Abstract

Background: Hard Arabica coffee seeds cause slow germination, but this can be accelerated by increasing their viability through seed priming techniques. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of concentration and duration of immersion in an organic priming solution extracted from moringa leaves on germination results and to identify the appropriate concentration and duration of immersion. Methods: This study was conducted from October to December 2024 at the Greenhouse in Sidorejo Village, Krian District, Sidoarjo, and the Production Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur. The study involved two treatment factors applied to Arabica coffee seeds: the concentration of the organic priming solution made from moringa leaf extract and the soaking duration. Results: The combination of treatment factors—concentration of moringa leaf extract solution and soaking duration—showed a significantly higher number of normal seedlings compared to abnormal seedlings, dead seeds, hard seeds, and fresh seeds. Conclusions: The optimal concentration of moringa leaf extract solution is 12%, and the optimal soaking duration is 38 hours

Abstract

[EFFECTIVENESS OF SEED COATING ON EXPIRED ‘BARA’ BIRD’S EYE CHILI (Capsicum frutescens L.) SEEDS]. The decline in physiological quality of bird’s eye chili (Capsicum frutescens L.) seeds due to prolonged storage poses a significant challenge in horticultural crop production, particularly in ensuring the availability of high-quality seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of seed coating using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and humic acid in combination with Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing the viability and vigor of aged ‘Bara’ chili seeds. The experiment was conducted from March to June 2025 at the laboratory, field, and greenhouse facilities of the UPT for Rice and Palawija Seed Development, Singosari, Malang, East Java. A factorial completely randomized design (CRD) was employed with two factors: type of coating material (CMC, humic acid, and CMC + humic acid) and PGPR dosage (10 g and 20 g). The observed variables included maximum growth potential, germination rate, vigor index, and seedling growth rate. The results indicated that treatment with 1% humic acid + 20 g PGPR yielded the highest maximum growth potential and germination rate (100%), while the combination of 1% humic acid + 10 g PGPR produced the highest vigor index (33.33%) and growth rate (5.89%/day). The application of organic coating materials combined with PGPR was proven effective in restoring the physiological quality of aged chili seeds. These findings can be implemented as a seed invigoration strategy to extend the shelf life of horticultural seeds and improve seedling establishment under field conditions, thereby supporting sustainable crop production systems. Abstract

Shallot is a horticultural commodity that is always needed for consumption and has high economic value. However, shallot production in East Java has decreased due to the low quality and quantity of shallot seeds. This study aims to determine the effect of concentration and frequency of paclobutrazol application on the growth and yield of shallot. This research was conducted in Sambigede Village, Sumber Pucung Subdistrict, Malang Regency in January-May 2024. The research was arranged using a Split Plot Design with 3 replication. The main plots were paclobutrazol concentrations: 50 ppm, 100 ppm, 150 ppm, and 200 ppm. The subplots were the frequency of paclobutrazol application: 1 time, 2 times, and 3 times. The combination of paclobutrazol concentration of 100 ppm and application frequency of 1 time gave the best results in inhibiting the vegetative phase, increasing tuber dry weight per clump, harvest index, and chlorophyll content. The frequency of paclobutrazol application did not significantly affect the fresh weight of tubers per clump, fresh weight of tubers per plot and dry weight of tubers per plot, but paclobutrazol concentration of 100 ppm affected the fresh weight of tubers per clump. Keywords: Bulbs, Harvest, Paclobutrazol, Shallot, Vegetative.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from kepok banana peels on the growth and yield of white oyster mushrooms under different substrates. The study was performed under factorial completely randomized design (4 x 4) with two factors. First factor was substrate (sawdust + rice husk) composition consisting of four levels with 25% to 100% sawdust. Second factor was concentration of LOF consisting of four levels (0; 100; 150; and 200 mL/L). Observation variables included early appearance of fruit bodies, number of caps, cap diameter, and fresh weight. The experimental data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by HSD test at α = 5%. Results showed that interaction of substrate composition and concentration of LOF significantly affected the early appearance of fruit bodies and number, diameter, and fresh weight of caps at harvest period 1 and 2. Substrate composition (50% sawdust + 50% rise husk) and concentration of LOF 200 mL/L resulted the highest fresh harvest weight with a total 249.70 g/baglog for thre harvest periods. The results of this study confirm that proper substrate composition and LOF concentration is required to achieve optimal growth and yield of white oyster mushroom.

Abstract

Moringa is often referred to as the "miracle tree" due to its rich nutrient content and medicinal properties. The increasing demand for moringa seeds has highlighted the need for effective propagation methods; however, germination remains limited by the hard seed coats and prolonged dormancy periods. This gap underscores the importance of studying moringa, particularly in efforts to enhance germination success and initial growth. This study aims to evaluate the effects of various seed priming materials, soaking durations, and the interactions between different types of seed priming materials and soaking times on the vigor and viability of moringa seeds. The research was conducted in the Biotechnology Laboratory and greenhouse at the Faculty of Agriculture, National Development University "Veteran" East Java. This study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a factorial arrangement of two factors, comprising fifteen combinations and three replications. The first factor is the type of seed priming material (S), which includes Aqua Destillata, seaweed extract, coconut water, PEG 6000, and KNO3. The second factor is the soaking time for the priming solution (L), which consists of 12 hours, 24 hours, and 36 hours. Observations include germinability, maximum growth potential, growth rate, vigor index, and sprout weight. The combination treatment of PEG 6000 as the seed priming material with a soaking time of 12 hours yielded the highest average values for germination and maximum growth potential. A single treatment using PEG 6000 resulted in the highest average vigor index. Additionally, a single treatment with a soaking duration of 12 hours also produced the highest average vigor index. The results of this study can be recommended as optimal treatments to enhance the germination capacity and vigor of Moringa seeds.

