Abstract

Semantics is one of the linguistic branches which studies language meaning scientifically. The scopes of semantics come from two major sources, namely linguistics and philosophy which have attempted to explain meaning in natural language into three main ways, namely words, sentence and act of communication. The article is intended to describe meaning in language and its ambiguities in building human language communication. Based on the data analysis, it is found that the language meaning in building human language communication covers minimal unit of meaning and ambiguities. The minimal unit of meaning means the minimal sound of meaning which involves word or morphemes in morphology. Sentence is also including the smallest unit of meaning in syntax, while proposition and utterance belong to the minimal unit of meaning in semantics and pragmatics consecutively. Besides, the language meaning interpretation in language communication is traced by the ambiguity which means a pair of expression which has the same form but different interpretation in meaning. In this case, the ambiguity is grouped into lexical ambiguity and structural ambiguity.

Abstract

Innovation in teaching listening is urgently needed. This study resulted the questionnaire survey of students’ needs of listening subject. These results were compared to the students’ mid-term results and Basic Listening learning outcomes. The survey was completed by 100 first-year English Education students. The analysis and comparison were objected to find out the answers of these questions: what barriers obstructed the progress of the students’ listening skill? And what were the students’ listening skills needs? The study found that there is an interstice between students’ needs and the learning got in relating to listening comprehension. Hence, this study expected that the its findings can help to grant preferable understanding of the students’ needs and developing the curriculum properly.

Abstract

Bahasa digunakan oleh manusia dalam kehidupan sehari-hari untuk berkomunikasi, baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Agar pembelajaran bahasa menjadi mudah dipahami bagi pentur asing, pembelajaran bahasa pada BIPA membutuhkan pengetahuan bahasa yang baik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan mahasiswa penutur asing dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia dan pengajaran bahasa kedua dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia bagi penutur asing (BIPA). Studi ini menggunakan metodologi kualitatif. (1) wawancara, (2) kuesioner, dan (3) referensi buku adalah metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penutur asing melakukan kesalahan dalam pemilihan kata, penggunaan afiks, kesalahan dalam struktur kalimat, dan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dengan tidak efektif. Penelitian ini melibatkan dosen yang mengajar BIPA di Universitas Insan Budi Utomo Malang yang memiliki 6 mahasiswa asing dari berbagai negara sebagai mahasiwa BIPA. Pengajar harus mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi siswa asing agar mereka tidak mengalami kesulitan dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Selain itu, pengajar harus menemukan cara yang inovatif untuk mencegah siswa asing belajar bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat membantu guru menjadi lebih sadar akan kesalahan ini karena dengan mengidentifikasi kesalahan yang bermasalah, guru mampu menghubungkan konsep dasar kalimat dengan apa yang mereka pahami tentang linguistik, bahasa, dan pengajaran BIPA.
