Abstract

In today’s digital era, emojis are widely used in online communication, yet their role remains debated. whether only as decorative symbols or as linguistic elements that convey meaning and shape interpretation. This study investigates college students’ perceptions, usage, and syntactic patterns of emojis in WhatsApp messages Using a descriptive qualitative method with questionnaires, interviews, and digital material from college students in fourth-semester of English Education students at Universitas Nias, the study finds that college students view emojis as meaningful linguistic elements rather than mere decorations. Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions of promotional content for Baho Gamira Recreational Tourism on TikTok, focusing on the integration of animated storytelling in tourism marketing. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and online surveys involving 30 students to analyze the influence of visual narrativity and perceived authenticity on travel intentions. The findings identify a significant "Engagement-Trust Paradox," where creative animation achieved a 100% engagement rate in capturing attention but simultaneously triggered a profound "Trust Gap." Approximately 70% to 90% of participants expressed skepticism regarding the site's physical reality, perceiving animation as a tool that potentially masks logistical deficiencies or exaggerates natural beauty. Furthermore, 75% of respondents felt hindered from visiting due to a critical "Informational Gap" regarding precise location tags, road accessibility, and facility costs. This research concludes that for emerging destinations, creative digital narration must be harmonized with "aesthetic transparency" and factual documentation to convert online engagement into physical visits. Practically, the study recommends adopting a hybrid content strategy that integrates User-Generated Content (UGC) and real-life footage to bridge the gap between digital inspiration and logistical reality, ensuring that the visual "vibe" is supported by verifiable facts to reduce the perceived risk for potential visitors. Keywords: TikTok Marketing, Animated Storytelling, Student Perception, Digital Tourism, Trust Gap.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of self-directed learning (SDL) strategies on students' reading comprehension at PEMBDA 2 Gunungsitoli Private Junior High School. The background of this study shows that students experience difficulties in understanding reading texts, which has a negative impact on their academic development. The research method used was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design involving two groups: an experimental group using the SDL strategy and a control group using conventional methods. The results showed a significant increase in students' reading comprehension skills in the experimental group compared to the control group. The average pretest score of the experimental group was 43.47 and increased to 89.47 on the posttest, while the control group only increased from 36.27 to 48.13. The t-test showed a significance value (p 0.05), indicating the effectiveness of the SDL strategy in improving reading comprehension. In addition, the N-Gain value for the experimental group was 0.814 (high category), while the control group was only 0.185 (low category). The conclusion of this study is that the application of the SDL strategy significantly improves students' reading comprehension skills, creating a more independent, enjoyable, and meaningful learning experience. This study recommends the use of the SDL strategy in English teaching at the junior high school level as an effective method for improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate translation loss and gain in the translation of Nias cultural jewelry terms into Indonesian and English. A qualitative research design was employed, using museum books and catalogues from Museum Pusaka Nias as data sources. Data were analyzed through descriptive and comparative qualitative methods to identify instances of loss and gain in both target languages. The results revealed nine instances of gain, mostly involving the addition of descriptive words such as "golden," "silver," "ivory," or "battle" to clarify meaning for non-Nias readers. Loss occurred in five cases, primarily due to omissions of gender, cultural specificity, or symbolic elements, such as the absence of the word "durian" in English translations. The study highlights the challenges of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural translation and emphasizes the importance of balancing accessibility and cultural fidelity in translating heritage terms

Abstract

This community service program was conducted to address young learners’ limited basic English vocabulary in a non-formal educational setting at PPA Krammer Hilina’a Church. The program aimed to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through deep learning–based interactive learning activities that emphasize meaningful understanding and active use of language. The participants were 23 students aged 9 to 11 years. The program was implemented in two cycles using planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Interactive activities such as gesture-based learning, picture-based tasks, pair work, and guided sentence construction were employed to support deep learning through repeated exposure and contextual practice. Quantitative data were collected through vocabulary tests, while qualitative data were obtained from observation sheets and field notes. The results indicated a significant improvement, as students in the Good and Very Good categories increased from 21.74% in Cycle 1 to 69.57% in Cycle 2, while students in the Poor and Very Poor categories decreased from 39.13% to 0%. These findings demonstrate that deep learning–based interactive learning activities effectively support basic English learning in community-based programs.
