Abstract

Land degradation in the Baliase River Basin continues to worsen due to increasingly complex hydrological phenomena. This study aimed to evaluate peak discharge as a flood reference for a return period of 2–200 years, estimate channel capacity, determine flood risk status, and simulate hydraulic responses to variations in Manning's n value. Peak discharge calculations use the Nakayasu synthetic unit hydrograph method, with field geometric data modeled using HEC-RAS 6.0 software in a steady-state manner. Four technical scenarios were tested: (1) river normalization, (2) clearing of wild vegetation, (3) bank hardening, and (4) channel deepening/straightening. The analysis results indicate that the Baliase River Basin is generally in critical flood conditions, especially in the downstream and central areas (Stations 6-14). Most river segments are unable to accommodate peak discharges for a repeat period of 2 years. The variation in the n value in each scenario suggests that technical intervention can significantly alter the hydraulic characteristics. Adjusting n values can reduce flood risk, primarily through changes in hydraulic form. Scenario 4 is most effective because it increases the cross-sectional area and hydraulic radius, while Scenarios 1 and 3 contribute by reducing channel roughness. Scenario 2 serves as a support strategy and is ideally combined with other strategies. Priority is given to Scenario 4 in areas where discharge exceeds channel capacity.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Land use change in the Tanralili sub-watershed (upstream of the Maros watershed) is the main cause of decreased vegetation density and landslides. This study aims to identify land capability classes, analyze the suitability of land use with land capability classes and formulate land use directions based on Maros watershed land capability classes. The data obtained from laboratory analysis determined the land capability class; the land cover map was overlaid with the land capability class map to determine the suitability of land use and the next direction. The results of the land capability classification in the Maros watershed obtained six land capability classes, with Class IV dominating the land study with a total area of 37,792.34 ha (62.11%). The Maros watershed has 24,714.18 ha (40.62%) of unsuitable land. The direction for land management carried out on unsuitable land units is to direct community forestry activities (HKm) with an agroforestry system on the use of dryland agricultural land within forest areas through a supported talun-garden and grass-forest (silvopasture) model approach with vegetative conservation efforts.

Abstract

Abstract. Nuryanti DM, Liana, Witno, Soma AS, Asrianny, Ayu SM, Awalia IM. 2023. Composition, diversity and association of pioneer plants on post-landslide areas in Palopo, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1862-1870. The existence of pioneer plants is very important because of their role in initiating vegetation succession as well as regulators of the physical properties of a disturbed environment. Landslide is one type of environmental disturbance that causes vegetation loss, either partially or entirely. In many cases, several pioneer plants start to appear following a landslide. This study aims to assess the vegetation composition, diversity and interspecific association of plant species in post-landslide areas in Palopo City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. We employed sampling plot methods with a size of 5 x 5 m2 in 12 landslide sites with varying landslide characteristics during the period of 2021 to 2022. Vegetation composition was analyzed using Important Value Index and an interspecies association was analyzed using Chi-square analysis. The results of the study found that the pioneer plants on post-landslides consisted of a total of 112 species which can be classified into eight habitus, namely bamboo, herbaceous, vines, ferns, palms, shrubs, trees and bushes. Herbaceous plants had the largest number of species, with 53 species. Species with the highest IVI for tree was Trema orientalis (L.) Blume (79.86%), shrub was Homalanthus populifolius Graham (61.49%), bush was unidentified species (53.41%), fern was Nephrolepis cordifolia (L.) C.Presl (6.99%), vines was Merremia peltata (L.) Merr. (57.92%), herbaceous was Miconia papillosa (Desr.) Naudin (22.65%), while palm was Pandanus tectorius Parkinson ex Du Roi and bamboo was Bambusa balcoa Roxb. each had IVI of 200% because only one species was found. The results of the diversity analysis showed that trees, shrubs, bushes, ferns, vines and herbs had a moderate level of species diversity, while palm and bamboo had a low diversity level. Similarly, trees, shrubs, bushes, ferns, and vines had high evenness levels, while bamboo and palm had low evenness index. There were three associations between dominant plants, namely B. balcoa with T. orientalis, B. balcoa with H. populifolius, and B. balcoa with Macroptilium atropurpureum (DC.) Urb. The findings of this study suggest that in just one year, pioneer plants rapidly colonized post-landslide areas which provided vegetation cover for the open landscape.

Abstract

Abstract. Nuraeni S, Soma AS, Sadapotto A, Mujetahid A, Baharuddin, Nur RJB, Huda N, Fattah A. 2024. The pathological pebrine diseases of Bombyx mori caused by Nosema bombycis (mNb) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2990-2995. South Sulawesi is the main producer of raw silk in Indonesia. However, over the past decade, raw silk production has plummeted due to an epizootic of pebrine disease. Pebrine disease is caused by the obligate parasite microsporidium Nosema bombycis Filatova, 1942 (mNb) (Microsporidia: Nosematidae). This study aims to identify mNb spore morphology and pathological characteristics, including disease symptoms, infectivity tests, and pebrine epizootic history. Spore morphology was observed using a light microscope. Infectivity test with a spore concentration of 1×108 mL-1 in 3rd, and 4th instars, inoculation using the smear method on mulberry leaves. Information on pebrine disease rates was obtained from documents of egg certification between 2002 and 2016. The research results show that the spores are oval in shape. The size of the spores can reach a length of 4.57±0.46 µm and a width of 2.24±0.493 µm. The main symptoms of this disease are the change in color of the cuticle to brownish with irregular black spots and non-uniform growth because many fail to molt, and the larval phase increases by 8-10 days. Inoculation in the 3rd instar can cause larval death starting on the second day after inoculation, with a cumulative mortality rate of 64%. Inoculation of the 4th instar, death begins on the eighth day, and a cumulative mortality rate of 52%. The pebrine epizootic in 2010 reached 72.42%, which reduced production by 57%. Understanding the pathological causes of pebrine disease and its history is useful to prevent rather than control the occurrence of the next epizootic.
