Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the English extracurricular program in relation to students' speaking ability at Diniyyah Pasia Boarding School. This research applies a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through interview the students grade 10th and a mentor, observations of extracurricular activities, as well as documentation. This study finds that the English extracurricular program runs regularly with a structured schedule, yet its effectiveness in improving students' speaking skills is hindered by limited variety in teaching methods, lack of supporting media like audiovisual tools, activities (such as public speaking and conversation) misaligned with students' interests and levels, and time constraints preventing equal speaking opportunities. While regular participation boosts confidence in some students, innovations in teaching approaches, integration of learning media, and tailored activity content are recommended for greater impact.

Abstract

This study explores student participation (SP) paradoxes during the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) process in an eleventh-grade EFL setting. Despite TPS's reputation for engagement, observations at SMA N 1 Talang Kelapa revealed inconsistent participation levels. Using a descriptive qualitative design, student involvement was tracked across seven indicators. Findings indicate that participation is phase-dependent: the Pairing phase saw robust, universal engagement, whereas the Thinking phase was marked by cognitive passivity. The Sharing phase highlighted significant socio-affective barriers, with students relying on teacher intervention or peer copying due to performance anxiety. These results suggest that while TPS excels in collaborative rehearsal, it falters during stages requiring individual accountability and higher-order thinking.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the correlation between students’ digital reading attitude and their reading comprehension at the third semester of the English Education Department at UIN Bukittinggi. The study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 54 students as the sample. Data were collected using a digital reading attitude questionnaire adapted from Putman’s reading attitude model and a reading comprehension score obtained from a validated reading test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rho correlation due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The findings indicated that students’ digital reading attitude obtained a mean score of 59.85, while their reading comprehension achieved a mean score of 83.2. The correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between digital reading attitude and reading comprehension (r = 0.294, p < 0.05). These results indicate that students’ digital reading attitude is associated with their reading comprehension. Therefore, integrating digital reading materials and strategies into English instruction is recommended to support students’ reading comprehension development.

Abstract

Emotional factors are often considered crucial in influencing students’ success in English speaking activities, particularly in public speaking contexts. Emotional intelligence plays an important role in supporting students’ confidence and effectiveness in public speaking activities. This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ emotional intelligence and their public speaking performance in English presentations. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 25 twelfth-grade students at SMAN 1 Mungka who were selected using total sampling. Data were collected through an emotional intelligence questionnaire and documentation of students’ public speaking performance scores. The questionnaire was validated using Aiken’s V through expert judgment and demonstrated acceptable reliability based on Cronbach’s Alpha. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis with the help of SPSS. The findings revealed that students generally showed a good level of emotional intelligence and moderate public speaking performance. The correlation analysis indicated a very strong and significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and public speaking performance (r = 0.956, p 0.01). These results suggest that emotional intelligence contributes to students’ success in delivering English presentations.
