Abstract

Textbooks are one of the most important media in the English teaching-learning process. It plays a critical role for students and teachers in easing the teaching and learning processes. Using textbooks, teaching and learning processes are expected to run better, because teachers and students are facilitated in building an understanding of the ongoing material. Many subjects are presented in textbooks, such as small things done in daily life, food, movies, or culture from within and outside the country. This research aims to investigate Indonesian culture presented in the sixth-grade elementary English textbook entitled "Stairway: A Fun and Easy English Book.” This study focuses on analyzing one aspect of culture: products represented in the form of images and texts. This study used critical discourse analysis as the research design. The data in this study were obtained by reading the textbook, and the results showed that the textbook provides several Indonesian cultural products. Thus, the textbook writer introduced products commonly produced by Indonesians. Various products are shown by the book provider/writer through images and texts that refer to or discuss particular cultural aspects. There were four visual images and one text, indicating that the image belonged to the cultural aspect of the product. The pictures and text revealed cultural aspects in the form of buildings, clothes (uniform), food, and sports (traditional martial arts).

Abstract

The use of mobile applications in the classroom offers the possibility of future innovation and can facilitate the teaching and learning process anywhere. Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) technology makes learning easier for students (Kukulska & Viberg, 2018). This research aims to determine students' responses to the application of MALL in learning reading comprehension in the classroom. This research uses a qualitative case study method, by conducting observations, interviews and documentation in data collection carried out at one of the high schools in Bekasi. This research uses thematic analysis data analysis theory developed by Braun and Clarke (2006) which consists of six steps. Based on the data collected, it was found that teachers have used Webtoon MALL as a fun learning strategy to help students learn English in reading sessions. Students respond well to this approach. The MALL used in learning to help students with reading comprehension is a Webtoon application that gets enthusiasm from students as a fun learning model.

Abstract

Students' problems with fear of speaking a foreign language are usually related to the atmosphere built in the classroom. The educator's performance usually dominates the atmosphere in the classroom. This research aims to explore teacher's attitudes toward students' speaking anxiety in the classroom and what a teacher does to help students overcome their anxiety. Qualitative was used as a research design. This research involves one teacher and four students in junior high school. This research used interviews and observation to collect the data according to the theory of Zukani, N. M. (2018). The data analysis is adapted from the thematic analysis by Braun & Clark (2006). The findings showed that teachers had a very positive attitude toward the phenomenon of students' speaking anxiety in EFL classrooms. This research can be applied to every teacher in overcoming student problems when students have problems in speaking such as being afraid to speak or worrying about being wrong. This can be used to increase the effectiveness of learning in the classroom and can make students play a more active role because of the reduced anxiety possessed by students.

Abstract

Listening class has been considered as a class with very difficult skills. Therefore, this study aims to explore a teacher and students’ experiences in employing songs as a media for learning listening comprehension for students in senior high school. This research employed interview study design to explore how teachers' and students’ experiences on the practice of using song as media in the listening classroom. Interviews and documentation were used to gather the data then it was analyzed using thematic analysis based on teacher’s experiences and students' perception. Based on teacher’s experiences, this study found that song-mediated had strong pedagogical value; easy implementation and improving students’ listening skills. In addition, the students had advantages in pronunciation skills. However, students still do not know how to write the lyrics correctly and understand the meaning of the songs.

