Abstract

This study aims to develop asbestos-free and environmentally friendly brake pads using apus bamboo powder (Gigantochloa apus). In the experiments, bamboo powder, resin, and catalyst were used as the raw materials and varied to ensure the quality of the prepared brake pads. To analyze the performance of brake pads, the fabricated brake pads are subjected to physicochemical tests (such as microscopic tests and functional group analysis) and mechanical tests (such as puncture tests, compression tests, and friction tests). The research results showed that adjusting the composition of the raw materials allowed a change in the performance of the brake pad, including porosity, morphological structure, and mechanical properties. Indeed, the condition of the low porosity on the inside of the brake pad strategically optimizes the compression strength of the material, making this design ideal for applications that require high resistance to compression loads. This study shows the possibility of apus bamboo powder as an alternative to asbestos in the production of non-asbestos brake pads, offering a safer and environmentally friendly solution as well as giving ideas for supporting current issues in the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the percentage of Ketapang fruit (KF) bio briquette on calorific value and burning rate. This research is experimental in a physics laboratory with a literature review carried out in three stages, namely the preparation stage, the bio briquette manufacturing stage, and the bio briquette testing stage. The main ingredient used in the manufacture of bio briquettes is Ketapang fruit. The adhesive materials used were tapioca flour and sago flour with percentages of 10%, 12.5% and 15%. The results showed that the calorific value of the following bio briquettes using the tapioca predicate included 5,139.45 Cal, 5,540.97 Cal, 5,922.42 Cal, and those using the sago predicate including 2,409.12 Cal, 3,653.83 Cal, 3,894.74 cal. The highest calorific value was in bio briquettes with tapioca adhesive type in the sample at 85%:15%. The burning rate of bio briquettes using tapioca glue included 1.98 gr/minute, 1.76 gr/minute, 1.62 gr/minute and those using sago glue included 2.62 gr/minute, 2.50 gr/minute, 2.31 gr/minute. The lowest burning rate value was in bio briquettes with the type of sago glue in the sample at 85%:15%. Based on the test results, it is known that the lower the percentage of keta pang fruit in the bio briquettes, the lower the burning rate, and the resulting calorific value increases.

Abstract

As the forefront in fiber materials development, electrospun nanofiber membrane (NFM) is potentially reliable for wastewater treatment due to its excellent properties for instance; large surface area, high porosity, tuneable pore size, and has great flux as compared to other conventional membranes. However, fouling issue will lead to degradation of membrane performance. Fouling issue can be alleviated by applying membrane surface modification. In this study, thermal annealing is applied onto nylon 6,6 nanofiber membrane with three different temperatures (60°C, 80°C and 120°C). Results show that annealing causes membrane shrinkage and reduction of membrane fiber diameter where the fiber reduced from 138.5 nm to 108.5 nm when annealed at 120°C. The optimum annealing temperature for the membrane was found to be at 60˚C as the membrane shows the highest flux at 1200 L/m2.h at 75 minutes filtration time and took longer time to get fouled (>75 minutes) compared with un-annealed membrane (55 minutes). Nylon 6,6 nanofiber membrane is also proven to give more than 90% of COD and turbidity rejection.

Abstract

During crude oil and natural gas extraction from a reservoir, a large amount of water is also produced. The water fraction contains oil, grease, organic and inorganic constituents, called produced water (PW). Over the years, efficient treatment of PW has been concerned. PW has been treated with various technologies, namely floatation, filtration, coagulation/flocculation, or biological processes. Those technologies were assembled to achieve discharge standards while minimizing the cost. Exploration of membrane-based technologies for the treatment of PW has recently been reported, including the emerging forward osmosis (FO) process. This paper reviews the research progress on the FO process for PW treatment. A brief introduction to the traditional treatment technologies is first provided. Next, the basics of the FO process and research progress on the application of FO on PW treatment are discussed. Finally, techniques for fouling control in FO are reviewed, namely osmotic backwashing, ultrasound, chemical cleaning, and air sparging.

Abstract

Biofuels like biodiesel and bioethanol are the latest technologies to meet the rising energy demand and to replace depleting petroleum supplies. Biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils, can be used to replace diesel fuel. Vegetable oils are a sustainable energy resource with a similar energy content to diesel fuel. In the proposed process, the main product from the reaction is biodiesel, whereas the by-products consist of glycerol and fertilizer. Biodiesel is mainly used in automotive diesel engines for various reasons, such as having a greater oxygen content, a higher cetane number, a higher viscosity, a lower aromatic content, and very little sulfur. These properties are essential in engine performance, combustion, and emissions. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent literature on biodiesel production methods from waste cooking oil, where the methods are grouped systematically and assessed. A decision table on process selection is provided to screen the most suitable technology for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil. The properties and application of potential products and by-products are also discussed. Finally, the case study of supplying biodiesel for B5 fuel in Brunei Darussalam is also provided.
