Abstract

Background: Robusta (Coffea canephora) is one type of coffee widely cultivated in Indonesia and is one of the leading commodities. Coffee seeds include seeds that have a long dormancy period that inhibits the germination process. Breaking dormancy can be done by several methods, one of which is soaking in natural growth regulators. Soaking treatment with natural growth regulators can be combined with soaking time treatment to break dormancy. This study aimed to determine the combination of natural growth regulator treatment and the right soaking time for Robusta coffee seed germination. Methods: This research is a 3-repeat Complete Factorial Randomized Design Experiment with the first factor of natural growth regulators type, which consists of 4 levels, namely: Z0 = control; Z1 = coconut water; Z2 = onion extract and Z3 = bamboo shoots, and the second factor is the length of soaking which consists of 3 levels, namely P1 = 12 hours; P2 = 24 hours and P3 = 36 hours. Results: Natural growth regulators' treatment of shallot extract with 24 hours of soaking time gave the best results on all parameters. Conclusions: Using natural growth regulators from coconut water, shallots, and bamboo shoots with several soaking times affects all parameters observed, both in single and combined administration.

Abstract

Organic farming is gaining attention worldwide because it is healthier. Pak choy plants (Brassica chinensis L.) have various benefits and are widely consumed by the public. Roots are plant organs that function in holding the plant up and absorbing water and nutrients into the plant body. Many pak choy plants are cultivated using a hydroponic system. Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) can be a nutritional alternative for plants that are cultivated hydroponically but organically. This research aims to determine the effect of concentration and interval of application of liquid organic fertilizer on the hydroponic wick system on pak choy plants. The research was carried out from August to September 2022 at Green House Emak Farm and Hydroponic Wadungasri, Waru, Sidoarjo Regency. This research is a factorial experiment with two factors arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is NASA liquid organic fertilizer nutrient concentration with 4 treatment levels (5, 10, 15, 20 ml/L), while the second factor is the time interval for administering liquid organic fertilizer which consists of 3 treatment levels (3, 5, and once every 7 days). Control treatment using AB mix nutrition. Each treatment was repeated 3 times and used 4 plant samples. The results of the research showed that the combination of liquid organic fertilizer treatment with a concentration of 10 ml/L and at intervals of once every 3 days had a real impact on the observation parameter of fresh root weight of 11.07 grams. The interval treatment for applying liquid organic fertilizer had a significant effect on the root length parameters of pak choy plants, namely 10.79 cm.

Abstract

The awareness of the negative impact of conventional farming and its safety have increased society’s perception of organic farming and its product. Unfortunately, the level of knowledge and adoption of organic farming practices among farmers are still low due to the assumption that organic farming is hard to implement. Ponorogo Organic Farming Community is a farming community that tries to adopt an organic farming system and has produced paddy and several horticultural crops cultivated organically. It was identified that the community had not yet applied the use of natural plant growth regulators (PGR) in their practice. Therefore, an agricultural extension activity was organized to share the knowledge on how to prepare an onion extract natural PGR. A survey was also performed to understand the level of knowledge and adoption of the participant. The questionnaire showed that most of the participants had not ever applied natural PGR even though had already heard about them before. Therefore, this program was of relevancy to improve the knowledge of the participant on organic way of farming particularly on the utilization of natural PGR.

Abstract

Chili is one of the vegetable commodities that is often consumed by people in Indonesia. The demands of chili will increase along with population and industrial development in Indonesia. The rising demand for chili will increase the use of chemical fertilizers, especially Urea and NPK. Efforts to reduce the use of excess chemical fertilizers are to use biofertilizers and biochar. Biofertilizers function to provide nutrients to replace chemical fertilizers while biochar is a soil ameliorant material that can bind nutrients and water in the soil. The application of biological fertilizers and biochar is expected to improve the chemical, biological and physical properties of the soil so as to provide media and nutrients for plant growth. In addition, the purpose of this study was to obtain the best combination dose of biochar and biofertilizer on the growth and yield of red chili. This study used a factorial randomized group design (RAK). The first factor is the dose of biofertilizer (Y) consisting of 3 levels, namely 6 l/ha, 8 l/ha and 10 l/ha. The second factor is the dose of biochar (B) consisting of 4 levels, namely 6 tons/ha, 8 tons/ha, 10 tons/ha and 12 tons/ha. Abstract

Optimization of anthocyanin pigment extraction from butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) is an important focus to increase the efficiency of obtaining valuable active compounds. This study marks an initial approach in the application of Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) using 0.75% aquadest-tartaric acid solvent, with the hope of producing more stable anthocyanins. The main objectives of this study were to identify the effect of the solvent-material ratio, extraction duration, and MAE power level on anthocyanin levels (mg/L) through the One-Factor-At-a-Time (OFAT) method. The results showed that the optimal treatment was obtained at condition P17, with a solvent-material ratio of 1:15, an extraction time of 15 minutes, and an MAE power of 450 watts, which produced an anthocyanin level of 33.89 ± 0.47 mg/L. These findings confirm that increasing the solvent-material ratio to the optimal point contributes to increasing anthocyanin recovery. However, excessive MAE time and power can cause pigment degradation. The optimal ratio variables were found to be in the range of 1:15 to 1:25, extraction time 9–15 minutes, and MAE power 270–450 watts. This study is expected to be the basis for further optimization using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) method which allows for deeper analysis of the interactions between variables.
