Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain language education development research for improving student comprehension in learning science. This study also reviews the definition of these strategies, identifies factors that contribute to improving students' comprehension, and conducts a computational bibliometric review analysis to determine the efficacy of these approaches using Google Scholar with keywords "Language" and "Learning Science" from 2019 to 2023. There are also explanations for formal and informal learning, as well as educational levels for researching techniques and developing curriculum. The use of technology in media and laboratories is also a significant factor in increasing students' literacy and language impact. Language and student characteristics, motivation, teacher-student relationships, therapy, and psychological conditions are all inextricably linked. We also included information about language barriers for students with special needs, as well as new technologies that improve language learning, in which these can be factors in increasing student’s understanding of learning science. The bibliometric analysis results show that the trend of language research in learning science is decreasing year after year. This is due to the possibility that the focus of educational research has shifted to other areas, such as educational technology, science learning, or educational policy. The co-occurrence analysis results show several keywords that are frequently researched and should be paid attention to, including "language model," "natural language processing," "deep learning," "student," and "language learning." These keywords denote important parameters that can improve the learning experience because they enable personalized, interactive, adaptive educational interventions, particularly in language learning contexts, by adapting content and feedback to each student's needs and preferences. This paper will be useful to educators in better understanding the current state of affairs concerning the importance of language in engineering teaching and learning.

Abstract

The 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results depict a significant decline in the academic performance of Indonesian 15-year-olds in mathematics, reading, and science. The results position Indonesia's scores among the lowest since the country first participation in 2001. This editorial examines the implications of these results, drawing on data presented in PISA 2022, which illustrate the downward trend in performance and the widening gap between different socioeconomic groups. It argues for urgent educational reforms aimed at overhauling the current curricular frameworks, enhancing teacher training, and ensuring equitable educational opportunities. Specific strategies to achieve these goals include implementing the Merdeka Curriculum to promote student-centered learning, integrating educational neuroscience-based interventions to address learning disabilities, and leveraging intelligent tutoring systems and social media for collaborative learning. Additionally, developing localized assessments like the Indonesian Madrasah Competency Assessment and the Assessment of Indonesian Student Competence ensures alignment with international standards while addressing local needs. Through a comparative analysis with OECD averages and higher-performing nations, this piece highlights the necessity for Indonesia to adopt international best practices while tailoring them to local contexts. The ultimate goal is to equip Indonesian students with the skills necessary to meet both current and future challenges, thus improving their outcomes in subsequent PISA assessments and fostering national development. This article calls on policymakers, educational leaders, and stakeholders to engage in a concerted effort to address these educational deficiencies with the seriousness they deserve.

Abstract

Biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles using banana peels is considered more economical and has been proven to produce gold nanoparticles that have various applications in the medical field. Therefore, the production of gold nanoparticles needs to be developed on an industrial scale. This paper aims to determine the feasibility of a gold nanoparticle biosynthesis project using banana peels on an industrial scale. The economic evaluation method uses an analysis of several economic evaluation parameters such as GPM (Gross Profit Margin), BEP (Break-Even Point), CNPV (Cumulative Net Present Value), PBP (Payback Period), and PI (Profitability Index). The results show that on an industrial scale, it is assumed that the amount of AuNP production in one year is 120 L. The total price required for production in one year is 3,125,204.84 USD with annual sales of 3,240,000 USD so that the total price is 114,795.16 USD per year. Under ideal conditions, the PBP analysis shows that the project will have a profit in the 3rd year, and the PI analysis shows that the initial capital costs can be covered since the 4th year. The results of the analysis in some non-ideal conditions indicate that project losses will occur. Based on the economic evaluation, it can be concluded that the production of industrial-scale gold nanoparticles by biosynthetic methods using banana peels can be carried out with anticipation of losses that will occur due to changes in some ideal conditions.

Abstract

Phenol formaldehyde is one of the adhesives often used in wood processing, such as panels, particle boards, fiberboards, plywood, and others. However, the implementation of phenol formaldehyde adhesive has been greatly limited because of its non-renewability and toxicity. Modifying phenol formaldehyde adhesives is needed to reduce formaldehyde emission by adding tannin to the adhesive mixture. This study aims to extract tannin compounds from Java plum leaves with ethanol as a solvent for adhesive mixture. The adhesive implementation on plywood was also prepared, with various tannin content in the range of 10%-50%. The obtained data from tannin extraction from Java plum leaves are tannin yield, functional groups, total phenolic content, viscosity, and compressive test on plywood. The highest tannin yield and content are 46.70% and 27.88 mg/L, respectively, obtained at the weight ratio 1:5. At the same time, products of tannin-phenol formaldehyde have a viscosity as SNI 1987 standards for wood adhesives, namely in the range of 0.68-0.71 poise, while the result of the compressive strength is in the range of 0.02-0.05 N/mm2 and has met the requirement of SNI 1998 standards. Therefore, the tannin from Java plum leaves is a promising substitution of phenol in phenol formaldehyde in some aspects of the wood processing industry.
