Abstract

Abstract

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that causes economic losses on chicken farms. A case was found on a farm in Rancaekek, Bandung Regency, where there was a one-year-old laying hen that stopped producing eggs, experienced decreased pectoral muscle mass, and had mild ataxia. The diagnosis was made by necropsy procedure and fecal examination. There were lesions in the small intestine, these lesions manifested as ballooning filled with orange mucus and the presence of petechial hemorrhages on the luminal wall and decreased pectoral muscle mass was found. A Fecal examination was performed using the floating method and the McMaster calculation. The results of the fecal examination revealed Eimeria sp. oocysts and Trichostongylus tenuis eggs. The diagnosis of this case is coccidiosis infection caused by two species of Eimeria sp., namely Eimeria maxima and Eimeria tenella. This infection has resulted in a nutritional deficiency, manifested by a decrease in pectoral muscle mass.

Abstract

Zoonotic bacterial diseases such as colibacillosis and salmonellosis in poultry affect animal health and productivity and pose a risk to human health. Sukahaji Bird Market in Bandung City is a high-traffic site for live poultry trading and close human-animal interaction, making it a potential hotspot for zoonotic disease transmission. This work aimed to improve poultry traders' knowledge on the bacterial zoonotic diseases and promote the application of basic biosecurity measures as a preventive effort. In this work, implementing methods involved three main stages namely pre-activity, main activity, and post-activity. The pre-activity stage involved coordinating with the market managers and institution partners, developing simple surveys, and preparing the educational materials (pamphlets and posters). The main activity was conducted through an interactive education approach, distribution of printed materials, survey completion, and the provision of hand sanitizer to support the hygiene practices. In the post-activity stage, the evaluation process was carried out throughout surviving 30 poultry traders to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to biosecurity. Results showed that 96.67% of traders were not aware of bacterial zoonotic diseases in poultry, while 93.3% were able to recognize clinical signs of sick birds. Furthermore, although most traders had implemented basic hygienic practices, their understanding of zoonotic diseases remained limited. Both printed educational media and the personalized approach have an effectiveness in enhancing awareness. Moreover, applying the community engagement activities could support the One Health strategy through integrating animal, human, and environmental approaches to control the zoonotic disease transmission in the traditional markets.

Abstract

Pullorum disease or Chalky feces, caused by Salmonella pullorum bacteria, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that significantly affects commercial poultry, particularly in developing countries. This study was aimed to report a case of pullorum disease in commercial layer chickens in Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. The diagnostic approach included clinical examination based on clinical signs, followed by pathological and microbiological identification. Clinical signs observed were lethargy, white diarrhea (chalky feces) and decreased egg production. Necropsy findings revealed pathological changes including hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, caseous masses in the caecum and joints, oophoritis and white nodules in the heart. Additional anatomy pathological findings included tracheal hyperemia and malacia in the brain. Bacterial isolation and identification were conducted from internal organs using MacConkey Agar, followed by Gram staining and biochemical tests including Kligler’s Iron Agar (KIA), Motility Indole Urea (MIU) and Simmons’s Citrate Agar. The results confirmed the presence of S. pullorum bacteria, characterized by non-motile, Gram-negative bacilli. These findings demonstrate that S. pullorum can cause systemic infection affecting multiple organs. Based on pathological and microbiological examinations, it was concluded that the disease case in the layer chicken samples was caused by chronic infection of S. pullorum. This report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and improved biosecurity measures to prevent outbreaks, reduce mortality rates and minimize economic losses in Chicken farming.
