sebagai penanda budaya yang merepresentasikan identitas, peran sosial, dan nilai-nilai spiritual. Melalui metode kualitatif yang melibatkan observasi, wawancara, dan analisis dokumen yang didukung oleh rekaman audio–video, penelitian ini membangun taksonomi leksikon ritual yang dikategorikan ke dalam tiga domain semantik, yaitu berjap (‘bersiap’), begawe (‘mengadakan perayaan’), dan perebaq jengkis (‘menutup upacara’). Taksonomi ini menunjukkan bagaimana bahasa ritual mengorganisasi pengetahuan budaya dan mengodekan tatanan sosial. Secara teoretis, penelitian ini memperluas bidang linguistik antropologi dengan menunjukkan bagaimana leksikon ritual berfungsi sebagai sistem yang mempertahankan dan menegosiasikan makna budaya lintas generasi. Secara pedagogis, temuan penelitian ini menyoroti potensi integrasi leksikon ritual lokal ke dalam pendidikan berbasis warisan budaya, literasi budaya, dan program penceritaan digital untuk meningkatkan kesadaran linguistik dan keberlanjutan budaya.

Abstract

This study explores the ritual language system in the kepaten tradition of the Sasak community from the perspective of anthropological linguistics. It aims to identify the linguistic forms, cultural meanings, and value systems embedded in death ritual expressions. Language in this context is viewed not merely as a communicative tool but as a symbolic mechanism that structures social, spiritual, and moral behavior. Employing a qualitative–descriptive method through observation, interviews, and documentation, the research collected ritual lexicons analyzed using HBB, HBS, and HBSP techniques to construct taxonomies and semantic domains across three main stages: nyiepan ‘pre-burial’, nguburan ‘burial’, and suwahan ‘post-burial’. The findings reveal that each linguistic form conveys not only lexical meaning but also a triadic value system connecting human–human, human–nature, and human–God relationships. These values form the foundation of what this study terms language as moral ecology—a linguistic system that regulates ethical conduct and sustains communal harmony. From a pedagogical standpoint, the kepaten lexicons provide culturally grounded learning materials that can nurture solidarity, spirituality, and ecological care in character education. Overall, the study enriches anthropological linguistics by positioning ritual discourse as both a moral–ecological practice and a model for heritage-based pedagogy rooted in Sasak cultural wisdom.   Penelitian ini mengkaji sistem bahasa ritual dalam tradisi kepaten masyarakat Sasak melalui perspektif linguistik antropologis. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk lingual, makna budaya, dan sistem nilai yang terkandung dalam tuturan ritual kematian. Bahasa dalam konteks ini tidak dipandang semata sebagai alat komunikasi, melainkan sebagai mekanisme simbolik yang menstrukturkan perilaku sosial, spiritual, dan moral masyarakat. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif-deskriptif melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, penelitian ini menghimpun leksikon ritual yang dianalisis menggunakan teknik HBB, HBS, dan HBSP untuk membangun taksonomi dan domain semantik pada tiga tahap utama: nyiepan ‘pra-pemakaman’, nguburan ‘pemakaman’, dan suwahan ‘pasca-pemakaman’. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap bentuk lingual tidak hanya memuat makna leksikal, tetapi juga merepresentasikan sistem nilai triadik yang menghubungkan relasi manusia dengan sesama, manusia dengan alam, dan manusia dengan Tuhan. Nilai-nilai ini menjadi dasar dari konsep bahasa sebagai ekologi moral (language as moral ecology), yaitu sistem linguistik yang menata perilaku etis dan menjaga keharmonisan sosial. Dari sudut pandang pedagogis, leksikon kepaten dapat dijadikan sumber pembelajaran berbasis budaya yang menumbuhkan solidaritas, religiusitas, dan kepedulian ekologis dalam pendidikan karakter. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini memperkaya kajian linguistik antropologis dengan menempatkan wacana ritual sebagai praktik moral-ekologis sekaligus model pedagogi berbasis kearifan lokal masyarakat Sasak.