Abstract

Siswa tidak hanya bisa mengandalkan pembelajaran dalam kelas, oleh karena itu mereka butuh pembelajaran tambahan di luar kelas. Fokus utama dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi pengalaman siswa ketika latihan mendengar pada pembelajaran mandiri melalui YouTube Shorts. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatid dengan analisis interview sebagai desain peneletian. Empat mahasiswa berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Data dikumpulkan melalui diskusi grup dan jurnal reflektif. Analisis tematik digunakan dalam penelitian untuk menganalisis koleksi data. Penemuan-penemuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa melakukan evaluasi mandiri untuk latihan mendengarkan dengan menyalakan terjemahan, melihat kamus, dan mencari penjelasan pada kolom komentar. Mereka juga meninggalkan komentar sebagai evaluasi mandiri. Kesimpulannya, mereka tidak hanya berlatih mendengarkan, tetapi mereka secara tidak sadar berlatih membaca dan juga menulis.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap pembelajaran membaca melalui strategi membaca berpasangan (PRS). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain penelitian studi kasus. Observasi dan wawancara digunakan untuk memperoleh data. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis tematik untuk analisis data, yang melibatkan enam langkah. Partisipan penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII salah satu SMP di Subang. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi siswa setelah menggunakan PRS dalam membaca memberikan respon yang positif; mereka merasa senang dan antusias. Selain itu, penggunaan PRS dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami teks dan mempermudah proses belajar membaca. Kesimpulannya, PRS dapat membantu siswa dalam proses pembelajaran pemahaman membaca siswa. Selain itu, penelitian ini merekomendasikan agar peneliti selanjutnya menggunakan materi atau jenis teks yang berbeda di kelas membaca.

Abstract

The study investigates how the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy could be used  to facilitate the development of students’ critical reading skills in the context of narrative texts and explores students’ responses to its implementation in small group discussions. The research was motivated by the need for more structured and student-centered strategies to enhance reading comprehension in senior high school settings. Employing a qualitative Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, the study was conducted in an 11th-grade class at a private senior high school in Karawang, Indonesia. Data were gathered through classroom observations and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), then analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings show that the teacher played a pivotal role in introducing QAR categories and guiding students in applying them through collaborative learning. The students demonstrated increased confidence, deeper comprehension, and greater motivation to engage with texts critically. The study concludes that QAR is an effective strategy to promote critical reading skills, support active student participation, and foster reflective classroom discussions. These results suggest that integrating structured questioning strategies such as the QAR into reading instruction can enhance both cognitive and affective dimensions of learning, especially when supported by consistent teacher facilitation and peer collaboration.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate rhetorical strategies for employing interactive meta-discourse aspects in the introductions of highly cited Scopus-indexed research publications from two separate academic fields: applied linguistics and electrical engineering. The study analyzed thirty Scopus-indexed journal articles from each of the two fields. To achieve the research purpose, the researchers employ a descriptive quantitative design with comparative corpus analysis. This research used Hyland's (2005) taxonomy, which consists of five subtypes of interactive metadiscourse: transition markers, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses, as the theoretical analysis. The findings indicate that both disciplines employ these features to establish coherence and cohesion; notable disparities arise in their distribution and rhetorical roles. Applied linguistics articles demonstrate a greater utilization of evidential and coding glosses, indicative of their narrative and intertextual focus. In contrast, articles on electrical engineering prominently utilize transition and endophoric markers, which signify a procedural and experimental methodology. This study illustrates the importance of genre awareness and epistemic tradition in academic writing instruction across several fields. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti strategi retoris dalam menggunakan meta-wacana interaktif pada bagian pendahuluan artikel jurnal yang terindeks Scopus yang bersitasi tinggi di bidang linguistik terapan dan teknik elektro. Studi ini menganalisis tiga puluh artikel jurnal terindeks Scopus dari setiap bidang. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan desain kuantitatif deskriptif dengan menganalisis korpus secara komparatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan taksonomi Hyland (2005), yang terdiri dari lima subtipe metawacana interaktif: pemarkah transisi, pemarkah bingkai, pemarkah endoforik, pembuktian, dan gloss kode, sebagai pisau analisis. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kedua disiplin ilmu tersebut menggunakan fitur ini untuk membangun koherensi dan kohesi secara bervariasi. Temuan perbedaan yang paling penting muncul dalam distribusi dan peran retoris mereka. Artikel linguistik terapan menunjukkan pemanfaatan yang lebih besar dari pemarkah pembuktian dan gloses kode, yang menunjukkan keduanya fokus terhadap naratif dan intertekstual mereka. Sementara itu, artikel teknik elektro secara mencolok menggunakan penanda transisi dan endoforik, yang menandakan metodologi prosedural dan eksperimental. Studi ini menggambarkan pentingnya kesadaran genre dan tradisi epistemik dalam pengajaran penulisan akademik di beberapa bidang.
