Abstract

Makassar City has hospitals spread across several sub-districts, with categories of type A-E, but it is unknown whether the currently operating hospitals use the concept of a bioclimatic approach or only meet service standards from the aspect of medical needs. The aims of the study were: to determine the comfort level of the hospital (type A and type B), to formulate a hospital planning strategy with the concept of a bioclimatic approach to buildings through design recommendations. Case research methods (field studies and literature) and descriptive were used in the research. The results and discussion are: Several type A hospitals apply the bioclimatic concept based on an analysis of the level of comfort and service, for example the Wahidin Sudirohusodo hospital for the public, the Tabjuddin Chalid hospital for lepers and the Dadi hospital for mental disorders. Overall, each building has a different analysis and adjusts the comfort of space that is environmentally friendly, and has humanist characteristics towards outdoor space and the environment. Whereas type B hospitals, which apply bioclimatic concepts such as: Awal Bros Hospital, Labuang Baji Hospital, Anak Pertiwi Hospital, each of which has comfort from a unique spatial aspect, adjusts to the level of patient needs, creates good comfort and safety. For the planning strategy for the concept of Bioclimatic Architecture, it is desirable that the shape of the building must be sturdy, have many cavities, facades and the environment that affect the design of the building, the building is more environmentally friendly, comfortable and safe and more efficient in energy use.

Abstract

ABSTRACTGeneration Z faces significant psychological and social challenges in urban environments, particularly related to mental health stressors exacerbated by digital saturation and limited authentic social interaction. In response, this study proposes the design of a Gen-Z Collaboration Center in Makassar, Indonesia, using biophilic architectural principles. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study integrates site analysis, literature review, and comparative case studies to formulate a design that merges spatial functionality with natural elements. The resulting design consists of three core zones—mental wellness, creativity, and entrepreneurship—structured through a radial layout and symbolically inspired by the semicolon. Key features include natural lighting, vertical gardens, water features, organic materials, and flexible, adaptive spaces that promote emotional resilience, social connection, and sustainable urban living. By applying Terrapin Bright Green's biophilic design patterns, the center serves not only as a collaborative environment but also as a healing urban ecosystem. This research contributes to urban design practices by offering a youth-centered, sustainable, and psychologically responsive public architecture model for tropical cities.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study explores the application of biomimicry in the architectural design of an Oceanarium in Makassar City, a coastal metropolis with significant marine biodiversity. Positioned at the intersection of tourism, education, and conservation, the Oceanarium aims to respond to ecological degradation and the lack of integrated marine educational facilities. Drawing inspiration from natural forms such as coral reefs and ocean waves, the design incorporates fluid geometries, transparent materials, and adaptive spatial programming to promote environmental integration and user immersion. Methodologically, the research integrates site analysis, literature review, comparative international case studies, and conceptual sketching to formulate a contextual design strategy. The building features multiple zones, including public, educational, recreational, and conservation areas, connected through a visitor circulation system that mimics ocean currents. Biomimetic principles are applied to enhance thermal comfort, natural ventilation, and environmental resilience. The results indicate that biomimicry enhances architectural performance both aesthetically and functionally. It facilitates sustainable building practices, fosters public engagement, and aligns with local cultural and ecological contexts. The Oceanarium emerges as not only an iconic architectural landmark but also a living laboratory for marine education and environmental stewardship.
