Abstract

This study investigated whether extensive and comprehensive oral recasting is more effective than explicit correction. The primary focus was on how feedback affects English language learning. Recasts that are intensive are defined as those that receive feedback on a single topic, whereas extensive feedback is defined as errors on multiple subjects and domains. Four groups of ten students each were formed from forty students from a Senior High School. A general English book called Think 4, a storybook, and an English grammar book called Grammar in Use were the study's instruments. In line with the study's aims, they were given feedback that was either explicit or implicit, thorough or in-depth. In accordance with the study's aims, they were given feedback that was either explicit or implicit, long or brief. The findings showed that there wasn't much of a difference between students who got implicit and explicit feedback. Additionally, it was discovered that every technique had the same effect on students' capacity to communicate.

Abstract

The background of this research is because students of SMA N 3 Medan have weak writing skills in analytical exposition texts due to lack of mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and writing structure. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy in learning to write analytical exposition texts for students in grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Medan. This study addresses the problem of students' difficulties in writing analytical exposition texts, particularly in organizing ideas and understanding text structures. The study employs a quantitative experimental method with a true experimental design, involving two groups: an experimental class taught using the TTW strategy and a control class taught through conventional methods. The research subjects were 72 class XI students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan who were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure students' writing performance. The research uses statistical data analysis techniques including normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests. The findings show a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group. The mean post-test score for the experimental group was 84.13, exceeding the control group's mean score of 71.2. In addition, the data collected for this study showed normal distribution. Based on the analysis conducted using the t-test, Tcount = 3.11 was obtained at a significant level of α = 5%, dk (n-1) = 14, so (15-1) = 14, so Ttable = 1.76. It can be concluded that Tcount > Ttable (3.11> 1.76).  The implication of the results of this study is that it shows that the Think Talk Write strategy can be widely adopted by English teachers as a more effective writing learning method than conventional methods to improve students' ability to write analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the finding that students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan often make mistakes in using inflectional affixes when writing, especially in the placement of affixes that can affect the quality of writing and message delivery. This research aims to analyze the misuse of inflexional affixes in analytical exposition texts written by SMA N 3 Medan students. Qualitative descriptive method is used to identify the types of errors and determine the dominant types of errors. The subjects of this study were 25 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Medan, but only 9 students' written works were analyzed as samples to obtain data on inflectional affixes errors. Data were obtained through the analysis of students' analytical exposition texts, with the results showing that the dominant error occurred in the addition category at 72%, followed by misformation at 20%, omission at 8%, and misordering at 10%. The most frequent errors were found in the use of morphemes such as -s, -es, -ly, and -ed that did not fit the rules. The findings show that students' lack of understanding of the function of inflectional affixes affects the quality of their writing, especially in delivering messages effectively. This research provides practical implications for teachers to improve teaching related to inflectional affixes and for students to better understand the importance of correct affix usage in writing texts. In addition, the results of this study can be a reference for other researchers who are interested in analyzing language errors, especially related to inflectional affixes, to support the development of more effective English learning methods in the future.

Abstract

The term "ESP" refers to a method of teaching English for any possible goal. It addresses with determining the curriculum for a scenario where students are grouped as homogeneous and have a common set of requirements. Thus, the goal of this study is to investigate the state of ESP teaching and learning in a third-year graduate student class at the University of Murni Teguh, Department of Economics. The researcher makes an effort to determine whether the ESP method of teaching EFL is used in this particular class. In order to do this, a representative sample of 50 students was selected at random and joined by their ESP instructor, a specialist in the same department. Two study tools have been used to gather data: a structured interview with the teacher and a questionnaire for the students. Consequently, a quantitative and qualitative analysis has been conducted. The findings showed that students are taught in general English with little consideration for their academic and professional demands (once they are employed). Instead, there is a strong emphasis on learning economic concepts and translating brief texts into Arabic, the students' native tongue. The ESP teacher also mentioned how he sensed a need for particular "teacher training." The findings may help ESP teachers understand what is actually required in this particular situation. Therefore, depending on the needs of each specific subject, ESP approaches should be used to teach English.

Abstract

The program of Pengabdian Kepada Masysarakat (Public Community Service) is aimed the literacy improvement training for elementary and junior high school children aims to provide students as well as teachers with information assistance about the importance of literacy for the development of knowledge in Indonesian society. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students from the English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, HKBP Nommensen University with students from Czech University. The program of PKM Activity was started on July 25th, 2022, and ended on July 26th, 2022. It is very clear that the cause of the low literacy ability (in terms of reading) is the oral tradition that is still rooted in society. In addition, related to elementary schools, the school system still does not provide opportunities for literacy traditions to students. This also happened to students at SD and SMP HKBP Sidorame Medan. This problem is trying to be minimized by conducting community service programs related to literacy for elementary and junior high school students. The Project represents one of the important areas of development of reading literacy in school. The most positive feature is the fact that there are large numbers of identified target groups, not only students but also teachers. Teachers themselves should expose students to literacy. Literacy should become a culture.
