Abstract

Semiotics, which is the science of signs, has become an increasingly interesting interdisciplinary area of study. As such, semiotics can also be used as both structural and pragmatic approach for translation studies, especially for studies in which meanings are difficult to comprehend including symbolic texts. This paper aims to uncover the role of semiotics in the translation of symbolic languages, especially religious texts. The study employs descriptive qualitative method to describe and interpret the data in the form of an analysis of symbolic text translation. This is to uncover the various attitudes and perspectives about the roles of semiotic science in the translation of religious texts. The findings of this study indicate that the semiotic perspective is able to reveal the dimensions of referential or conceptual meaning of the symbols through the appearance of a supplementary component, which connects literal and figurative meanings conventionally. This effort is carried out through the use of structural semiotic analysis tools, namely by exploring the relationships between symbolic meanings, both syntagmatically and paradigmatically.

Abstract

Morphological process is a linguistic process that forms words. The process emphasized two main methods namely word formation and derivation. The derivation is used to form new words, by combining affixes. The derivational morpheme is added to the root of the word and generates new words and meanings. This research aims to explore derivational morphology in audio-visual mode. The data in this study was examined using morphological theories based on Fromkin’s theory. This research used a descriptive qualitative method by observing and taking note of the transcript of videos and continued by analysing the data; the data sources were taken from YouTube videos of BBC news. The result shows ten types of derivational morphology; nine can be found, and one new type of derivational morphology has been discovered. This study implies not only the detailed morphological process of affix analysis but also the grammatical categories of words and meanings

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Balinese verb 'to feel' can be expressed through various lexicons, which have the same field of meaning, namely physical pain in the limbs. Using the MSA (Natural Semantics Metalanguage) approach it can be revealed that each lexicon has a different meaning, even though they are on the same meaning field. This happens because the semantic features of every lexicon can be described through an in-depth study of metalanguage, namely by revealing the characteristics of its semantic primes so that even subtle differences in meaning can be mapped. The NSM theory is able to discern subtle differences between meanings, and so support the postulate, which is one form for one meaning and one meaning expressed by a single lexicon. Abstract

Religious symbol is the generic word for all kinds of religious signs of the divine. It includes myths and religious narratives, theological ideas, particular notions such as karma or sin which are defined in one or more symbol systems, religious acts such as liturgies or private meditations that move through and overlay various symbol systems, as well as architectural and artistic symbols with religious content, books, songs, devotional objects, and the like. Generally, it can be referred to a religious object and can bear a religious meaning. This study aims to identify the meaning of a contextualized religious symbol in the Bali Church which is known as ‘the dancing cross’. The theory applied in this study is semiotic theory which in this case is structural semiotics. The source of the data are texts that discuss about the cross symbol as well as the results of interviews with the creator of the dancing cross symbol, Nyoman Darsane. This study confirms that the dancing cross, which is widely used by Christians who are members of the Protestant Christian Church in Bali is considered as the product of regionalization or contextualization of the cross which is the crux of Christian life and worship. The shape of the dancing cross is transformed from the universal shape of the cross which is consisted of two bars leading to a T-shaped cross which base stem is longer than the other three arms but crooked at the bottom like a dancer who is in left agem position. The results of the analysis through the utilization of structural semiotics in terms of syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations revealed some important points namely the contrastive meaning of the cross before and after the time of Jesus Christ as the sign of shame which covers a curse, a stumbling block and foolishness and the sign to be glorified which covers salvation victory and obedience. Other important points to be revealed are the contextual shape of the cross that can be aligned as a dancer who is in left agem position and the contextual meaning of the cross which leads to the sign of obedience of God’s people or the disciples to carry or dance the cross in accordance with the example given by Jesus Christ.

Abstract

Language functions as a structured system of conventional vocal symbols utilized for communication. Human beings, being inherently social, reside within communities that are defined by language, culture, and traditions. In contemporary times, many individuals employ multiple languages for communicating with those around them. Sociolinguistics delves into the intersection of language and society, investigating the intricate relationship between the two. An intriguing sociolinguistic phenomenon observed within societies is bilingualism or multilingualism, which signifies proficiency in more than one language by an individual. The objective of this study is to elucidate the patterns, categories, and underlying reasons for code-mixing found in Boy William's YouTube channel. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the researchers employed techniques like active listening and note-taking to gather the necessary data. The results reveal that, within a 4.50-minute duration of Boy William's YouTube content, numerous instances of code-mixing manifest in the conversations taking place. It is evident through a comprehensive data analysis, which all point to the code-mixing presence.
