Abstract

The research compared rascals in three Picaresque novels: Cannery Row, Candide or Optimism, and Don Quijote. It used Picaresque theories from Clarence Hugh Holman (1972), as well as Gustavo Pellon and Julio Rodriguez-Luis (1986), that specified rascal or rogue. This understanding explains how some Picaresque novels feature rascal characters who are silly, stupid, reckless, rude and have other negative traits, but they also have qualities of kindness, a good heart, and attentiveness hidden behind them. Mack and the boys, Candide, and Don Quijote are all depicted as rogues. The Picaresque element is used as a formula in the story to determine and exemplify rascal values. The researcher stated two problems related to Picaresque rascal: what are the similarities between Picaresque rascals in Cannery Row, Candide or Optimism, and Don Quijote? In addition, the purpose of this research is to identify Picaresque rascals in three objects. Furthermore, this research utilizes Ian Dey's (1993) literary criticism method, namely qualitative analysis. It is used to decipher the data of each object one by one and to obtain information about the Picaresque. The researcher then used Susan Bassnett's (1999) comparative method to compare topics. The similarities between the three objects are the results of this research. The similarities are rascals, education, instability of personality, criminality, and themes.  Keywords: Comparative Literature 1; Elements 2; Novel 3; Picaresque 4; Rascal 5

Abstract

Using Charles Sander Peirce's theory, this study examines the object, representation, and interpretant in the screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative research. Each of the triadic element is composed of three components. An object is denoted by an icon, which is a sign exhibiting a comparable appearance to its reference; an index, which signifies a connection between the representation and the object in terms of presence and occurrences; and a symbol, which is universally acknowledged through mutual agreement. Legisign, a sign in accordance with a general rule or code; qualisign, a sign perceived by quality; and sinsign, a sign based on actual shape or form, are all components of representation. The interpretant possesses rheme, which is a sign predicated on the interpreter's comprehension; dicent sign, which pertains to something that truly exists; argument, which comprises a justification for a given matter. The findings of this analysis indicate that the ring is of the utmost significance in the narrative of the film.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the intersection between comparative literature and adaptation studies, examining the theoretical frameworks and practical applications that underlie this fascinating field. By analysing the transformation of a classic work into various media, we will uncover the mechanisms of change and the cultural significance embedded in these adaptations. This article examines the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. A comparative analysis is conducted on the novel and film to identify significant changes that occurred in the adaptation process. These changes include the addition of scenes, character modifications, and changes to the plot. One of the main changes is the addition of a romantic element between Dracula and Mina, which is not present in the original novel. This change transforms the theme of gothic horror into a more nuanced tragic love story. The study concludes that the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula involves a number of significant changes that alter the meaning and experience of the narrative. Further research is needed to understand the motivations and impact of changes in the adaptation process, especially from a cultural and sociological perspective. In addition, a broader comparative study could be conducted by comparing different adaptations of Dracula to see the patterns of change that occur over time. It is also important to understand how changes in adaptation affect audience reception. Adaptation research methodology needs to be continuously developed by integrating digital humanities approaches and new technologies to provide a more comprehensive perspective. More systematic documentation of the decision-making process in adaptation is also needed to understand the factors that influence changes from novel to film, so as to provide deeper insight into the process of adapting literary works to visual media.