Abstract

Longan fruit is in high demand; however, longan plants produce recalcitrant seeds, which are less resistant to drying and contain higher moisture levels than orthodox seeds. Recalcitrant seeds typically remain viable for only 3–5 days if not stored under optimal conditions. This study aimed to determine the optimal combination of organic storage media and storage duration for maintaining longan seed viability. The first factor was the type of organic storage medium (sawdust, cocopeat, and rice husk charcoal), and the second was the storage duration (7, 14, 21, and 28 days). The parameters observed included germination power, sprout length, sprout weight, maximum growth potential, and sprout root length. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed, and the data were analyzed using ANOVA. When significant effects were detected, a post-hoc BNJ test at the 5% level was conducted. The analysis revealed no significant interaction between storage media type and duration on any parameter. The storage medium had no significant effect, whereas storage duration significantly affected germination power, sprout length, and sprout weight, but not maximum growth potential or root length. Seeds stored for 7 days performed better than those stored for 28 days. Control seeds (without storage) exhibited the best overall results. This study suggests that longan seeds can be stored for up to 7 days while maintaining optimal viability, which is useful for seed distribution and commercial cultivation.

Abstract

Growth and production of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) are influenced by the quality of the planting mediumand nutrient availability. This study aimed to determine the effects of planting medium and eco-enzymeconcentration on the growth and yield of tomato plants. A two-factor Randomized Block Design was used, withfactors including planting medium (soil; soil and rice husk charcoal 1:1; soil and cow manure 1:1; soil, rice huskcharcoal, and cow manure 1:1:1) and eco-enzyme concentration (0, 1, 2, and 3 ml/L). The results showed asignificant interaction between planting medium and eco-enzyme concentration on plant height from 28 to 63days after planting, number of fruits per plant, and fruit weight per plant. The best treatment was thecombination of soil and cow manure (1:1) with 3 ml/L eco-enzyme. The planting medium significantly affectedplant height at 14 to 21 days after planting, the number of leaves from 14 to 42 days after planting, and floweringage, while the eco-enzyme concentration significantly affected plant height at 14 to 21 days and the number ofleaves from 14 to 35 days after planting. The combination of organic growing media with eco-enzymes canenhance tomato growth and yield, particularly in terms of plant height, fruit number, and fruit weight per plant. These results suggest this treatment is optimal for increasing tomato growth and production by improving soilphysical, chemical, and biological characteristics.

Abstract

White jasmine (Jasminum sambac (L.) Aiton) is an ornamental plant of high economic value that requires access to quality, uniform seeds. Propagation through stem cuttings often faces challenges in root formation and initial growth. This study aims to analyze the effects of Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) concentration and soaking time on the initial growth of white jasmine cuttings. The study employed a factorial completely randomized design with two factors: IBA concentration (0, 50, 100, and 150 parts per million) and soaking time (30, 60, and 90 minutes). The parameters observed included shoot emergence time, shoot length, number of leaves, number of primary roots, and root fresh weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance at a 5% significance level. The results showed a significant interaction between concentration and soaking time for all parameters. The combination of 100 ppm IBA with a 60-minute soaking time resulted in the fastest shoot emergence (11.27 days), the longest shoot length at eight weeks after planting (11.27 cm), the highest number of leaves (12.60), the greatest number of primary roots (12.52), and the largest fresh root weight (1.06 g). Treatments without growth regulators showed the lowest values for most parameters. Thus, a concentration of 100 ppm with a 60-minute soaking time was the most effective combination for enhancing the initial growth of white jasmine cuttings. Applying this treatment has the potential to improve seedling quality and uniformity, supporting the development of white jasmine cultivation.

Abstract

Background: Purple eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is a high-value nutritional crop with significant market demand. However, production in Indonesia fluctuated between 2021 and 2023; after reaching a peak of 551,552 tons, yields dropped to 510,749 tons in 2023. This decline is largely attributed to the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers. This study aims to evaluate the interactions and effects of integrating goat manure with various liquid organic fertilizers (LOF) on purple eggplant growth. Furthermore, this research seeks to establish sustainable cultivation practices that reduce chemical dependency in horticulture. Methodology: This research followed a Factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the goat manure dosage at four levels: 0 g/plant (control), 500 g/plant, 750 g/plant, and 1,000 g/plant. The second factor consisted of four types of liquid applications: NPK 16:16:16 (control), eco-enzyme LOF, banana peel LOF, and cabbage waste LOF. Observation data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 5% significance level where significant effects were detected. Findings: The results showed that the combined treatment of goat manure dose of 1,000 g/plant and banana peel LOF gave the best results in the parameters of plant height (46.67 cm), number of leaves (16.33 leaves), total fruit number per plant (11.72 fruits), and total harvest weight per plant (1635.94 grams) compared to other organic combination treatments. Contribution: The combination of goat manure and banana peel liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) emerged as the most effective treatment compared to other organic combinations. This organic treatment resulted in a 28% yield increase over the control. Althought this specific increase was not statistically significant, the study strongly recommends organic fertilizers as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to reduce inorganic fertilizer dependency in horticultural farming systems
