Abstract

Arumbai Market in Ambon City, Maluku Province, is a central hub for the trade of fishery products, particularly groupers. This study aims to describe the origin of grouper catches and to identify the species and sizes of groupers marketed at Arumbai Market. Groupers, which belong to the family Serranidae, are the primary predators in coral reef ecosystems. Fish identification was conducted based on Allen's guide and verified through FishBase. The study was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023 using a survey method through direct observation and interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in tables and graphs. The results showed that groupers at Arumbai Market come from four main locations: Manipa (34.47%), Liang (26.81%), Latuhalat (24.26%), and Pulau Tiga (14.47%). Eight dominant species of groupers in this market are Variola albimarginata (44.64%), Cephalopholis miniata (20.60%), Epinephelus fasciatus (12.45%), Epinephelus ongus (6.44%), Cephalopholis urodeta (6.44%), Cephalopholis sonnerati (5.58%), Epinephelus areolatus (3.00%), and Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (0.86%). Grouper sizes vary, with Cephalopholis miniata having a maximum size of 27.1 cm and a minimum size of 19.9 cm. This study provides essential information on the origin of catches, species dominance, and sizes of groupers marketed, which can serve as a basis for better fishery management. These findings indicate a significant potential for grouper trade in the region and highlight the importance of sustainable management to preserve the continuity of coral reef ecosystems and grouper populations.

Abstract

The use of gill nets in fishing is a well-established practice among fishermen due to several factors including ease of material acquisition, simple operational techniques, relatively affordable costs, and high selectivity in catching fish of specific sizes. This study aims to describe the design of fishing gill nets in Inner Ambon Bay. The research was conducted at the Ambon Fisheries Training and Extension Center (BP) in April and May of 2024. The design and construction of surface gillnets for mackerel scad consist of mesh size (inches), fish body circumference, net length, hanging ratio, weights, and distance between floats and weights. The design of the surface gill net with a 2-inch mesh size and a 45% hanging ratio has proven to be effective in catching mackerel scad (Decapterus sp) ranging from 17 cm to 26 cm in length. The use of polyamide (PA) material for the net body provides the necessary strength and flexibility, while the float made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and lead weights ensures balanced distribution for optimal functioning in the water. A 45% hanging ratio provides an ideal balance between net length and fish trapping ability, avoiding nets that are too curved or stiff, which can reduce fishing effectiveness.

Abstract

The northern coastal waters of Ambon Island, particularly the area of Negeri Larike, serve as an important habitat for various economically and ecologically valuable reef fish species. Fishing activities using traditional drum traps (bubu gendang) are still practiced by local fishers as part of a small-scale, sustainable fishery. This study aims to analyze the catch characteristics of the bubu gendang operated in the northern waters of Ambon Island, particularly in the coastal area of Negeri Larike. The observed parameters include species composition, total length distribution, and bycatch rate. Data were obtained through direct observation of the catches from two traditional bubu units operated for one day, from 06:00 WIT to 06:00 WIT the following day, followed by species identification and biometric measurements. The results showed a total of 144 individual fish caught, comprising 20 species dominated by the families Acanthuridae (27.8%) and Chaetodontidae (22.2%). In terms of biomass, Calotomus carolinus contributed the highest (15.0%). Most of the fish caught were within the small to medium size range, with the highest average total length recorded in the Caesionidae family (23.5 cm). The bycatch rate was recorded at 32.7% by number of individuals and 18.2% by biomass. These findings indicate that the bubu gendang demonstrates good selectivity toward target species, although there remains a potential for capturing non-target species. This study provides technical recommendations for improving trap selectivity through the development of more environmentally friendly designs. It contributes scientific insights for evaluating the effectiveness of traditional fishing gear and supports sustainable fisheries management strategies based on coral reef ecosystem approaches in coastal areas.

Abstract

Language that develops within coastal communities is the result of long-term interaction between humans and the marine environment. In fishermen’s lives, language functions not only as a means of communication, but also as a medium for storing ecological knowledge, shaping cultural identity, and transmitting social values. This study aims to analyze the role of language in the lives of Maluku fishermen, particularly in relation to the formation of coastal community identity, the function of language in fishing activities, and the existence of oral traditions as part of maritime cultural heritage. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review and conceptual analysis of various forms of language use in traditional fisheries. The data consist of fishermen’s vocabulary, terms for naming marine spaces, and forms of oral traditions such as folklore, mantras, pantun, and maritime proverbs found in coastal communities. The results show that the language of Maluku fishermen has broad functions in coastal community life. It serves not only as a technical communication tool in fishing activities, but also as a marker of community identity and a medium for storing ecological knowledge related to marine conditions, fishing seasons, and traditional fishing strategies. In addition, language functions as a medium of cultural expression reflected in various forms of oral traditions passed down through generations. From an ecolinguistic perspective, the marine lexicon used by fishermen represents the reciprocal relationship between humans and the maritime environment. Therefore, documenting and preserving fishermen’s language is an important step in maintaining maritime cultural identity while sustaining local ecological knowledge that supports sustainable marine resource management.

Abstract

The Maluku Sea possesses exceptionally rich marine biodiversity and serves as the primary source of livelihood for coastal communities. This richness is reflected not only in economic aspects but also in the local knowledge system that has been passed down through generations through language, particularly in the lexicon of fish and marine biota. This study aims to describe the forms of fish and marine biota lexicons used by the people of Maluku and to reveal the ecological knowledge embedded within them. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach from an ethnolinguistic perspective. Data in the form of local terms for fish and marine biota were collected through documentation, interviews, and observations of fishing communities in the coastal areas of Maluku. The findings indicate that the naming of fish and marine biota is not arbitrary; rather, it represents the community’s observations regarding color, body shape, behavior, habitat, seasonal occurrence, and the economic value of certain species. In addition, variations in fish names were identified across different coastal regions, reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of Maluku communities. These lexicons function not only as tools of communication but also as repositories of traditional ecological knowledge that are essential for the sustainable management of marine resources. Therefore, the documentation of fish and marine biota lexicons constitutes a strategic effort toward preserving the language, culture, and local knowledge of the coastal communities of Maluku.

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are among the most biodiverse marine ecosystems and play a crucial role in supporting tropical fisheries productivity and the sustainability of coastal resources. Monitoring the biomass of target fish is an important indicator for assessing ecosystem condition and the effectiveness of marine protected area management. This study aimed to analyze species richness and the biomass structure of target fish in the Food Security and Tourism Sub-Zone of the Regional Marine Conservation Area (KKLD) of South Misool, Southwest Papua. Data were collected from May 8 to 16, 2025, at 12 sites using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method at depths of 5 m and 12 m. The results recorded 80 species belonging to 15 families, with species richness ranging from 22 to 43 species per site. The total biomass of target fish reached 1665.62 tons/km², ranging from 24.97 to 640.03 tons/km², with the highest biomass observed at Magic Mountain and the lowest at Fyabya. Biomass distribution was strongly influenced by the presence of large-bodied and schooling species. Correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between species richness and fish biomass (p > 0.05), suggesting that biomass is primarily driven by body size and the dominance of particular species rather than species number. Overall, the target fish community in this area is considered to be in good condition and supports sustainable coral reef ecosystem management.
