Abstract

Unsaturated fatty acids in avocado oil can help reduce erythema brought on by prolonged UV-B exposure. The effectivity of sunscreen absorption into the skin will be enhanced by the use of isopropyl myristate (IPM) in nanoemulsion. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical characteristics and sunscreen effectiveness of avocado oil nanoemulsion (AVN) modified with IPM. 1% (FI), 3% (FII), and 5% (FIII) IPM variation were used to make AVN with 5% oil. The AVN were tested for physical characteristics such as organoleptic, pH, viscosity, rheology, particle size and polydispersity index (PI). The products were also tested for sunscreen effectivity by in vitro and Minimum Erythemal Dose (MED) method. The data obtained were analyzed statistically. The results showed that the AVN was pale yellow and clear with transmittance percentage were 96%. The rheogram showed that the products were newtonian. The pH values range were from 6.62 to 6.66; viscosity 1.65-1.84 dPa.s; particle size < 17 nm, zeta potential was in range of -30,54±1,72 to -37,85±3,11 and PI < 0.5 for all formula. In vitro SPF values were 16.43 ± 4.50 (FI), 16.27 ± 4.20 (FII) and 17.88 ± 3.20 (FIII) (p >0.05), and categorized as ultra protection. MED value were 12.28 ± 1.34 (FI); 12.51 ± 1.68 (FII); and 13.22 ± 1.84 (FIII) (p< 0.05) and categorized as maximum protection. Isopropyl myristate increased the sunscreen product's MED value without changing its physical characteristics.

Abstract

Avocado oil (AVO) is a natural source of many unsaturated fatty acids that can help protect the skin from harmful UV radiation. The high content of unsaturated fatty acids in avocado oil can affect product stability. One way to overcome the stability of avocado oil for topical preparation is by formulating it into a gel base using Carbopol 980. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical stability and SPF value of avocado oil nano-emulgel (NE) with variations of Carbopol 980 as a gel base for 28 days of storage. AVONE was made with 5% AVO and Carbopol 980 base variation of 0.5% (NE1), 1.0% (NE2;), and 1.5% (NE3.) AVONE was stored in a climatic chamber at 30° ± 2°C with RH 65% ± 5%. The samples were tested for physical and SPF values before storage on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using one-way Anova. The AVONE on organoleptic parameters were stable; the resulting colour is broken-white with a distinctive oil aroma and thick and homogeneous texture. The pH value ranged from 6.21 ± 0.02 - 7.21 ± 0.02, with all formulas stable during storage. The viscosity value ranged from 13.28±0.23 - 47.22±0.89 dPa.s; the viscosity of NE3 was stable during storage. Adhesion and spreadability showed good ability to adhere to the skin. The SPF values ranged from 8.95±0.43 – 22.41±0.21, and NE3 was stable during storage. Avocado oil nano-emulgel with Carbopol 980 concentration of 1.5% was stable during storage.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease that commonly affects elderly (≥60 years) populations and significantly impacts patients' quality of life due to long-term pharmacotherapy and disease complications. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) has been recognized as an effective pharmacist-led intervention to optimize medication use and improve clinical outcomes. However, its integration with environmental sustainability principles remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Green Pharmacy-based MTM education on quality of life among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted among 84 elderly patients at primary healthcare centers in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, from September to October 2025. The application of rational medication principles, as emphasized in Green Pharmacy-based MTM education, plays a crucial role in minimizing adverse effects and optimizing therapeutic outcomes. Quality of life was assessed before and after the intervention using the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQoL) questionnaire, accompanied by clinical monitoring of random blood glucose levels. The results showed that the intervention significantly improved quality of life compared to control (p<0.05). These findings highlight the potential of sustainable, pharmacist-led educational interventions to enhance diabetes management and patient-centered outcomes.
