Abstract

Indonesia, as an agrarian country, is highly dependent on the agricultural sector, including in East Nusa Tenggara Province, which is dominated by dryland areas and prone to crop failure. The impact is not only economic but also psychological, such as stress and depression. Nevertheless, some farmers remain able to survive, demonstrating resilience. This study aims to describe the resilience and adaptive strategies of farmers in dryland areas using a qualitative phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews. The results show that resilience is shaped by family responsibility, land ownership, positive mindset, spiritual beliefs, self-confidence, and dependence on farming. Resilient farmers can manage emotions, think optimistically, and develop adaptive strategies. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for policies to support the resilience of farmers in drought-prone areas.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of the stress experienced by thesis supervisors in the Psychology Study Program, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Nusa Cendana. The research background stems from the increasing academic workload, the dynamics of interactions with students, and institutional demands that may affect supervisors’ psychological well-being and the quality of academic guidance. The study focuses on identifying the sources of stress, the stress responses that emerge, and the factors that either strengthen or weaken the presence of stress. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews with three thesis supervisors selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model of qualitative data analysis. The findings indicate that the supervision process generates both positive and negative stress responses. The main sources of stress include students who show limited progress, poorly completed revisions, and uncooperative co-supervisors. Additional stress-enhancing factors include pressure from students’ families, the use of AI in thesis writing, and the impacts of the Merdeka Student Exchange Program. These findings highlight the importance of institutional support, effective workload management, and the use of adaptive coping strategies to maintain supervisors’ psychological well-being and ensure the quality of academic supervision.

Abstract

Marriage practices rooted in local cultural traditions often shape women’s psychological experiences and well-being. In the Nagekeo community, the ‘belis’ tradition not only represents social respect and cultural identity but also presents social, economic, and emotional challenges for women within marital life. This study aims to identify the factors that influence women's optimism with belis in Nagekeo, using a descriptive qualitative method with 7 participants. Data were collected through interviews and thematic analysis. The results found four main themes that shape women's optimism: (1) social support, including support from husbands, children, immediate family, and the social environment; (2) self-esteem that arises from social appreciation and acceptance after the belis process; (3) self-confidence through involvement in decision-making, adaptability, and self-control; (4) accumulated experience, including readiness for marriage and spiritual conviction. These findings show that women's optimism is shaped by mutually reinforcing factors that help them persevere and view marriage positively.

Abstract

Sexual violence against men remains underdiscussed and is often marginalized due to prevailing masculinity stigma. This study aims to explore the psychological experiences of male survivors of sexual violence in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara. The research employed a qualitative approach using the photovoice method for data collection, involving five male survivors of sexual violence. Thematic analysis identified four main themes. First, the forms of sexual violence experienced included conventional violence (physical, verbal, and non-verbal) as well as digital sexual violence. Second, survivors experienced revictimization through masculinity stigma and barriers to seeking help. Third, survivors’ psychological responses emerged spontaneously across cognitive, affective, and conative domains. Fourth, survivors developed psychological capital in the form of self-efficacy, optimism, and resilience. This study highlights that the psychological experiences of male survivors are complex and shaped by gender norms and social contexts, thus requiring inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches.

Abstract

Early adulthood is a crucial transitional phase faced with heavy developmental demands, where an individual's psychological well-being is often threatened by the long-term impact of past trauma in the form of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). The focus of this research problem is to describe in depth the level of religiosity in early adults in Kupang City who have a history of adverse childhood experiences. The research steps were carried out through a quantitative descriptive approach involving 383 respondents aged 18 to 25 years as the research sample. Data were collected using the ACE Scale which covers 13 types of traumatic experiences and The Centrality of Religiosity Scale which measures five main dimensions of spirituality, then the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The quantitative research findings revealed that the majority of participants, namely 73.1%, were in the high to very high ACE category, while their religiosity profile also showed a very significant percentage in the high to very high category at 91.9%. The main conclusion of this study confirms that high exposure to adverse childhood experiences does not automatically reduce an individual's spiritual commitment. In the socio-cultural characteristics of the religious city of Kupang, religion remains a prominent identity and a source of coping for young adults to make sense of life despite their difficult past history, which also becomes an important basis for designing spirituality-based psychological interventions in the future.
