Abstract

The elderly is someone who has entered retirement or is 60 years old and is characterized by a period of deterioration of body cells, including movement and memory, which can make an older person often feel anxiety or anxiety about the life that will be passed next. One way for anxiety to decrease or disappear is by doing deep breath relaxation therapy because it is considered adequate and accessible. Deep breath relaxation is done with a deep breath technique of approximately 5 seconds, then exhaling slowly. The purpose of this study was to identify the description of anxiety responses in older people who were given deep breath relaxation therapy. The research method uses a case study approach with 2 elderly subjects. Anxiety data was collected using interview sheets, observation sheets, and Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS) questionnaires. The results showed that subjects who were given a deep breath relaxation therapy intervention for 2 weeks with 6 meetings experienced a decrease in anxiety from moderate anxiety to mild anxiety; subject 1, with a middle anxiety score of 41, decreased to mild anxiety with a score of 24 while subject 2 experienced moderate anxiety with a score of 43 reduced to mild anxiety with a score of 27. It is hoped that what has been taught (deep breath relaxation) can be done regularly to maintain anxiety levels so that they can manage anxiety independently.

Abstract

Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demands placed on nursing students during clinical practice have necessitated a heightened level of professionalism. Paradoxically, this intensified clinical environment has also given rise to increased rates of depression among nursing students, compounding the preexisting challenges they face. This study is driven by the objective of investigating the correlation between coping strategies and depression among nursing students actively engaged in clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 373 nursing students participated in this cross-sectional study. The assessment of depression among the respondents was carried out using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Coping strategies were evaluated through the application of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief-COPE). The results yielded significant insights, with the coping strategy of reframing (p=0.009) demonstrating a noteworthy correlation with depression. In the realm of emotion-focused coping strategies, while the acceptance subscale (p=0.310) did not exhibit a significant correlation with depression, emotional support (p=0.037), venting (p=0.000), humor (p=0.000), and self-blame (p=0.003) all displayed notable correlations with depression. Furthermore, within the domain of avoidance coping, self-distraction (p=0.000), denial (p=0.008), substance use (p=0.000), and behavioral disengagement (p=0.000) subscales were also found to be significantly correlated with depression. These findings underscore the paramount importance of fostering adaptive coping strategies and emphasize the pivotal role of clinical instructors in preparing and bolstering students to effectively manage their emotional well-being during clinical practice, particularly within the challenging context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a psychological impact on the elderly. The elderly are prone to experiencing psychosocial problems or mental disorders when isolating themselves or withdrawing from community activities, one of which is the COVID-19 pandemic. They can feel lonely and depressed. Spirituality is needed by the elderly to face the pandemic. This study aims to determine the relationship between spirituality with depression and loneliness in the elderly. This research was conducted with a cross-sectional approach using a questionnaire on 142 elderly respondents. Research respondents were taken by purposive sampling technique. Based on the Spearman rank correlation test results, there is no relationship between spirituality scores and depression scores with a value of p=0.939 (p>0.05). There is a direct relationship between spirituality with a p-value of 0.00 (p <0.05). The correlation coefficient value between spirituality score and loneliness score is 0.306, which means that the higher the spirituality score, the higher the loneliness score with low relationship strength. Spirituality is not the only factor that can improve depression and loneliness in the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other aspects need to be identified to help overcome depression and loneliness in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: This study investigates Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in expecting mothers, a condition arising from prolonged inadequate energy and protein intake. Untreated CED poses health risks for both mothers and their unborn babies, including miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, low birth weight (LBW), and potentially stunting the child's growth. Despite existing goals, the incidence of CED in pregnant women remains above the target of 17.3%. Women with a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) less than 23.5 cm are considered at high risk. This research aims to identify factors contributing to the prevalence of CED among pregnant women in the Central Java and East Java regions. Methods: This study employs a mixed-methods approach, specifically a sequential explanatory design. A sample sized group of 124 participants was selected using simple random sampling. Questionnaires were distributed to healthcare facilities.  In-depth interviews were subsequently conducted to delve deeper into the causes of CED and existing efforts to address it within the chosen health centers.  Results: The final multivariate analysis revealed a significant association (p-value < 0.05) between CED in pregnant women and the following factors: income (p-value=0.018, OR=3), knowledge about CED (p-value=0.028, OR=2.7), dietary habit (p-value=0.015, OR=3.4), and food intake (p-value=0.007, OR=4). Conclusion: Food intake is a more dominant variable in relation to CED in pregnant women. Health workers are encouraged to continue enhancing health promotion efforts regarding nutritional intake for pregnant women and their families. In addition, community health centers should consistently support the provision of supplementary feeding programs for pregnant women through regular monitoring.
